Abstract

Objective: This study examines how information overload (IO) influences purchase avoidance (PA) among Generation Z consumers in Indonesia and Malaysia, focusing on the mediating roles of cyberchondria (CY) and consumer confusion (CC), and exploring gender differences in these effects. Gender-specific responses to IO in Gen Z remain underexplored in developing regions, despite their importance for digital marketing strategies. Research Design & Methods: This study employed a quantitative method using PLS-SEM, with data collected via questionnaires from 426 Gen Z respondents in Indonesia (192) and Malaysia (204) through accidental sampling. Findings: Information overload raises cyberchondria and confusion in both genders but does not directly impact purchase avoidance. Cyberchondria mediates the IO–PA link for all, while confusion mediates it only for females. Research Implications: Findings indicate that information overload affects Gen Z’s purchase avoidance mainly through psychological factors, with cyberchondria mediating for all and confusion influencing only females. Practical Implications: Marketers should simplify information and address health-related anxiety, particularly in female Gen Z, to reduce purchase avoidance. Social Implications: The study highlights psychological challenges, such as confusion and health anxiety that affect Gen Z’s well-being and decision-making in dense online information environments. Contribution & Value Added: This research shows information overload indirectly affects Gen Z’s purchase avoidance, with cyberchondria and confusion as key mediators and gender differences in the confusion pathway.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Social Media Marketing Activities (SMMA) in influencing purchase decisions, with purchase intention as a mediating variable and brand image as a moderating variable, focusing on Sweet Mango, a local fashion brand in Jepara, Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 97 respondents through online surveys and interviews, employing a purposive non-probability sampling method. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results reveal that SMMA significantly enhances purchase intention, which in turn strongly influences purchase decisions. Furthermore, purchase intention mediates the relationship between SMMA and purchase decisions. While brand image does not directly affect purchase intention, it plays a significant moderating role by strengthening the relationship between SMMA and purchase intention. Additionally, SMMA indirectly impacts purchase decisions through its influence on purchase intention. These findings underscore the critical importance of leveraging social media marketing strategies to drive consumer behavior while simultaneously building a strong brand image to maximize effectiveness. The study contributes to the literature by addressing inconsistencies in the relationship between brand image and consumer behavior and offers practical insights for local businesses aiming to optimize their digital marketing efforts. Limitations include the small sample size and focus on a single brand, suggesting opportunities for broader future research.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the relationships of Social Media Marketing, Electronic Word of Mouth (E-WOM), and Brand Trust with Repurchase Intention through Customer Satisfaction among Glad2Glow consumers in Jepara Regency. Research Method: A cross-sectional survey involved 154 consumers selected through purposive sampling. Respondents had purchased Glad2Glow products at least twice and used social media. Data were analyzed using PLS-SEM with SmartPLS. Results and Discussion: The estimates indicated positive relationships between the three antecedents, Customer Satisfaction, and Repurchase Intention. E-WOM showed the greatest association with Customer Satisfaction, whereas Brand Trust had weak importance. However, Customer Satisfaction and Repurchase Intention failed to demonstrate discriminant validity because their indicators overlapped. The structural and mediation findings therefore remain provisional. Implications: Glad2Glow should prioritize credible reviews, informative social media communication, transparent information, and consistent product quality. Future studies should use distinct validated measures. Originality: This study evaluates digital marketing, consumer information, and brand-related confidence within an emerging Indonesian skincare context while identifying measurement redundancy that limits mediation conclusions.
