Coral disease prevalence and compromised health in the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 1404-1412. Since the Dutch colonialization era, the Malang District's Sempu Strait has been designated a natural reserve. Environmental changes and human activities have contributed to the 14.28% coral cover in the Sempu Strait. This study aims to assess coral health in the Sempu Strait and detect coral diseases or compromised conditions. At five stations, data were gathered utilizing the Underwater Photo Transect method with a 10-meter interval and a 1x1 meter transect implemented across 100 meters. The average coral cover in Sempu Strait is 14.28%, considered inadequate according to categories for determining coral reef status. Fish Bite, Black Band Disease (BBD), Ulcerative White Spots (UWS), Non-Focal Bleaching (NFBL), Trematodiasis, and Pigmentation Response are the six categories of coral reef diseases that have been identified. Sediment damage is the only compromised health condition that has been identified. With an average prevalence of 15.35%, Non-Focal Bleaching (NFBL) is the most prevalent disease; Black Band Disease (BBD) has the lowest prevalence at 0.8%. The insufficient coral coverage in the Strait of Sempu is caused by the surrounding environmental conditions that stress corals to the point where the prevalence of coral-eating diseases is increased.

Assessing the resilience of coral reefs against macroalgae invasion in the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2877-2887. The living coral cover in the Sempu Strait is known to be stuck in the range of 37% due to average data from 2009-2016. Several coral diseases have been documented in this region, which can result in the transformation of coral reefs into algae-dominated communities. This study examines the dynamic interplay between coral reefs and macroalgae within the marine ecosystems of the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang District, Indonesia. Conducted across five research stations, our analysis utilized the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method, combined with image analysis tools CPCe and Image-J, and statistical analysis through SPSS. The findings indicate a persistent competition between corals and macroalgae, exacerbated by sedimentation from port activities and river discharges, and significant nutrient loads from human settlements. The average living coral coverage varied significantly, with a range from 12% to 53% across the study period, while macroalgae coverage showed an increase, especially in turf algae. The correlation analysis revealed a 'quite strong' relationship (r=0.783 between coral and macroalgae coverage, suggesting that increases in coral cover could potentially facilitate macroalgae proliferation under current environmental conditions. Notably, the study highlighted the critical role of water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, and salinity, which were within optimal ranges yet facilitated competitive interactions. This research underscores the complexity of coral-macroalgae relationships and the pressing need for integrated management strategies focusing on water quality and habitat preservation to ensure the resilience of these critical marine ecosystems.

Evaluating growth and exploitation dynamics of Thunnus albacares for sustainable fisheries in fishery landed in Bali's Benoa Harbor. Biodiversitas 25: 2858-2869. This study aims to analyze the population dynamics of Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre, 1788), particularly focusing on factors such as length-weight relationships, length frequency distribution, first caught size, gonadal maturity size, growth rate, mortality rate, and exploitation rate. The analysis, conducted using FISAT II software with data from 2018 to February 2022, also includes evaluating fish utilization status. This evaluation involves estimating Allowable Biological Effort (ABE), Allowable Biological Catch (ABC), and Total Allowable Catch (TAC) based on yellowfin tuna (T. albacares) production data from 2012 to 2021 in Bali’s Benoa Harbor. These parameters and analyses are crucial for maintaining the sustainability of catch utilization. This will be achieved using the Feedback Harvest Control Rules (FHCR) with a random sampling method. The length-weight relationship analysis yielded positive allometric growth (b>3), influenced by genetic, environmental, reproductive, and overexploitation factors. The initial catch size value (Lc50%) was determined to be 134.7 cmFL, while the gonadal maturity size (Lm) was estimated to be 103.3 cmFL. Therefore, it is paramount to refrain from fishing before reaching reproductive maturity to ensure the stock's survival. The asymptotic length (L?) was estimated at 235.45 cmFL, t0 -2.91, with a growth rate (K) of 0.20. This indicates a relatively slow growth rate, which is important information for effective fisheries management. The exploitation rate (E) of 0.88 per year indicates overexploitation. Hence, the need for sustainable fishing practices should be noted in certain areas. Applying the FHCR model provides insights into stock estimation and sustainable management strategies that are of value in informing the development of more careful management practices.

Community structure and biomass of reef fish concerning coral cover in Sempu Strait, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3376-3385. Reef fishes were used as bioindicators of biodiversity in coral reef ecosystems. However, coral cover and reef fish abundance around Sempu Strait tended to decrease. The study aims to obtain reef fish's community structure and biomass and their correlation to coral cover. We observed significant variability in reef fish populations through bi-monthly monitoring using an underwater visual census and underwater photo transect conducted from December 2022 to April 2023. Based on these observations, the average range of coral fish abundance was 0.453 to 0.577 individuals per square meter, with the highest value at Rumah Apung station (0.577 ind/m2). The community structure included 81 reef fish species, categorized into major (50 species), indicator (10 species), and target (21 species) groups, demonstrating a community with moderate diversity, stable evenness, and low dominance across the observed stations. Further, the research quantified fish biomass, recording an average of 0.0207 kg/m2 or 207.571 kg/Ha, categorized as low, with the highest biomass measurements at Rumah Apung station (0.0054 kg/m2). Strong correlations were identified between coral cover and both fish abundance (correlation coefficient = 0.741) and biomass (correlation coefficient = 0.666). These results emphasize the profound impact of coral health on the conditions and sustainability of reef fish populations. These findings underscore the critical dependency of reef fish on coral ecosystems and provide essential data for conservation efforts to maintain and restore these vital marine habitats.

