Abstract

 Background: Indonesia is experiencing a double nutritional problem, undernutrition problem and overnutrition problem.  Excess body weight has an effect on oral health. Underweight individuals have a risk of experiencing hyposalivation and caries. Changes the condition of the oral cavity that occur in the BMI category are related to the rate of saliva flow. BMI is positively correlated with salivary gland size.Method: The type of the research used analytical observational  with a cross sectional approach. BMI is calculated by comparing body weight to height squared. The prevalence of caries is calculated using the decayed, missing, filled-teeth index (def-t or DMF-T). Caries risk assessment is carried out using the CAMBRA method.Result: 22.8% of children with underweight BMI had a caries index of 4.34 and 50% had a high risk of caries. The results of the Spearman correlation test between BMI and the caries index obtained a significance value of 0.046, so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between BMI and the caries index. The results of the correlation test between BMI and caries risk assessment obtained a significance value of 0.070, so it can be concluded that there is no relationship between BMI and caries risk.Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between Body Mass Index and  the caries index. There is no significant relationship between Body Mass Index and caries risk assessment using the CAMBRA method in children living in coastal areas

Abstract

Abstrak: Kesehatan  gigi dan  mulut  di  Indonesia  masih  merupakan  masalah  kesehatan  yang perlu diperhatikan terutama pada anak – anak di usia sekolah dasar. Salah satu upaya untuk mengatasi masalahan kesehatan gigi dan mulut di Indonesia serta partisipasi para dokter gigi dalam menunjang program “Indonesia Bebas Karies 2030”,  khususnya pada kelompok  masyarakat  usia  sekolah  dan  dewasa. Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Hang Tuah Surabaya bekerja sama dengan Unilever melakukan   kegiatan promotif – preventif. Kegiatan tersebut dinamai “Training of Trainer”. Program ini dilakukan di SDN Keputih 245 Surabaya dengan beberapa kegiatan yang dilakukan diantaranya yaitu pemberian pelatihan tentang kesehatan gigi dan mulut, cara menyikat gigi yangbenar dan pemantauan terhadap waktu menyikat gigi yang benar.  Hasil akhir dari program ini  diharapkan  dapat  mencegah  meningkatnya  derajat  kesehatan  gigi  dan  mulut  khususnya di SDN Keputih 245 Surabaya.

Abstract

Background: Application of fissure sealants to young permanent teeth is one of the preventive measures for caries in the field of dentistry. Fissure sealants based on glass ionomer cement (GIC) have the advantage of releasing fluoride. Sodium fluoride and acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) are remineralization agents because they can increase remineralization by altering hydroxyapatite to fluorapatite and this in turn makes fluorine able to increase pH. Fluoride can prevent caries by increasing remineralization of the enamel that has just been demineralized by acids produced by plaque bacteria. The aim of this study is to compare the shear bond strength fissure sealant based on glass ionomer between sodium fluoride and APF topical fluor applicationMethod: This research applied true experimental design with post test only control group design. The 21 maxillary permanent premolars were distributed into 3 groups, namely the control group (K1), the treatment group added 5% sodium fluoride (K2), and the treatment group added 1.23% APF (K3). Result: One Way ANOVA and post hoc LSD analysis test displayed no significant difference in each group. This could be due to the material used as a conditioner prior to the GIC application. The addition of fluoride ions will inhibit the demineralization process of the enamel produced by the application of conditioner. So it does not rule out that it will interfere with the attachment of the GIC material used as a fissure sealant in this research.Conclusion: There was no significant difference in shear bond strength of fissure sealant based on glass ionomer between sodium fluoride and acidulated phosphate fluoride topical application.
