Abstract

This article aims to get a better understanding of the text-picture interaction and, in particular, the pragmatic consequences of 150 online memes that feature puns, one of the linguistic humor subgenres. This article will analyze a corpus of 150 memes. Using a comic taxonomy by McCloud (1994). The internet memes then were to be categorized. The default taxonomy of categories produced the following classification of internet memes: word specific (28), picture specific (2), additive (29), and interdependent (91). The findings show rather significant disparities among the findings. Some categories in the original taxomony are even absent in the data set.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of genders in five Indonesian EFL textbooks published by Erlangga Publishing and unveil the ideology and attitudes behind the image of genders. The methods of critical discourse analysis (CDA) proposed by Van Dijk, which comprise discourse, social cognition, and discourse and society, are used to unveil the patterns of gender portrayal and the attitudes behind it. Data for this study are the human images in five Indonesian EFL textbooks published by Erlangga Publishing. This study reveals that in terms of frequency, women are more dominant than men; women’s images appear more frequently than men's. In dealing with other aspects under study, men and women are depicted symmetrically. The symmetrical representation between men and women suggests the attitude and ideology of gender equality the authors uphold.

Abstract

This research attempted to discover the positive self-presentation built by Ahok as the speaker and the former of DKI Jakarta governor through his speech in front of Kepulauan Seribu residents. It is done by applying Fairclough’s CDA involving conventional implicature, positive connotation, speech act, and political communication. The result of the study shown that there were eight positive characters representing positive self-presentation found in the study which suggested that Ahok had a firm, simple, wise, discipline, fair, caring, positive thinking, and confident personality. The Firmness was manifested in nine data, the simplicity appeared in two data, the wisdom occurred in ten data, the discipline revealed in three data, the fairness were presented in three data, the care was realized in two data, the positive thinking come up in one datum, and the confidence appeared in four data. Thus from those finding, it could be drawn as the conclusion that firmness and wisdom were the positive-self presentations mostly delivered by Ahok in his speech.

Abstract

One of the cultural heritages in Indonesia which tell about the social life or human nature is puppet show or “Wayang”. This research investigates Illocutionary Acts and Politeness Strategies Implied in one of the Puppet Show Characters “Bambang Wisanggeni”. This study aims to reveal the types of illocutionary acts and politeness strategies. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the transcript of Bambang Wisanggeni’s story. The study revealed that the types of illocutionary acts found in Bambang Wisanggeni’s story were directive, assertive, commissive, and expressive. However, declarative act was not evident in this study since the character of Bambang Wisanggeni did not have power to do immediate changes with his utterances. Meanwhile, the types of politeness strategies found in Bambang Wisanggeni’s utterances were bald on record strategy, positive politeness, and negative politeness. Off record strategies was not observed in this study because the whole utterance stated by the Bambang Wisanggeni was stated directly and clearly.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the maxim flouted and the reasons for conveying social criticism done by Abdurrahmin Arsyad in stand-up comedy season 4. This was a descriptive research with an observation method applied to collect data. The data were in the form of the utterances of Abdurrahim’s performance on stage, while the data source was taken from some videos of Abdurrahmin Arsyad’s.The results showed four types of maxim were flouted: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner maxims. The reasons for those flouted maxims were to amuse the audience.To indicate politeness in conveying criticism, Abdurrahim also chose metaphor, rhetoric question, and irony through humor way.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the perceptions of English education students in the sixth semester toward the use of code-mixing in the main activity of the teaching and learning process at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The research design is a survey with a quantitative approach. The data were obtained from 26 English students in the sixth semester that had filled out a link questionnaire that had been distributed. Based on findings obtained from the questionnaire, revealed that 77% of students have a positive perception, they also agreed that the use of code-mixing has a positive impact on them; it can be used to make fun and lively learning in the classroom and easy to understand the lesson. 19% of students have a neutral perception of the impact of code-mixing. Then, 4% of students who have a negative perception think that code-mixing does not positively impact them, and they feel uncomfortable when using code-mixing in the English teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Gender inequality remains a prevalent issue in countries such as Indonesia in many communication and social media. One such medium is EFL textbooks. This qualitative study aimed to investigate how visual gender representation in EFL textbooks and describe social factors contributing to the patterns of the representation. The data for this study were human images in three EFL textbooks for senior high school students in Indonesia published by the Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia. Coding and classifying were the methods of data collection. Three dimensions of discourse—description, interpretation, and explanation—were used as the framework for the data analysis. The current study reveals that females and males are visually represented symmetrically, yet the stereotyping of males and females remains prevalent. Women’s movement might be the backgrounding of the depiction of the two genders in a symmetrical position. However, subtle conventional gender stereotypes are also portrayed in this study.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the types and functions of euphemism expressions used by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a political debate text, and also to reveal the differences between men and women in the use of euphemisms under the theory of language and gender. This study used descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences uttered by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in a political debate and were collected by transcription technique. The data then were analyzed in the form of euphemism guided by Warren's (1992) model of euphemism and the functions of euphemism by the theory of Ryabova (2013). The result found 25 data of euphemisms. There were 10 euphemism expressions used by Donald Trump and 15 euphemism expressions used by Hillary Clinton. The result showed that women used euphemistic expressions more frequently than men because women prefer to be more polite and less direct directives than men.
