Abstract

In Japanese communication, aizuchi plays an important role in maintaining interaction and expressing attentiveness toward the speaker. Although aizuchi has been widely studied as a listener response, its role as a politeness strategy in fictional conversations remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze the forms, types, and functions of aizuchi that reflect politeness strategies in the anime "Apothecary Diaries" Season 1 episodes 1-6. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The research data are dialogues containing aizuchi classified based on the types and functions of aizuchi according to Horiguchi (1997) and politeness strategies according to the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). The results show that there are 33 aizuchi utterances that reflect politeness strategies. The most frequently used politeness strategy is Positive Politeness (18 data), followed by Negative Politeness (11 data), Bald on Record (2 data), and Off-Record (2 data). In terms of function, aizuchi is most often used as a sign of understanding (16 data) and confirming information conveyed by the interlocutor (9 data). Thus, the use of aizuchi in the anime “Apothecary Diaries” is able to reflect politeness that considers social hierarchy, emotional closeness, and the context of the conversation.

Abstract

In pragmatic studies, speech is one of the studies that discusses the use of speech in a conversation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning of directive speech acts, the forms of directive speech acts used, and social contextual factors that influence the selection of directive speech act forms used in the anime Skip and Loafer. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The data collection method used is the observation method followed by note-taking. In analyzing the data, the study employs Namatame`s (1996) theory of the meaning of directive speech acts, Yule`s (1996) theory of speech act expressions, and Hymes`(1974) theory of speech acts. The results of the study indicate that 44 instances of directive speech acts were identified in the anime Skip and Loafer. From this data, six meaning of directive speech acts were identified: command, request, prohibition, permission, suggestion, and invitation. Based on the form of speech act expressions used, 37 instances of direct speech acts and 7 instances of indirect speech acts were found. Meanwhile, the social contextual factors that influence the selection of directive speech act expressions used in the anime Skip and Loafer include setting and scene, which indicate the formal nature of the situation and the location of the conversation; participants, which indicate the speaker`s role, differences in status, and relationship between the speaker and the addressee; and ends, which indicate the speaker`s intention or purpose in uttering the speech act.

Abstract

Code-mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon in popular music, particularly in Japanese-language songs performed by Korean pop (K-Pop) artists, whose blending of Japanese and English lyrics reflects globalized and multicultural communication strategies. This study aims to identify and describe the types and functions of code-mixing found in the lyrics of TWICE's Japanese song Fanfare, focusing on the linguistic form as well as the pragmatic function of the code-mixed elements within the lyrics. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Muysken's (2000) theory of code-mixing types and Appel & Muysken's (2005) theory of code-mixing functions; the data, obtained from the song's official lyrics published on Spotify and Genius, were collected through a note-taking observation method and analyzed through identification, classification, and functional analysis, with Japanese established as the matrix language. The findings revealed 17 instances of code-mixing, consisting of seven insertion-type and ten alternation-type occurrences, while no instances of congruent lexicalization were identified due to the structural differences between Japanese and English. Furthermore, 27 occurrences of code-mixing functions were found, comprising expressive (11), directive (7), phatic (4), poetic (4), and referential (1) functions. The expressive function was the most dominant, indicating that code-mixing in Fanfare primarily serves to express feelings and emotions in conveying the song's motivational message. These findings confirm that code-mixing in song lyrics is not a coincidental form of language variation but a deliberate, functional linguistic strategy that strengthens meaning and communicative appeal.

Abstract

Song lyrics as a form of art not only function as a medium of entertainment, but also as a means of emotional expression and effective cultural representation. This study aimed to identify the forms and analyze the meanings of metaphorical figurative language in the song lyrics of the album The Second Step: Chapter Two by TREASURE. A qualitative descriptive approach in linguistics was applied in this research. Data were collected using observing, recording, and note-taking techniques. For the analysis of metaphor types and meanings, Knowles and Moon's (2006) theoretical framework was utilized, in which three main components (vehicle, topic, and ground) were focused upon. Based on the results, 15 metaphorical data from the seven analyzed songs were found, which were classified into metonymy (5 data), personification (4 data), simile (3 data), and synesthesia (3 data). Metonymy was shown to be the most dominantly used metaphor, indicating that conceptual contiguity associations were utilized to convey implicit messages. Furthermore, code-mixing elements were also found within the metaphor constructions, which were used to serve crucial semantic functions for emphasis and semantic precision due to the lack of lexical equivalents.
