The living coral cover in the Sempu Strait is known to be stuck in the range of 37% due to average data from 2009-2016. Several coral diseases have been documented in this region, which can result in the transformation of coral reefs into algae-dominated communities. This study examines the dynamic interplay between coral reefs and macroalgae within the marine ecosystems of the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang District, Indonesia. Conducted across five research stations, our analysis utilized the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method, combined with image analysis tools CPCe and Image-J, and statistical analysis through SPSS. The findings indicate a persistent competition between corals and macroalgae, exacerbated by sedimentation from port activities and river discharges, and significant nutrient loads from human settlements. The average living coral coverage varied significantly, with a range from 12% to 53% across the study period, while macroalgae coverage showed an increase, especially in turf algae. The correlation analysis revealed a 'quite strong' relationship (r=0.783 between coral and macroalgae coverage, suggesting that increases in coral cover could potentially facilitate macroalgae proliferation under current environmental conditions. Notably, the study highlighted the critical role of water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, and salinity, which were within optimal ranges yet facilitated competitive interactions. This research underscores the complexity of coral-macroalgae relationships and the pressing need for integrated management strategies focusing on water quality and habitat preservation to ensure the resilience of these critical marine ecosystems.

The long-term survival of coral ecosystems requires the existence of coral recruitment variables that function as agents for future coral generations. The efficacy of this recruitment is crucial for the coral ecology in Sempu Waters, which is renowned for its ongoing loss in coverage. This research aims to determine hard coral cover, the number of coral recruits, and the correlation between hard coral cover and the number of coral recruits. Data was collected using the underwater photo transect method, a widely accepted and reliable technique for assessing coral cover and diversity, at five research stations during 3 observation periods (December 2022, February 2023, and April 2023) and then analyzed using pearson correlation to determine the relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the number of coral recruits. The results show that the coral cover of the Sempu Strait is classified as damaged and has decreased for 3 consecutive months, namely 14.28, 13.92, and 12.57%, and only 22 coral recruits were found in total with 6 identified genera, including Seriatopora, Porites, Pocillopora, Goniastrea, Pavona, and Acropora. The correlation between hard coral cover and coral recruits shows a positive relationship and a fragile level of closeness (r = 0.1119). The availability of stable substrates for recruitment, such as Dead Coral with Algae (DCA), Dead Coral (DC), and Rock (RK), can increase the potential for successful recruitment. However, coral recruits in the Sempu Strait also face competition from other biota, such as macroalgae and adult corals themselves.

Coral diseases and compromised health prevalence in Gili-Noko Waters, Bawean Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 1433-1442. Coral reefs have important ecological and economic functions. Bawean Island, Indonesia known for its natural beauty and rich marine resources, has become an important tourism destination. This research aims to understand how environmental parameters and human activities influence the prevalence of coral diseases and their impact on coral reef diversity. The measurement of coral cover used a combination of Line Intercept Transect (LIT) and transect quadrants, while field data collection for coral disease assessment used a belt transect with a size of 20x2 m. The findings showed that coral cover in Gili-Noko Waters ranged from 65.90% to 74.86%, with various types of coral diseases identified. Identified diseases include Pigmentation Response (PR), Growth Anomaly (GA), White Band Disease (WBD), Yellow Band Disease (YBD), White Patch (WP), White Syndromes (WS), Unusual Bleaching Patterns (BL), Ulcerative White Spot (UWS), Sediment Damage (SD), and Fish Bites (FB). These diseases affect the coral genera. Acropora (437 colonies), Isopora (345 colonies), Echinopora (8 colonies), Porites (160 colonies), Platygyra (12 colonies), Favia (98 colonies), Astreopora (22 colonies), and Lobophyllia (3 colonies). Stylophora (2 colonies), Millepora (13 colonies), and Fungia (7 colonies). The correlation between environmental parameters and disease prevalence shows that dissolved oxygen levels have the most significant influence. Human activities have a significant impact on the health of coral reefs, highlighting the need for effective management and ongoing conservation efforts.

Mangrove diversity and structure of Karimunjawa National Park, Indonesia: Conserving forest patches in small island ecosystem. Biodiversitas 26: 5350-5359. Mangrove forests are vital coastal ecosystems, and in small island settings their conservation requires more attention including continuous assessment. This study investigated the diversity and structural characteristics of mangroves in Karimunjawa National Park (KNP), Indonesia, across zones and forest patches to extend beyond previous research. Field surveys in 39 plots (10 m × 10 m) across 13 locations on Karimunjawa and Kemujan Islands recorded 1,065 individuals from 15 species in eight families. Species density ranged from 5.13 ind./ha (Heritiera littoralis) to 1,230.77 ind./ha (Ceriops tagal), while basal area varied from 0.05 m²/ha (Bruguiera gymnorhiza) to 4.95 m²/ha (Rhizophora apiculata). Ceriops tagal had the highest importance value, followed by R. apiculata, Excoecaria agallocha, and Lumnitzera racemosa. Ecological indices showed moderate species diversity (Shannon–Wiener H’ = 1.73), relatively even distribution (Pielou’s J = 0.64), and low dominance (Simpson’s C = 0.26), indicating a mature and structurally balanced forest, although the community composition reflects dominance by a few key species with lower representation of rare taxa. The relatively high density of dominant species suggests successful regeneration yet highlights potential vulnerability if disturbances disproportionately affect these taxa. Mangroves in small islands setting in KNP are limited in area and highly sensitive to human pressures such as aquaculture and tourism. Safeguarding them is essential for ecosystem services and local livelihoods. Our findings provide baseline data to guide monitoring, zoning, and rare species protection, underscoring the need for integrated management to ensure long-term resilience.
