Abstract

This Community Service (PKM) activity was titled "Training on Making Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) from Banana Peel Waste" at MA Yaa Bunayya Jayapura. The main objective of this PKM activity was to raise students' awareness of environmental protection by making liquid organic fertilizer (POC) from banana peel waste. This community service activity used a participatory approach, actively involving students in every stage of the activity. The methods used were training, lectures, Q&A sessions, group discussions, and presentations. A project-based design was used in this activity because it involved the development of specific projects that could help students, teachers, and the school community through waste management. The results of the PKM activity indicated that training on making Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) from banana peel waste can be an effective way to increase students' awareness and skills in environmentally friendly waste management. Thus, this training can benefit students, the school, and the surrounding environment, ensuring a sustainable human life free from banana peel waste. This training also serves as a good example for the community to develop sustainable waste management practices.

Abstract

The cocoa processing industry in Indonesia faces increasing challenges in maintaining production efficiency due to fluctuations in cocoa bean prices, rising operational costs, and stricter product quality requirements. One of the main issues encountered by cocoa processing companies is the occurrence of unplanned machine downtime, extended setup times, and the potential for product defects, all of which directly affect productivity and overall profitability. This study aims to analyze the efficiency of cocoa production machinery utilization at PT. XYZ, an Indonesian cocoa processing company, and to identify the primary sources of inefficiency in order to formulate sustainable improvement recommendations. This research employs a quantitative approach using a case study method. The analysis techniques applied include Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and machine utilization ratios. The study focuses on key production machines, namely the cleaner–winnower, alkalizer roasting machine, fuel end unit, and liquor tank, based on realistic hypothetical data that represent daily operational conditions. The results indicate that the OEE value of the roasting machine reaches 79.28%, consisting of an availability rate of 81.25%, a performance rate of 100%, and a quality rate of 97.44%. This OEE level remains below the industry benchmark of 85%, with unplanned downtime and setup losses identified as the dominant contributors to inefficiency. These findings suggest that implementing preventive maintenance, optimizing setup time through the Single-Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) approach, and enhancing real-time quality control can significantly improve machine productivity and support the long-term profitability of PT. XYZ amid volatile cocoa market conditions.

Abstract

Plastic waste has become a growing environmental challenge for lake communities, particularly in water-based settlements that depend on aquatic ecosystems for their livelihood and tourism activities. This research examines the characteristics of waste and environmental perceptions among the community of Yoboi Village, Lake Sentani, Jayapura Regency, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research explores how plastic waste generated, managed, and perceived within the socio-ecological context of a water-based tourism village. Data were collected through non-participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The result shown that thin plastic packaging, plastic shopping bags, beverage bottles, and food packaging were the most commonly observed types of plastic waste in residential areas and along the lakeshore. Although community members generally demonstrated a good understanding of the environmental impacts of plastic waste, this awareness was not consistently reflected in everyday waste management practices. The persistence of plastic waste was influenced by daily consumption patterns, limited waste management infrastructures, established disposal habits, and the capacity of community institutions to organize collective waste management initiatives. In conclusion, plastic waste management in Yoboi Village should be understood as a socio-ecological issue requiring integrated, community-based strategies that combine environmental education, improved waste management services, and active local participation to protect the sustainability of the Lake Sentani ecosystem.
