Abstract

The Brondong Fishing Port is the largest in East Java. The catches landed in the Brondong fishing port increase, but they are insufficient to meet the raw material necessity of the existing processing industry. The study aims at estimating fish availability and the necessity of raw materials for the fish processing industry in the Brondong fishing port. This research was conducted from January to March 2022 by using a descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews and a literature study. The results revealed that the installed capacity for eight fish processing industries in the Brondong fishing port counted as 123,300 tons/year. Starry triggerfish, Lizard fishes, Streaked spine foot, freckled goatfish, squid, croaker, red snapper, spotted sil, grouper, threadfin breams, hardtail, big eyes, and yellow pike conger were all necessary for the processing industry. In contrast, the estimation of fish availability for the fish processing industry at Brondong fishing port counted as 45,086 tons/year. It indicated a gap between fish availability and the demand from the fish processing industry in the Brondong fishing port. This may impact the fish processing industry's development in the Brondong fishing port. Keywords: Raw material necessity, fish availability, fish processing industry

Abstract

Seagrass bed has an important role for biota in waters. The existence of fish in seagrass is influenced by other ecosystems close to seagrass, such as mangroves and coral reefs. This study focuses on fish associated with seagrass in Bama Beach. The data include seagrass coverage and the number of fish for the Diversity, Uniformity, and Dominance. The study was carried out on March 15 to 20, 2018 using the Underwater Visual Census. Results show that seagrass cover was highest in seagrass stations near mangroves (62,66%), while at stations near coral reefs was 37,66. The composition of fish associated with seagrass near mangroves was 361 individuals, while near reefs was 1.454 individuals. The values of diversity, uniformity, and dominance of fish associated with seagrass near mangroves are 2,62; 0,88; and 0,09 respectively while those associated with coral reefs have values of 2,93; 0,85; and 0,06. Family Aulostomidae was dominant in the morning at the station near mangroves, and in the afternoon was dominated by Apogonidae. At the station near coral reefs, the Family Pomacentridae was dominant both in the morning and afternoon. The seagrass conditions in this study are in the healthy category with quite diverse fishes. The level of fish diversity in seagrass was influenced by habitats associated with seagrasses than seagrass cover levels. The condition of Bama Beach as a conservation area is quite good, but the activity of tourists around the coastline must be monitored to maintain the environment.

Abstract

Fish catch production landed at Bulu Tuban Fishing Port exhibits monthly fluctuations with a clear seasonal pattern, indicating the need for a forecasting approach capable of representing such dynamics. This study aimed to identify the monthly time-series pattern of fish production at Bulu Tuban Fishing Port and to develop a forecasting model using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) approach. The analysis used secondary monthly fish production data from January 2019 to December 2024, comprising 72 observations. Modeling followed the Box–Jenkins procedure through time-series visualization, non-seasonal differencing, seasonal differencing, identification of candidate models based on ACF and PACF, and model estimation and selection. Model performance was evaluated using the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), while residual adequacy was assessed using the Ljung–Box test. The results show that SARIMA was the best model, with a BIC of 10.797, RMSE of 199.346, MAPE of 207.607, and residuals satisfying the white-noise assumption . The model was able to represent the historical and seasonal structure of the data; however, given the relatively high MAPE, the forecast should be interpreted more cautiously as a projection of general production patterns for 2025 rather than a high-precision monthly numerical prediction.

Abstract. Rosdianto, Luthfi OM, Ardiansyah AR, Luthfi MAB, Isdianto A, Setyoningrum D, Setyanto A, Hidayah LN, Fathah AL, Putri BM, Wardana NK, Supriyadi. 2024. Observation of Scleractinian juveniles' composition, distribution, and density in shallow waters of Kondang Merak Beach, Southern Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2663-2668. Kondang Merak Waters, a habitat for various hard corals that grow in flat areas of intertidal reefs, serve as a crucial location for understanding the influence of juvenile corals on the dynamics of coral communities in shallow waters. The research was conducted in 2020 in Kondang Merak, which studied the composition and abundance of young corals on natural substrates on shallow reef flats and reef slopes. Quadrant transects measuring 1x1 m were deliberately placed to observe coral juveniles at two research stations. Quadrant transects are placed along a 100-meter line transect. Visible juvenile corals are counted and identified at the genus or species level. The six types of coral juveniles identified are Favites flexuosa, Goniastrea favulus, Goniastrea aspera, Porites lobata, Montipora digitata and Montipora foliosa. The overall density of juveniles is low, ranging from 0.01-0.08 colonies m-2, with the highest density belonging to F. flexuosa and the lowest belonging to M. foliosa. The six species found showed a clustered distribution pattern, except for two species, namely Goniastrea aspera and M. foliosa, which showed a uniform distribution pattern. Coral juveniles have specific strategies depending on biology and environmental factors. This study revealed the distribution and composition of coral juveniles in intertidal areas as representative of dynamic ecosystems in coastal areas.

