Abstract

This study aims to investigate Indonesian teachers' perspectives of translation or first language used in ELT classrooms as well as to find out the teachers' strategies on how to incorporate translation as their pedagogical tool. This research is applied in a case study methodology, in which the researcher interviewed three English teachers in Indonesia to explore their perspectives. The raw data was analysed by using thematic analysis to find the emerging themes of the interview data which led to the result of this qualitative research. The result of the finding indicates that the teachers mostly have positive perceptions about TILT (translation in language teaching). Most participants believed that when translation use selectively, it can help students with foreign language learning, promote students' metalinguistic awareness, function as a thinking tool, mediate social interaction, and function as social mediation. Additionally, the strategies of TILT applied by the teachers in this study entail explaining difficult concepts and grammar, avoiding chunks of word translation, and nurturing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is suggested that if translation is integrated into language teaching, it should be used selectively as a pedagogical tool to support students’ learning.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of mind mapping implementation in storytelling to improve students' speaking skills.  This research was framed as an experimental method in which tests and interviews are used to analyze the data. The test consisted of pre-test and post-test, while the structured interview is used to find out students' perspectives toward using mind mapping in storytelling. The finding suggests a significant difference between students' speaking skills in retelling stories using mind mapping and without mind mapping. This difference could be seen from the distribution of the t-score, which is higher than the t-table. T-score is 6. 8, and the t-table is 1.7. The research also suggests that the students considered the mind mapping technique an excellent and effective technique applied in storytelling to improve their speaking performance. Based on the result, the application of the Mind Mapping Technique in storytelling in teaching speaking skills can be one of effective ways to improve the student's speaking performance.

Abstract

The application of the first language (L1) in English language teaching (ELT) has long been practiced, and its practice has been controversial in foreign language teaching. This research aims to investigate students’ attitudes toward the application of Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian students’ L1) in ELT. This research is framed through a quantitative survey in which the 32 participants were invited to take online self-administered questionnaires. Result suggests that the integration of Bahasa Indonesia in English language teaching as a pedagogical tool is considered beneficial to improve students’ English proficiency, enhance English vocabulary, and improve comprehension. In addition, the participants also believed that the numerous use of L1 or Bahasa Indonesia may provide less opportunity for students to develop their speaking skills. When it comes to preferences of language use in ELT, most students agreed that their English teachers should integrate both Bahasa Indonesia and English, in which the use of Bahasa Indonesia to be minimized while English to be predominated.

Abstract

Indonesian or Bahasa (L1) as a learner's first language is often used in English (L2) speaking lessons. This phenomenon often occurs even though teachers have informed them that using Indonesian during English-speaking skills classes is not permissible. Many reasons are suggested by experts why students use this first language. The most prominent reason is the student's lack of understanding of L2. However, this phenomenon still occurs in Public Speaking classes where students are already at the intermediate and advanced levels. In connection with this phenomenon, this study aims to find the main reasons students in the Public Speaking class use Indonesian in their English-speaking skills and what they think about using Indonesian in their English-speaking skills. A total of 50 students in two Public Speaking classes were observed and given questionnaires about their reasons and opinions for using Indonesian in speaking English skills. The results show that the highest reason students use L1 (Indonesian) in Public Speaking class is to process new and complex concepts. They argue that using Indonesian makes it easier for them to explain and understand the new concept.

A good waste management is crucial. However, the public awareness of the waste management is still very low. This fact has led to the behavior of people who are accustomed to throwing garbage in public spaces, such as parks and city squares. One of the most common waste found is food waste. Therefore, this PKM activity was carried out with the aim of providing examples and building awareness of the people of Langsa City not to dispose of food waste in Lapangan Merdeka (Merdeka Square) in Langsa City, especially into the ditch (water flow). The method used is Service Learning (SL) in the form of campaigns and gotong royong (collecting garbage together) by students and lecturers. The campaign and gotong royong were carried out for 9 (nine) days at Lapangan Merdeka in Langsa City, Aceh. The direct result of this activity is Lapangan Merdeka of Langsa City is free from food waste, especially in the ditch. In addition, there was also a change in the behavior of the people who visited Lapangan Merdeka of Langsa City on the eighth day where people were already consciously willing to put their respective food waste into the trash cans / bags provided by the PKM team. The results of this activity, especially changes in community behavior, are very important. However, it still takes many campaigns in the future to make this change be a good habit in the community.

Abstract

Student wellbeing has emerged as one of predictors in improving student learning outcome. Studies have reported that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia are parts of student wellbeing constructs that contribute to higher student achievement. However, none of the studies tested the relationships between the three variables and student reading achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine student wellbeing constructs of resilience, sense of belonging, eudaimonia, and the effects on these variables on students’ reading achievement. This study also attempts to provide structural model depicting the interrelationships between students’ wellbeing and student reading achievement. PISA 2018 Indonesia data were used in this study with the total sample of (n = 12,098) 15-year-old students in Indonesia. The data were analyzed by employing structural equation modeling (SEM) technique using IBM SPSS AMOS 26. The findings of this study revealed that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia significantly and directly influenced student reading achievement, and only eudaimonia had a significant negative impact on reading achievement. The study also indicated that sense of belonging is the best predictor of higher student reading performance

Abstract

With the expanding realm of online education in Indonesia, determining factors influencing university students' participation in distinct modes of virtual learning is crucial to developing more effective digital pedagogy. This research aims to scrutinize factors affecting Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students' low participation in synchronous and asynchronous online learning classes. This research was framed quantitatively by employing a five-rating Likert-scale survey. This survey aimed to illuminate the underlying factors that shape students' behaviors or perceptions within these online learning modes. The findings showed that factors affecting the Indonesian tertiary EFL students' low participation in synchronous virtual learning mode include technical problems, learning anxiety, social isolation, socioeconomic status, and pet and human interferences. Meanwhile, heavy workloads, tedious content, and deprivation of human contact were associated with the factors affecting the EFL students' low participation in asynchronous learning modes.
