Abstract

Student wellbeing has emerged as one of predictors in improving student learning outcome. Studies have reported that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia are parts of student wellbeing constructs that contribute to higher student achievement. However, none of the studies tested the relationships between the three variables and student reading achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine student wellbeing constructs of resilience, sense of belonging, eudaimonia, and the effects on these variables on students’ reading achievement. This study also attempts to provide structural model depicting the interrelationships between students’ wellbeing and student reading achievement. PISA 2018 Indonesia data were used in this study with the total sample of (n = 12,098) 15-year-old students in Indonesia. The data were analyzed by employing structural equation modeling (SEM) technique using IBM SPSS AMOS 26. The findings of this study revealed that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia significantly and directly influenced student reading achievement, and only eudaimonia had a significant negative impact on reading achievement. The study also indicated that sense of belonging is the best predictor of higher student reading performance

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how university students use ChatGPT in academic contexts and how they perceive its influence on critical thinking and independent learning. Using a descriptive survey method, data were collected from 156 university students through a structured questionnaire covering ChatGPT usage frequency, academic purposes, and perceptions related to critical and independent thinking. The findings reveal that 98.1% of students utilize ChatGPT for academic tasks such as research, essay writing, and problem-solving, with most using it either occasionally (55.1%) or weekly (20.5%). Students reported that ChatGPT supports their ability to analyze information and generate ideas, with over half agreeing that it enhances critical thinking. However, a notable portion also expressed concerns about potential overreliance on AI, suggesting it may hinder independent thought and problem-solving skills. Based on these insights, the study recommends integrating AI literacy into higher education curricula to promote mindful, ethical, and strategic use of tools like ChatGPT. This approach can help students balance the benefits of AI with the development of their autonomous academic skills.

Abstract

This study examining language as a complex field of power, rather than merely a neutral means of communication. Every form of language use—whether words, dialects, or accents—contains political, historical, and social connotations that reflect and reinforce power hierarchies. In the era of globalization, the dominance of hegemonic languages such as English, as well as national languages such as Indonesian, has led to the marginalization of minority languages, affecting group identities and shifting cultural landscapes. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the hidden meanings behind language practices and uncovers the power relations involved. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of symbolic power is used to understand language as a form of social capital that has symbolic value in the structure of society. The analysis compares the context of English hegemony globally and in Indonesia, as well as the position of Indonesian and regional languages in the national sphere. The findings highlight the importance of an additive multilingualism approach in language policy to ensure social justice and equitable distributed linguistic capital. Thus, language is posited not merely as a tool of communication but as a crucial instrument of power in social dynamics.

Abstract

The teaching of English For Young Learners (TEYL) in Indonesia has become increasingly prominent in response to globalization and the growing need for English proficiency in academic and professional spheres. Despite this rising demand, the implementation of English education at the early childhood and primary school level encounters significant challenges. These include inconsistent educational policies, a lack of adequately trained teachers, and insufficient teaching and learning resources. This study investigates the current landscape of English language education for young learners in Indonesia by examining national education policies and classroom practices. The research identifies key issues such as the incongruent of a standardized curriculum, minimal pre-service and in-service teacher training specific to TEYL, and disparities in access to quality English instructions and materials between urban and rural schools. Therefore, this current study proposes a strategic roadmap aimed at enhancing the quality and effectiveness of TEYL in Indonesia. These include policy reforms, targeted teacher development programs, curriculum enhancements, and improved resource allocation. The findings are intended to inform policymakers, educational institutions, and practitioners in developing a sustainable roadmap for TEYL in Indonesia.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to explore how English Department students perceive peer assessment as a means to enhance critical thinking in writing. The research involved forty English students who had previous experience with peer assessment in their writing class. Data collection was achieved through a four-point Likert-Scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data analysis using thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings indicated that the majority of students (92.84%) viewed peer assessment positively, as they believed it raised their awareness and consciousness of writing skills. Moreover, 81.89% of students expressed that peer assessment was beneficial in fostering better critical thinking skills, leading them to approach writing more critically. Students generally regarded their peers as capable of providing valuable feedback on their writing, resulting in improved critical thinking due to the reviews they received or provided. However, a small number of students had negative perceptions of peer assessment for improving critical thinking. Their reluctance stemmed from low motivation to actively participate in the peer assessment process and the belief that their friends evaluated their writing unfairly based on personal relationships.