Abstract. Isdianto A, Wibowo RA, Kudrati AV, Aliviyanti D, Asadi MA, Dewi CSU, Setyanto A, Lelono TD, Tumulyadi A, Hidayah LN, Fathah AL, Putri BM, Wardana NK, Supriyadi, Luthfi OM. 2024. Assessing the relationship between coral cover and coral recruitment in the degraded ecosystems of Sempu Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3075-3083. The long-term survival of coral ecosystems requires the existence of coral recruitment variables that function as agents for future coral generations. The efficacy of this recruitment is crucial for the coral ecology in Sempu Waters, which is renowned for its ongoing loss in coverage. This research aims to determine hard coral cover, the number of coral recruits, and the correlation between hard coral cover and the number of coral recruits. Data was collected using the underwater photo transect method, a widely accepted and reliable technique for assessing coral cover and diversity, at five research stations during 3 observation periods (December 2022, February 2023, and April 2023) and then analyzed using pearson correlation to determine the relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the number of coral recruits. The results show that the coral cover of the Sempu Strait is classified as damaged and has decreased for 3 consecutive months, namely 14.28, 13.92, and 12.57%, and only 22 coral recruits were found in total with 6 identified genera, including Seriatopora, Porites, Pocillopora, Goniastrea, Pavona, and Acropora. The correlation between hard coral cover and coral recruits shows a positive relationship and a fragile level of closeness (r = 0.1119). The availability of stable substrates for recruitment, such as Dead Coral with Algae (DCA), Dead Coral (DC), and Rock (RK), can increase the potential for successful recruitment. However, coral recruits in the Sempu Strait also face competition from other biota, such as macroalgae and adult corals themselves.

Abstract. Isdianto A, Ishaq SY, Yamindago A, Iranawati F, Yanuar AT, Hidayah LN, Marsela K, Adhihapsari W, Lelono TD, Fathah AL, Atikawati D, Putri BM, Wardana NK, Supriyadi, Luthfi OM. 2024. Population and distribution patterns of juvenile scleractinian corals in Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3480-3490. Coral reefs, which play a vital role in tropical marine ecosystems, are threatened by anthropogenic and natural stressors, despite their important ecological and economic roles. This study examines the resilience of coral ecosystems through the lens of juvenile coral populations at Floating House Beach, which is part of the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method along a 100-meter reference line with a 1 × 1-meter transect, our study found that coral cover was severely damaged, with live coral cover of only 18.67% and 17.61% at two observation stations, which was dominated by the life form CM (Coral Massive) at both stations. However, twelve juvenile coral genera were identified that showed potential for natural recovery, namely Acropora, Favia, Favites, Galaxea, Leptoseris, Montipora, Mycedium, Platygyra, Pocillopora, Porites, Stylophora, and Turbinaria. Juvenile coral densities were low, at 0.55 and 0.88 colonies/m², indicating a very low coral recruitment category with Pocillopora being the most common. Spatial distribution, analyzed using the Morisita Index, showed a predominantly clumped arrangement (Ip>0), indicating non-random aggregation of juveniles. The results of this study highlight the significant impact of environmental stressors on juvenile coral communities and underscore the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts to support coral resilience and recovery.

Abstract. Isdianto A, Gibran K, Yamindago A, Sari SHJ, Yanuar AT, Setyoningrum D, Setyanto A, Hidayah LN, Marsela K, Haykal MF, Fathah AL, Putri BM, Supriyadi, Luthfi OM, Pratiwi DC. 2024. Environmental determinants of reef fish community structure in Sempu Strait, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 4781-4789. The Rumah Apung located in Sempu Strait, Malang District, East Java, Indonesia, is home to diverse coral reef ecosystems that provide vital ecological services and support local livelihoods. However, these ecosystems face significant threats from both natural environmental changes and anthropogenic activities. Understanding how environmental factors influence reef fish communities is critical to inform effective conservation strategies. This study investigated the influence of environmental factors on the community structure of coral reef fish in the Sempu Strait waters, East Java, using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Conducted from August 2023 to May 2024 at the Sempu Strait Floating House Station, this study aimed to assess the impact of water quality, substrate type, and food availability on the diversity and abundance of coral reef fish. The main results revealed a significant correlation between the community structure of coral reef fish and environmental variables such as water clarity, salinity (r = 0.65, p<0.01), pH (r = 0.55, p<0.05), dissolved oxygen (r = 0.70, p<0.01), and sediment type. Seasonal variations significantly affected water quality, with cold nutrient-rich water during the east monsoon increasing fish biomass by about 30%. Human activities, especially recreational diving and fishing activities, were correlated with a 20% decline in coral reef fish populations, highlighting the anthropogenic pressure on this ecosystem. PCA provides insight into the complex interdependencies within coral reef ecosystems, illustrating how multiple environmental factors combine to influence reef fish dynamics. The study concludes that effective management and conservation strategies, such as establishing marine protected areas, implementing community-based monitoring programs, and promoting sustainable tourism practices, are essential, supported by regular environmental monitoring, are essential to maintain the biodiversity and ecological integrity of coral reefs in the Sempu Strait. These strategies should address both natural environmental changes and anthropogenic impacts to mitigate their adverse effects on coral reef ecosystem conditions.
