Abstract

In teaching English in vocational high schools, it is important to understand technical documents in English and use available technology to aid learning. However, various English teaching problems in vocational high schools in Indonesia still exist. Based on that background, this study will reveal teachers' and students' challenges in teaching English in vocational high schools. The researchers used a systematic literature review research design to gather the data accurately. However, the researchers selected the articles based on the exclusion and inclusion categories, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis methods. The findings stated that collaborative research was the most common approach in studying this topic, with ten studies conducted by multiple authors and only two conducted by individuals. The study also found that the case study method is the most commonly used for investigating the challenges of teaching English in vocational high schools, followed by descriptive qualitative research. Additionally, the analysis revealed a significant interest in the role of ICT in these challenges, as it is the third relevant word in the journals. In brief, 19 categories of challenges have been discovered from 12 articles. As the central part of the study, the results show that students’ motivation to learn English becomes the most apparent challenge faced by teachers in vocational high schools, followed by students’ language proficiency in the second position. Furthermore, the study found a close relationship between students' language proficiency and motivation, with highly motivated students achieving higher scores in English lessons. Other challenges identified in the survey include school facilities such as electricity, a language laboratory, an internet connection, and appropriate media or platforms to allow students to use English for communication and interaction.

Abstract

A thorough need analysis (NA) is essential for designing effective instructional materials, particularly in the context of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) primary school students. Despite the increasing demand for ready-to-use CLIL materials, little research has explored the specific needs of students in this context. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, focusing on the NA phase to gather insights into students’ attitudes and material preferences for CLIL instruction. A total of 93 EFL primary school students participated in the study, with data collected via an online questionnaire that addressed two key aspects: students' attitudes toward learning English and their needs for learning materials through the CLIL approach. The data were analyzed using basic statistical methods in JASP software. The results indicated that while students generally hold a positive attitude toward learning English—particularly regarding its importance, their intention to continue learning, and intrinsic motivation—they do not consider English their preferred subject, and their interest in CLIL-related activities remains moderate. Regarding material needs, students preferred interactive and engaging methods, particularly through multimedia resources, group work, and technology integration. They also prioritized improving listening and vocabulary skills. Additionally, students showed strong interest in topics related to personal experiences and global issues, such as leisure activities, nature, and sports, while displaying less enthusiasm for academic subjects like geography and literature. These findings offer helpful input for developing digital CLIL materials better aligned with young learners’ interests and learning preferences.

Abstract

The shift from traditional to digital textbooks in education brings both prospects and hurdles, especially in teaching English to young learners. Despite the widespread adoption of digital textbooks, their impact on students' language skills and teacher-student interaction needs more exploration. This study aims to thoroughly evaluate how digital textbooks affect English comprehension and production among young learners and teachers. The research conducted at SDS Islam Ar-Risalah Jember involved two teachers and eleven students, employing a descriptive qualitative method. Observations, interviews, and document analysis were utilized to gather data, analyzed through the Miles and Huberman method, pinpointing trends in digital textbook usage and understanding. Results suggest digital English textbooks significantly improve young learners' and teachers' English skills, enhancing speaking, reading, writing, and listening abilities. These resources offer a dynamic and interactive educational experience. However, transitioning to digital tools introduces challenges like infrastructural limitations and the need for teaching method adjustments. Addressing these issues is essential for fully leveraging digital textbooks in education. In conclusion, while digital textbooks can boost English language mastery among young learners and teachers, realizing this potential requires overcoming certain technological and pedagogical obstacles.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, serovar, and risk factors of leptospirosis on cattle in Progo watershed. A total of 330 cattle samples were clinically examined and blood was collected for Leptospira examination using microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Results of MAT were used as dependent variable (Y), while breeders, cattle, shed, and feed factors were used as the independent variable (X). Univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with chi square, odds ratio, and multivariate with logistic regression were implemented to analyze the data. The results showed that all cattle were cinically health, 13.03% (43/330) cattle were positively leptospirosis which 37 out of 193 (9.17%) cattle belongs to the farmer. Mostly, leptospirosis cases were caused by hardjo serovar (38.0%). Risk factors influencing the prevalence of leptospirosis were caused by some factors such as the presence of rats in cage (OR 2.7), the distance of waste disposal which should be less than approximately 5 meters (OR 2.1), feed concentrates, grass and rice straw (OR 0.4), grazing (OR 0.2), and concentrate feed and rice straw (OR 0.1). It can be concluded that leptospirosis infection on cattle in Progo watershed is 13.03% (at livestock level) and 19.17% (at farm levels). Factors of rat in the cage and the distance of waste disposal (5 m) increase the risk of leptospirosis cases. Factors of feed combine with concentrate and rice straw as well as grazing reduced the risk of leptospirosis in cattle, but the addition of grass in concentrate feed and rice straw provides a greater risk of leptospirosis infection compare to concentrate feed and rice straw alone.Key words: beef cattle, leptospirosis, prevalence, risk factors

Abstract

Reading skill has been found to be one of difficult skills to achieve for many learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Importantly, based on the preliminary study, narrative texts  are deemed to be difficult.  This study was conducted to investigate the students’ difficulties in reading text at a private primary school in Batu, involving 29 ninth grade students in the academic year of 2018-2019 as the samples. Employing the purposive sampling method by which the best class was selected, the researcher used10-items of a closed-ended questionnaire to collect the data. In the analysis, some aspects of the narrative text such as words, structure, language feature, character, setting, plot, moral value, and point of view were highlighted. Consistently, narrative texts were found to be the most difficult text faced by students at school. According to the English teacher, students got the difficulties because of lack of vocabulary, the use of simple past tense, and the instruction to make sense of the moral values. Further, difficulties pertain to the effort to comprehend the structure, point of view, and the words.

Abstract

Gender inequality remains a prevalent issue in countries such as Indonesia in many communication and social media. One such medium is EFL textbooks. This qualitative study aimed to investigate how visual gender representation in EFL textbooks and describe social factors contributing to the patterns of the representation. The data for this study were human images in three EFL textbooks for senior high school students in Indonesia published by the Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia. Coding and classifying were the methods of data collection. Three dimensions of discourse—description, interpretation, and explanation—were used as the framework for the data analysis. The current study reveals that females and males are visually represented symmetrically, yet the stereotyping of males and females remains prevalent. Women’s movement might be the backgrounding of the depiction of the two genders in a symmetrical position. However, subtle conventional gender stereotypes are also portrayed in this study.