Assessing the relationship between coral cover and coral recruitment in the degraded ecosystems of Sempu Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3075-3083. The long-term survival of coral ecosystems requires the existence of coral recruitment variables that function as agents for future coral generations. The efficacy of this recruitment is crucial for the coral ecology in Sempu Waters, which is renowned for its ongoing loss in coverage. This research aims to determine hard coral cover, the number of coral recruits, and the correlation between hard coral cover and the number of coral recruits. Data was collected using the underwater photo transect method, a widely accepted and reliable technique for assessing coral cover and diversity, at five research stations during 3 observation periods (December 2022, February 2023, and April 2023) and then analyzed using pearson correlation to determine the relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the number of coral recruits. The results show that the coral cover of the Sempu Strait is classified as damaged and has decreased for 3 consecutive months, namely 14.28, 13.92, and 12.57%, and only 22 coral recruits were found in total with 6 identified genera, including Seriatopora, Porites, Pocillopora, Goniastrea, Pavona, and Acropora. The correlation between hard coral cover and coral recruits shows a positive relationship and a fragile level of closeness (r = 0.1119). The availability of stable substrates for recruitment, such as Dead Coral with Algae (DCA), Dead Coral (DC), and Rock (RK), can increase the potential for successful recruitment. However, coral recruits in the Sempu Strait also face competition from other biota, such as macroalgae and adult corals themselves.

Coral reefs, which play a vital role in tropical marine ecosystems, are threatened by anthropogenic and natural stressors, despite their important ecological and economic roles. This study examines the resilience of coral ecosystems through the lens of juvenile coral populations at Floating House Beach, which is part of the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method along a 100-meter reference line with a 1 × 1-meter transect, our study found that coral cover was severely damaged, with live coral cover of only 18.67% and 17.61% at two observation stations, which was dominated by the life form CM (Coral Massive) at both stations. However, twelve juvenile coral genera were identified that showed potential for natural recovery, namely Acropora, Favia, Favites, Galaxea, Leptoseris, Montipora, Mycedium, Platygyra, Pocillopora, Porites, Stylophora, and Turbinaria. Juvenile coral densities were low, at 0.55 and 0.88 colonies/m², indicating a very low coral recruitment category with Pocillopora being the most common. Spatial distribution, analyzed using the Morisita Index, showed a predominantly clumped arrangement (Ip>0), indicating non-random aggregation of juveniles. The results of this study highlight the significant impact of environmental stressors on juvenile coral communities and underscore the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts to support coral resilience and recovery.

Coral diseases and compromised health prevalence in Gili-Noko Waters, Bawean Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 1433-1442. Coral reefs have important ecological and economic functions. Bawean Island, Indonesia known for its natural beauty and rich marine resources, has become an important tourism destination. This research aims to understand how environmental parameters and human activities influence the prevalence of coral diseases and their impact on coral reef diversity. The measurement of coral cover used a combination of Line Intercept Transect (LIT) and transect quadrants, while field data collection for coral disease assessment used a belt transect with a size of 20x2 m. The findings showed that coral cover in Gili-Noko Waters ranged from 65.90% to 74.86%, with various types of coral diseases identified. Identified diseases include Pigmentation Response (PR), Growth Anomaly (GA), White Band Disease (WBD), Yellow Band Disease (YBD), White Patch (WP), White Syndromes (WS), Unusual Bleaching Patterns (BL), Ulcerative White Spot (UWS), Sediment Damage (SD), and Fish Bites (FB). These diseases affect the coral genera. Acropora (437 colonies), Isopora (345 colonies), Echinopora (8 colonies), Porites (160 colonies), Platygyra (12 colonies), Favia (98 colonies), Astreopora (22 colonies), and Lobophyllia (3 colonies). Stylophora (2 colonies), Millepora (13 colonies), and Fungia (7 colonies). The correlation between environmental parameters and disease prevalence shows that dissolved oxygen levels have the most significant influence. Human activities have a significant impact on the health of coral reefs, highlighting the need for effective management and ongoing conservation efforts.

Spatial analysis of fish species composition in relation to fishing gear in the upper stream of Brantas River, Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 4193-4200. Inland water ecosystems in Indonesia, particularly in East Java with the Brantas River, hold significant potential for capture fisheries and aquaculture. Covering an area of 13.85 million hectares, this ecosystem includes rivers, natural lakes, and man-made reservoirs. The potential fish resources are projected to be substantial, with the capacity to enhance employment opportunities and boost regional income. However, the management and utilization of fisheries resources in inland waters remain underdeveloped, requiring optimization through appropriate policies and supportive infrastructure. The upper stream of the Brantas River not only provides water for industries and local water utilities but also functions as a critical habitat for various fish species, despite being predominantly managed by small-scale fishers. This study aims to evaluate the composition of fish catches based on fishing area and gear type in the Malang Raya Region of the Brantas River. A descriptive approach was employed for data collection, using random sampling from fishers at seven designated sampling stations. Data were collected within the rainy season through direct observation, interviews, and documentation. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Chi-Square methods, utilizing Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 27. The results indicate that variations in species composition of the catch were significantly influenced by the sampling stations and the types of fishing gear used.
