Abstract

Oral and dental health among school-age children is often neglected, despite its importance in supporting their quality of life. A Training of Trainer (ToT) program on oral and dental health was conducted for teachers and parents at MI KH Ramly Surabaya to support the vision of Indonesia Free from Dental Caries 2030. This training included educational sessions and guidance on proper tooth-brushing habits using fluoride toothpaste. The results showed an improvement in participants' knowledge, with higher average post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. Additionally, there was a positive behavioral change among children in maintaining oral hygiene. Although statistical tests indicated insignificant results, the intervention had a practical impact on establishing healthy habits. Support from teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals is essential to reducing the prevalence of dental caries in the future. .

Abstract

Background: Indonesia is experiencing a double nutritional problem, undernutrition problem and overnutrition problem.  Excess body weight has an effect on oral health. Underweight individuals have a risk of experiencing hyposalivation and caries. Changes the condition of the oral cavity that occur in the BMI category are related to the rate of saliva flow. BMI is positively correlated with salivary gland size.Method: The type of the research used analytical observational  with a cross sectional approach. BMI is calculated by comparing body weight to height squared. The prevalence of caries is calculated using the decayed, missing, filled-teeth index (def-t or DMF-T). Caries risk assessment is carried out using the CAMBRA method.Result: 22.8% of children with underweight BMI had a caries index of 4.34 and 50% had a high risk of caries. The results of the Spearman correlation test between BMI and the caries index obtained a significance value of 0.046, so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between BMI and the caries index. The results of the correlation test between BMI and caries risk assessment obtained a significance value of 0.070, so it can be concluded that there is no relationship between BMI and caries risk. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between Body Mass Index and  the caries index. There is no significant relationship between Body Mass Index and caries risk assessment using the CAMBRA method in children living in coastal areas

Abstract

Muhammadiyah 9 Elementary School, Surabaya, is geographically located on the coast, so it is often referred to as Bahari Muhammadiyah 9 Elementary School. Based on preliminary survey results, Muhammadiyah 9 Elementary School students frequently consume cariogenic foods, resulting in a high caries index of 4.6. From an educational perspective, the learning method is still relatively conventional and does not align with the "Merdeka Belajar" curriculum, resulting in hampered learning and a lack of student knowledge about maintaining health, especially dental and oral health. Furthermore, the implementation of school dental health activities has not been optimal. Community service methods are carried out through several stages: outreach, training, mentoring and evaluation, and a desire program. The participation of the university community in helping solve the problems facing the community in such environments is essential by providing education and regular dental and oral health checks to reduce the caries index, as well as providing snacks such as sea cucumber jelly candy and anchovy cookies made from seafood, which have anti-cariosis properties. The use of seafood as an alternative to prevent dental caries shows very promising potential. Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat Bima 2025: This program has succeeded in raising student awareness of the importance of maintaining dental hygiene and introducing innovative and natural ways to prevent caries.

Abstract

The aging process is a process of slowly disappearing the ability of tissues to repair themselves or replace and maintain their normal functions. Tooth decay, tooth mobility, caries, halitosis, gingivitis, gingival recession, loss of periodontal attachment, and alveolar bone are changes in periodontal tissue that are commonly found in the elderly. If this is not treated, it can cause mobility and loss of teeth which will interfere with the function and activity of the oral cavity and will have an impact on the quality of life. Dental and oral health problems become one of the problems that have negative implications for overall health that in the end, it affects the quality of life in the elderly. Based on this analysis, in implementing the Tridarma of Higher Education, especially community service, the strategy is to increase public access to dental health services. One form of community service that can be carried out is promotive and preventive efforts. This activity is an educational approach to increase the ability and participation of the elderly community in maintaining dental health which can affect a person's quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Many pregnant women know less about maintaining healthy teeth and mouth. Pregnancy is a physiological process that causes changes in a woman's body physic and psycho. In order to uphold optimal oral health, it is imperative that dental treatment not be withheld. The dental management of pregnant patients necessitates the incorporation of specific considerations. Objective: This research aims to describe the factors which improve dental and oral health services for antenatal care. Materials and Methods: The analysis method used in this systematic review is descriptive. The strategy used to search for articles using PICO and literature search was conducted in June 2022. The data used in this research were tertiary obtained from previous researchers' study results. The source of tertiary data obtained in the article of the journal International Reputable. The literature search in this systematic review uses the following databases: Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Searching articles or journals use keywords and boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT). The evaluation of the systematic review uses the PRISMA checklist to determine whether the studies have been reaching out and are similar to the purpose of a systematic review. The total number of studies was eight articles. Result: Pregnancy should not be considered an absolute reason to defer required dental care. Perceived need, knowledge, awareness, and socioeconomic were identified as factors that could increase visits and dental oral health services for pregnant women. Well-designed studies with reliable outcomes are required to confirm the findings described in this review. Conclusion: promoting dental care during pregnancy requires a multi-faceted approach that involves raising maternal awareness, garnering support from healthcare providers, addressing socioeconomic disparities, and dispelling misconceptions. By integrating oral health into prenatal care and implementing targeted educational programs, healthcare systems can improve dental care utilization among pregnant women, ultimately leading to better maternal and infant oral health outcomes.
