Abstract

ABSTRACT Hypertension in adolescents is becoming an increasingly significant health concern due to increasing sedentary lifestyles, high consumption of salty foods, and low understanding of risk factors. The school environment is seen as a strategic platform for implementing empowerment programs through school organization activities. These activities aim to broaden students' knowledge about hypertension and improve their ability to recognize and detect hypertension-related problems. These activities are implemented through health education methods, utilizing animated educational videos to enhance student understanding, while also providing skills training in early hypertension detection using digital blood pressure monitors. The implementation of community service was evaluated through pre- and post-tests. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant increase in knowledge after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.002. These findings indicate that video-based education combined with screening training can strengthen adolescents' understanding of hypertension and the urgency of early detection. Therefore, the ongoing implementation of school empowerment programs through school organizations is recommended as a preventive measure in controlling hypertension starting in adolescence. Keywords: Animated Educational Videos, Adolescent Hypertension, Student Empowerment.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that can affect a patient's quality of life if not properly managed. Patients require long-term care, making the prevention of complications essential, given the high potential for diabetes mellitus to cause complications in any organ of the body. Objective: This study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients with diabetes mellitus in the context of efforts to prevent diabetes complications at an internal medicine outpatient clinic. Methods: This study employed a descriptive survey using a cross-sectional design. A sample of 84 respondents was selected using a non-random, purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire designed to assess the characteristics of patients with diabetes mellitus. Univariate analysis was performed following the data collection procedure. Respondents received a study explanation, and ethical research principles were upheld throughout the process. Results: Univariate analysis revealed the following profile of the diabetes mellitus patients: the majority were male (n=48; 57.1%) and aged between 45 and 64 years (n=47; 56.0%); the most common education level was junior high school (n=26; 31.0%); 19 respondents (22.6%) were civil servants; 31 respondents (36.9%) weighed between 61 and 80 kg; the majority (n=55; 65.5%) had a family history of diabetes mellitus; and the most common duration of the disease was 6–10 years (n=30; 35.7%). Conclusion: This study was limited to describing the characteristics of patients with diabetes mellitus regarding efforts to prevent complications; future research should investigate the relationship between these characteristics and the prevention of diabetes complications

Abstract

Various forms of malnutrition occur among school-aged children, including undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. Assessing nutritional status is essential to identify appropriate strategies for preventing more severe nutritional problems. However, many children do not know how to detect their nutritional status early, one of which can be done through anthropometric measurements. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Nergizi Module on improving students’ skills in measuring nutritional status. Method: This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling, involving 60 elementary school students in Palembang City, South Sumatra. The intervention was conducted three times through educational sessions using the Nergizi Module developed by the research team. Data were collected by assessing students’ skills in determining nutritional status before and after the intervention using an observation checklist. Univariate analysis was used to describe respondent characteristics, and bivariate analysis was performed using McNemar test. The results showed an improvement in students’ skills after the intervention, where initially only 12 students were categorized as having good skills, increasing to 46 students after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.001 using McNemar test. Health education using educational modules can improve students’ skills in assessing nutritional status through anthropometric measurements. The findings of this study are expected to enhance students’ ability to identify their nutritional status, thereby helping to prevent nutritional problems.

Abstract

Hypertension is a common health issue among palliative patients and can worsen quality of life if not well-controlled. One of the complementary nursing interventions used to reduce Systolic blood pressure is wet cupping. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of wet cupping intervention on Systolic blood pressure in hypertensive palliative patients using a repeated measurement approach. This study used a quasi-experimental design with repeated measurements on 19 hypertensive patients. Systolic Blood pressure measurements were taken at four time points: Pre Test, Post Test 1, Post Test 2, and Post Test 3 after the wet cupping intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman test. The results showed a significant decrease in Systolic blood pressure at each post-test. The average Systolic blood pressure measurement decreased from Pre Test (138) to Post Test 1 (128), Post Test 2 (126), and Post Test 3 (120). The Friedman statistical test showed a p-value of 0.000, indicating a significant difference in Systolic blood pressure after the wet cupping intervention. The results of this study suggest that wet cupping is effective in lowering Systolic blood pressure in hypertensive palliative patients. A significant reduction occurred at all post-test stages, supporting the use of wet cupping as a non-pharmacological intervention for hypertension in palliative patients. The findings indicate that the complementary nursing intervention of wet cupping is effective in influencing Systolic blood pressure in palliative patients with hypertension. The gradual decrease in Systolic blood pressure observed through repeated measurements suggests that wet cupping may provide therapeutic effects through relaxation mechanisms, enhanced blood circulation, and reduced sympathetic nervous system activity.
