Coral disease prevalence and compromised health in the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 1404-1412. Since the Dutch colonialization era, the Malang District's Sempu Strait has been designated a natural reserve. Environmental changes and human activities have contributed to the 14.28% coral cover in the Sempu Strait. This study aims to assess coral health in the Sempu Strait and detect coral diseases or compromised conditions. At five stations, data were gathered utilizing the Underwater Photo Transect method with a 10-meter interval and a 1x1 meter transect implemented across 100 meters. The average coral cover in Sempu Strait is 14.28%, considered inadequate according to categories for determining coral reef status. Fish Bite, Black Band Disease (BBD), Ulcerative White Spots (UWS), Non-Focal Bleaching (NFBL), Trematodiasis, and Pigmentation Response are the six categories of coral reef diseases that have been identified. Sediment damage is the only compromised health condition that has been identified. With an average prevalence of 15.35%, Non-Focal Bleaching (NFBL) is the most prevalent disease; Black Band Disease (BBD) has the lowest prevalence at 0.8%. The insufficient coral coverage in the Strait of Sempu is caused by the surrounding environmental conditions that stress corals to the point where the prevalence of coral-eating diseases is increased.

Reef fishes were used as bioindicators of biodiversity in coral reef ecosystems. However, coral cover and reef fish abundance around Sempu Strait tended to decrease. The study aims to obtain reef fish's community structure and biomass and their correlation to coral cover. We observed significant variability in reef fish populations through bi-monthly monitoring using an underwater visual census and underwater photo transect conducted from December 2022 to April 2023. Based on these observations, the average range of coral fish abundance was 0.453 to 0.577 individuals per square meter, with the highest value at Rumah Apung station (0.577 ind/m2). The community structure included 81 reef fish species, categorized into major (50 species), indicator (10 species), and target (21 species) groups, demonstrating a community with moderate diversity, stable evenness, and low dominance across the observed stations. Further, the research quantified fish biomass, recording an average of 0.0207 kg/m2 or 207.571 kg/Ha, categorized as low, with the highest biomass measurements at Rumah Apung station (0.0054 kg/m2). Strong correlations were identified between coral cover and both fish abundance (correlation coefficient = 0.741) and biomass (correlation coefficient = 0.666). These results emphasize the profound impact of coral health on the conditions and sustainability of reef fish populations. These findings underscore the critical dependency of reef fish on coral ecosystems and provide essential data for conservation efforts to maintain and restore these vital marine habitats.

Observation of Scleractinian juveniles' composition, distribution, and density in shallow waters of Kondang Merak Beach, Southern Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 2663-2668. Kondang Merak Waters, a habitat for various hard corals that grow in flat areas of intertidal reefs, serve as a crucial location for understanding the influence of juvenile corals on the dynamics of coral communities in shallow waters. The research was conducted in 2020 in Kondang Merak, which studied the composition and abundance of young corals on natural substrates on shallow reef flats and reef slopes. Quadrant transects measuring 1x1 m were deliberately placed to observe coral juveniles at two research stations. Quadrant transects are placed along a 100-meter line transect. Visible juvenile corals are counted and identified at the genus or species level. The six types of coral juveniles identified are Favites flexuosa, Goniastrea favulus, Goniastrea aspera, Porites lobata, Montipora digitata and Montipora foliosa. The overall density of juveniles is low, ranging from 0.01-0.08 colonies m-2, with the highest density belonging to F. flexuosa and the lowest belonging to M. foliosa. The six species found showed a clustered distribution pattern, except for two species, namely Goniastrea aspera and M. foliosa, which showed a uniform distribution pattern. Coral juveniles have specific strategies depending on biology and environmental factors. This study revealed the distribution and composition of coral juveniles in intertidal areas as representative of dynamic ecosystems in coastal areas.

Assessing the relationship between coral cover and coral recruitment in the degraded ecosystems of Sempu Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3075-3083. The long-term survival of coral ecosystems requires the existence of coral recruitment variables that function as agents for future coral generations. The efficacy of this recruitment is crucial for the coral ecology in Sempu Waters, which is renowned for its ongoing loss in coverage. This research aims to determine hard coral cover, the number of coral recruits, and the correlation between hard coral cover and the number of coral recruits. Data was collected using the underwater photo transect method, a widely accepted and reliable technique for assessing coral cover and diversity, at five research stations during 3 observation periods (December 2022, February 2023, and April 2023) and then analyzed using pearson correlation to determine the relationship between the percentage of coral cover and the number of coral recruits. The results show that the coral cover of the Sempu Strait is classified as damaged and has decreased for 3 consecutive months, namely 14.28, 13.92, and 12.57%, and only 22 coral recruits were found in total with 6 identified genera, including Seriatopora, Porites, Pocillopora, Goniastrea, Pavona, and Acropora. The correlation between hard coral cover and coral recruits shows a positive relationship and a fragile level of closeness (r = 0.1119). The availability of stable substrates for recruitment, such as Dead Coral with Algae (DCA), Dead Coral (DC), and Rock (RK), can increase the potential for successful recruitment. However, coral recruits in the Sempu Strait also face competition from other biota, such as macroalgae and adult corals themselves.

Population and distribution patterns of juvenile scleractinian corals in Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3480-3490. Coral reefs, which play a vital role in tropical marine ecosystems, are threatened by anthropogenic and natural stressors, despite their important ecological and economic roles. This study examines the resilience of coral ecosystems through the lens of juvenile coral populations at Floating House Beach, which is part of the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, East Java, Indonesia. Using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method along a 100-meter reference line with a 1 × 1-meter transect, our study found that coral cover was severely damaged, with live coral cover of only 18.67% and 17.61% at two observation stations, which was dominated by the life form CM (Coral Massive) at both stations. However, twelve juvenile coral genera were identified that showed potential for natural recovery, namely Acropora, Favia, Favites, Galaxea, Leptoseris, Montipora, Mycedium, Platygyra, Pocillopora, Porites, Stylophora, and Turbinaria. Juvenile coral densities were low, at 0.55 and 0.88 colonies/m², indicating a very low coral recruitment category with Pocillopora being the most common. Spatial distribution, analyzed using the Morisita Index, showed a predominantly clumped arrangement (Ip>0), indicating non-random aggregation of juveniles. The results of this study highlight the significant impact of environmental stressors on juvenile coral communities and underscore the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts to support coral resilience and recovery.
