Abstract

The physical consistency of diet can affect the force exerted during muscle contraction when chewing food from the load sent to the mandible and cause adaptation of bone structure. The mechanical properties of bone are determined by the architecture of the trabeculae covering the walls and spaces. The difference in bone microstructure are influenced by the properties of the atoms that substitute for the composite. This study aimed to analyze the effect of dietary consistency on bone architecture and atomic mineral composition of the mandibular corpus. This study used eighteen male wistar rats aged 3 weeks were randomly divided into three groups, the hard diet (HD), the soft diet (SD) and the liquid diet (LD). After eight weeks the mice were sacrificed. The right mandibular corpus was examined to study the effect of masticatory functional load on the architecture and atomic mineral composition of bone. Qualitative analysis of SEM images showed that the HD group had the best bone architecture compared to the other groups. The atomic composition of Ca, Fe and Ca/P ratio in the HD group were also higher based on SEM-EDX examination. The results of this study on the mandibular corpus showed that masticatory muscle activity through the consistency of the diet consumed could affect the bone quality and quantity of atomic mineral composition. Further research is needed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of how atomic minerals can play a role in influencing bone quality.

Abstract

Considering the alveolar bone thickness (ABT) in orthodontic treatment needs special attention. The movement of teeth depends on the mechanism of bone remodeling and tissue response to orthodontic forces to evaluate ABT of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in various types of malocclusion. Methods: Only prospective original articles reporting ABT in subjects who have not undergone orthodontic treatment were selected. A total of 10 studies met the eligible criteria. Most all studies measured the thickness using CBCT. ABT on the labial side of the lower anterior teeth in the class I malocclusion group was thicker than in class II. The lingual side of the apical region of the mandibular incisors was lower in the class III group than in class I or II. ABT of the maxillary teeth on the labial surface showed no significant difference among the groups, whereas the palatal side of normal occlusion had a wider bone thickness. The inclination of the upper and lower anterior teeth was influenced by differences in the skeletal malocclusion pattern, which affected the thickness of the bone. Fenestration was more common in class II malocclusion. The results showed that ABT around anterior teeth varied according to the different classifications of malocclusion. The inclination of the upper and lower anterior teeth seemed to be influenced by the sagittal discrepancies. The pattern of facial growth also affected the thickness of the bone. Accurate evaluation is very important to prevent iatrogenic risks during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles have been the focus of research in various areas of dentistry, including orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment requires a long period of time, so the brackets are in the oral cavity for a long time. This can potentially trigger the formation of white spot lesions because plaque sticks more easily to the surrounding enamel. Using silver nanoparticles mixed with orthodontic adhesives has been reported to increase antibacterial and antimicrobial characteristics. This literature review aims to investigate the effect of adding silver nanoparticles to orthodontic adhesive devices in inhibiting antimicrobial activity. This study method was carried out by searching the online electronic databases PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with the keywords "silver nanoparticles AND antimicrobial", "silver nanoparticles AND orthodontic adhesive", "silver nanoparticles AND composite resin", which is an original article published the year 2019- 2023. The results of research from 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria showed that orthodontic adhesives with silver nanoparticles effectively inhibited microbial activity, such as Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans), Lactobacillus acidophilus (L.acidophilus), Streptococcus sanguinis (S.sanguinis) and Candida albicans through increased release of Ag+ ions. Silver has been known to have effects, including producing minimal bacterial resistance compared to antibiotics. Even though it results in a decrease in the shear bond strength (SBS), the decrease level is still within clinically tolerable limits. It can be concluded that research needs to continue to be developed to obtain the right concentration and composition of the addition of silver nanoparticles so that an orthodontic adhesive material is obtained that is not only superior in its antibacterial properties but also in its mechanical properties.

Abstract

Introduction: Facial profile analysis is crucial for evaluating aesthetics in orthodontic treatment planning.Cephalometry analysis (Steiner) assesses soft tissue structure through the S-line, while photometry lateralanalysis (Proffit) focuses on soft tissue angles with a more comprehensive approach. This study evaluates thecorrelation between these two methods in patients at the FKG UB Clinic. Objective: To determine thecorrelation between facial profiles assessed by Steiner’s cephalometric analysis and Proffit’s photometricanalysis at FKG UB Clinic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 patients meeting theinclusion criteria (aged ≥17 years, regardless of prior orthodontic treatment, with high-quality lateralcephalometric and photometric data). Data were analyzed using the Spearman test. Results: The correlationcoefficient of 0.247 with a p-value of 0.188 (p > 0.05) indicated no significant relationship between the twomethods. Most results from both methods showed convex facial profiles, with some differences caused byphoto-taking techniques. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between Steiner and Proffit analyses. However, both methods complement each other, and their combined use can improve the accuracy ofdiagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning. Keywords: Steiner analysis, Proffit analysis, cephalometry, photometry lateral, facial profile.

Abstract

Background: Double impaction of two teeth in the same region specifically tooth 22 and tooth 23 is a rare condition that requires a combined treatment approach involving fixed orthodontics and surgical exposure. Fixed orthodontic treatment is essential to prepare space, guide tooth movement after surgical exposure, prevent root resorption, and correct overall malocclusion. Surgical exposure is performed to expose the tooth crown, preserve the alveolar bone, avoid root exposure, and facilitate the attachment of buttons and ligatures. Impacted teeth can affect the stomatognathic system, facial growth, and aesthetics. The maxillary incisors and canines play a critical role in occlusion, masticatory function, and facial aesthetics, thus requiring appropriate management. Objective: To describe the management of a double impaction case in the anterior left maxillary region of a 19-year-old female patient using a combined approach of fixed orthodontic and surgical treatment. Methods: The patient underwent fixed orthodontic treatment and sequential extraction of premolars 14 and 24 to create space for the eruption of the impacted teeth and to correct the midline before surgical exposure. Post-surgical exposure, orthodontic treatment was continued to guide both teeth into proper alignment within the dental arch. Results: Teeth 22 and 23 successfully erupted with good occlusion. The patient's masticatory function and facial aesthetics improved over a 2-year period following surgical exposure. Conclusion: Fixed orthodontic treatment combined with surgical exposure is an effective strategy for managing double impaction of anterior teeth in the left maxillary region, considering the position of the crowns, tooth inclination, and root apex morphology of the impacted teeth. Highlights: Double impaction of teeth 22 and 23 is rare and affects function and aesthetics. Combined surgical and orthodontic treatment effectively guided tooth eruption. Treatment restored occlusion, midline, and facial aesthetics over 2 years. Keywords: Anterior tooth double impaction, surgical exposure, fixed orthodontic treatment
