Abstract

Fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) air pollution has long been identified as a crucial contributor to cardiovascular diseases in big cities with high air emissions like Jakarta. Long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ can trigger systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and accelerated atherosclerosis, thereby potentially increasing the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). This research aims to identify the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) from long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ among those aged 40–60 years and verify the hypothesis that higher concentrations of PM₂.₅ are related to higher incidences of MACE and values of CVD biomarkers. This longitudinal study involved 2,000 respondents aged 40–60 with more than three years of residence in Jakarta, selected via multistage sampling. PM₂.₅ exposure was estimated annually according to residence location. Analysis used Cox proportional hazards models to assess MACE risk and linear mixed-effects models for biomarker changes. Results showed exposure variation between tertiles (12–42 µg/m³) with a strong dose–response pattern; the highest exposure group had four times higher incidence of MACE than the lowest tertile. Exposure was also linked to increased blood pressure, LDL, hs-CRP, HbA1c, and accelerated CIMT thickening. These findings have significant implications for air quality management policies to minimize cardiovascular risk in sensitive age groups. Overall, this study highlights the urgent need to reduce PM₂.₅ concentrations as a preventive measure against CVD in densely populated metropolitan areas.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that requires effective management to maintain the patient's quality of life. Preventing DM complications necessitates adequate knowledge and a positive attitude, thereby helping patients avoid the complications associated with the disease. Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between patients' knowledge and attitudes and efforts to prevent diabetes mellitus (DM) complications at the Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic of Raden Mattaher Regional General Hospital (RGH), Jambi. Method: This study employed an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of patients with diabetes mellitus, with a sample size of 84 respondents. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire, and statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test at a 95% confidence level (0.05). Result: The study found a significant relationship between knowledge and the prevention of diabetes mellitus complications (p-value = 0.000). Attitude also showed a significant relationship with the prevention of diabetes mellitus complications (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: Adequate knowledge and positive attitudes will enable patients to effectively engage in efforts to prevent diabetes complications; given that diabetes is a chronic disease capable of causing complications affecting all bodily organs, prevention is essential. Future researchers are encouraged to further explore knowledge and attitudes regarding the prevention of diabetes complications, and healthcare providers should assist in improving patient knowledge and attitudes to prevent complications associated with the disease.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Hipertensi pada kelompok usia remaja kini menjadi perhatian kesehatan yang semakin signifikan akibat meningkatnya kebiasaan hidup sedentari, tingginya konsumsi makanan bergaram, serta rendahnya pemahaman remaja mengenai faktor-faktor risikonya. Lingkungan sekolah dipandang sebagai sarana yang strategis untuk pelaksanaan program pemberdayaan melalui kegiatan organisasi sekolah. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memperluas wawasan siswa mengenai hipertensi serta meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam mengenali dan mendeteksi masalah terkait hipertensi. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan melalui metode pendidikan kesehatan dengan memanfaatkan media video edukasi berbentuk animasi untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa, sekaligus memberikan pelatihan keterampilan dalam melakukan deteksi dini hipertensi menggunakan tensimeter digital. Pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dievaluasi melalui pemberian pre-test dan post-test. Hasil analisis statistik menggunakan uji Wilcoxon sign rank testmenunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan yang bermakna setelah intervensi, dengan p-value sebesar 0,002. Temuan tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa edukasi berbasis video yang dipadukan dengan pelatihan pemeriksaan mampu memperkuat pemahaman remaja mengenai hipertensi serta urgensi deteksi dini. Oleh karena itu, program pemberdayaan sekolah melalui organisasi sekolah direkomendasikan untuk diimplementasikan secara berkesinambungan sebagai langkah preventif dalam pengendalian hipertensi sejak usia remaja. Kata Kunci: Video Edukasi Animasi, Hipertensi Remaja, Pemberdayaan Siswa.  ABSTRACT Hypertension in adolescents is becoming an increasingly significant health concern due to increasing sedentary lifestyles, high consumption of salty foods, and low understanding of risk factors. The school environment is seen as a strategic platform for implementing empowerment programs through school organization activities. These activities aim to broaden students' knowledge about hypertension and improve their ability to recognize and detect hypertension-related problems. These activities are implemented through health education methods, utilizing animated educational videos to enhance student understanding, while also providing skills training in early hypertension detection using digital blood pressure monitors. The implementation of community service was evaluated through pre- and post-tests. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant increase in knowledge after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.002. These findings indicate that video-based education combined with screening training can strengthen adolescents' understanding of hypertension and the urgency of early detection. Therefore, the ongoing implementation of school empowerment programs through school organizations is recommended as a preventive measure in controlling hypertension starting in adolescence. Keywords: Animated Educational Videos, Adolescent Hypertension, Student Empowerment.
