Abstract

Oral and dental health is often neglected by the public, even though it plays a role as an entry point for germs and bacteria. Awareness of children aged 10–12 years in maintaining oral and dental health is still low, as seen from the habit of being lazy about brushing their teeth and frequently consuming sweet foods. This study aims to determine the description of knowledge about maintaining oral health and permanent tooth decay in fourth-grade students of SDN 18 Sesetan in 2026. The type of research is descriptive analytical with a cross-sectional approach. Primary data are in the form of knowledge test results and student dental examinations, and secondary data are in the form of student attendance. The results of the study on 37 students showed that the highest level of knowledge was in the sufficient category, with 22 students (59.46%). The number of students who experienced caries was 24 students (64.87%). It was concluded that most students have a level of knowledge about maintaining oral and dental health in the sufficient category with an average of sufficient knowledge and dental caries still very high.

Abstract

Oral health is an essential component of overall health. The high prevalence of oral health problems among elementary school children highlights the need for effective health promotion strategies. One educational method suitable for children is storytelling, which delivers health messages through engaging and easy-to-understand stories. This study aimed to determine the effect of oral health education using the storytelling method on the knowledge of oral health maintenance among fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Nomor 3 Sukawati in 2026. This quantitative study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design. The population consisted of all 36 fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Nomor 3 Sukawati, and total sampling was applied. Data were collected using knowledge questionnaires administered before and after the educational intervention. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, paired t-test, and Cohen's d effect size analysis. The results showed that before the intervention, most students had a good level of knowledge (47.2%) with a mean score of 61.67 ± 11.24. After the storytelling-based oral health education, all participants (100%) achieved an excellent level of knowledge, with the mean score increasing to 95.97 ± 4.18. The paired t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = 18.72; p < 0.001).

Abstract

Proper toothbrushing habits among school-aged children remain inadequate, highlighting the need for engaging and effective educational media. TikTok videos have the potential to serve as an audiovisual medium for oral health education. Objective: This study aims to analyze the knowledge level and toothbrushing skills in fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 3 Sukawati using TikTok video media. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 42 fifth-grade students selected using total sampling. Knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire, while toothbrushing skills were evaluated through an observation checklist. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Shapiro-Wilk test indicated that the data were not normally distributed (p<0.05); therefore, differences between pretest and posttest scores were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 74.52 to 95.11, with an improvement of 20.59 points (27.6%). The mean toothbrushing skill score increased from 38.33 to 99.40, representing an improvement of 61.07 points (159.3%). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed statistically significant differences between pretest and posttest scores for both knowledge (Z≈−5.59; p<0.001) and toothbrushing skills (Z≈−5.66; p<0.001). Cohen's d values of 1.73 for knowledge and 5.24 for skills indicated a very large intervention effect. Conclusion: TikTok video-based oral health education is effective in improving both knowledge and toothbrushing skills among fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Sukawati.
