Abstract

This study investigates the naming system of Baduy honey varieties as a linguistic mechanism for encoding and transmitting ecological knowledge. Drawing on primary data comprising 23 honey names collected through online documentation and secondary literature, the study applies three theoretical frameworks: onomastics, ecolinguistics (Stibbe, 2015), and frame semantics (Fillmore, 1982). The analysis identifies five principal naming patterns: bee-based naming, flora-based naming, place-based naming, sensory-based naming, and quality-based naming. The findings reveal that each honey name encodes a salient ecological attribute selected from a broader set of environmental knowledge, activating an ecological frame that encompasses knowledge about bee species, nectar sources, landscape, and harvesting practices. Building on these findings, this study introduces the concept of Ecological Frame Encoding (EFE), defined as the linguistic process through which a community selects the most ecologically salient attribute of an environmental entity, evokes the corresponding ecological frame, and encodes it into a stable name that facilitates the preservation and intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge. This study contributes to the fields of ecological onomastics and ecolinguistics by demonstrating that Baduy honey names are not merely commercial labels but function as ecological frames that archive local environmental memory.

Abstract

Teaching Indonesian to Foreign Speakers (BIPA) at the advanced level requires teaching strategies that focus not only on language proficiency but also on developing cultural competence and the courage to express oneself. This article examines the application of a cross-cultural comparative literature approach through the medium of folktales and poetry as a pedagogical strategy in teaching advanced BIPA. This study uses a reflective qualitative approach based on teaching experiences at Multimedia Nusantara University. This study involved a total of 10 subjects. The majority of the subjects came from South Korea, while the remaining came from Japan and Thailand. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation, audiovisual documentation in the form of storytelling and poetry reading activities, and learner portfolios. The results show that this strategy can significantly improve cultural awareness, learning motivation, courage to express oneself, and expressive language competence among BIPA learners. By using the cultural background and literary experiences of BIPA learners as a starting point, literature acts as an affective and cultural bridge that facilitates dialogic and meaningful learning. These findings offer a new pedagogical perspective in BIPA teaching that is oriented towards strengthening identity and cross-cultural literacy.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the limited effectiveness of poetry appreciation teaching materials, which remain largely theoretical and fail to actively engage students in interpreting and expressing the aesthetic meaning of poetry. The purpose of this research is to develop poetry appreciation teaching materials based on the Interpretation, Demonstration, and Evaluation (IDE) technique that are applicable, interactive, and contextual for students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The research employed a Research and Development (RnD) method using the ADDIE model, which includes needs analysis through questionnaires and interviews, design, and draft preparation of the teaching materials. The results show that 90% of respondents support the implementation of the IDE technique, as it enhances students’ understanding, aesthetic sensitivity, and expressive skills in poetry appreciation.
