Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning has a strategic role in shaping students’ character, noble morals, and spiritual awareness. However, the implementation of PAI learning still faces various obstacles, particularly the dominance of conventional teacher-centered methods and the lack of contextual learning experiences, so the internalization of Islamic values has not occurred optimally in students’ lives. This article aims to examine the concept, implementation, advantages, and challenges of project-based PAI learning as an alternative learning innovation relevant to the demands of 21st-century education. This study used a library research method by examining various scholarly sources related to Project-Based Learning and Islamic Religious Education. The findings show that project-based PAI learning can increase students’ engagement in the learning process, develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills, and strengthen the practice of Islamic values in daily life. Nevertheless, its implementation still faces challenges related to teacher readiness, limited time, and support for facilities and infrastructure. The conclusion of this study confirms that project-based PAI learning can serve as an innovative learning strategy that supports the achievement of Islamic education goals in a more contextual, participatory, and meaningful manner. The implications of this study indicate the importance of systematic lesson planning, improving teacher competence, and institutional support so that project-based PAI learning can be implemented effectively in shaping students’ character and 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study examines the thought of Zakiyah Daradjat in the context of Islamic education in Indonesia using a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study approach. It focuses on her main ideas regarding the nature and aims of Islamic education, which she formulates as efforts to nurture human beings to become pious servants of Allah in all aspects of life—actions, thoughts, and feelings. She emphasizes that the foundations of Islamic education rest on the Al-Qur’an, As-Sunnah, and Ijtihad, and she positions the family, school, and society as the environments as well as the parties responsible for the educational process. The findings show that Zakiyah Daradjat’s contribution to Islamic education in Indonesia is manifested in two principal roles. First, as an educator and psychologist who devoted considerable attention to mental health, particularly in relation to adolescent issues. Second, as a bureaucrat and reformer of Islamic education who was directly involved in educational practice and policy formulation through strategic positions in government agencies and Islamic educational institutions. These contributions make Zakiyah Daradjat’s thought remain relevant and significant for the development of Islamic education in Indonesia to the present day.

Abstract

This study examines the concepts, methods, and contemporary relevance of teaching classical kitab texts in Indonesian pesantren. Guided by three research questions—concerning the definition of kitab instruction, the methods used in the teaching process, and the challenges encountered in the modern era. The study aims to describe the practice of kitab teaching and analyse its position and continuity in the present context. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research finds that kitab instruction is a systematic process of guiding santri to understand authoritative texts through traditional methods such as bandongan, sorogan, and halaqah. These methods strengthen text comprehension, develop interpretive competence, and cultivate disciplined learning grounded in respect for teachers and scholarly traditions. The study also identifies several contemporary challenges, including digital distractions, shifting learning preferences, and the need for more adaptive pedagogical strategies. Nevertheless, kitab teaching remains relevant due to its integrative role in shaping the intellectual, spiritual, and moral character of santri, thereby reaffirming pesantren as a key pillar of Islamic education.

Abstract

Islamic education is not solely oriented towards the acquisition of knowledge but also towards the formation of students’ values and behaviour, making the axiological dimension an essential aspect, particularly in Akidah Akhlak learning. This study aimed to analyse the concept of axiology in Islamic education and its implementation in Akidah Akhlak instruction. A qualitative method was employed with a field-study approach through direct observation in a madrasah to examine problems in Akidah Akhlak learning within real classroom contexts. The findings show that the axiology of Islamic education in Akidah Akhlak lessons emphasises the inculcation of faith-based, moral, ethical, and noble character values as the foundation for students’ character formation. These values are not only presented at a theoretical level but are also directed towards practice in daily life through a continuous internalisation process. The findings affirm that Akidah Akhlak learning functions as an effective means of internalising Islamic values to shape individuals who are faithful, possess noble character, and act responsibly in social life, while simultaneously strengthening the position of axiology as a normative and practical foundation in the development of character-based Islamic education.
