Abstract

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a significant healthcare concern, particularly among females. Accurate diagnosis is imperative to prevent complications associated with UTIs. The urinalysis procedure, often referred to as dipstick analysis, serves as a preliminary screening test for the identification of UTIs. This analysis typically examines two parameters: leukocyte esterase and nitrite. However, these parameters exhibit varying degrees of sensitivity and specificity in detecting UTIs. This study aims to ascertain the relationship between leukocyte esterase and nitrite in the urine of patients with UTIs. An observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach was adopted. Samples were randomly selected from a cohort of 50 patients diagnosed with UTIs at Suai Referral Hospital in Covalima, Timor-Leste. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test in SPSS. The results indicated that 80% of UTI patients were leukocyte esterase–positive, while the remaining 20% were negative. Furthermore, 50% were nitrite-positive, and the remaining 50% were negative. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between the presence of leukocyte esterase and nitrite in the urine of UTI patients (p = 0.480; p > 0.05). Consequently, no statistically significant relationship was identified between leukocyte esterase and nitrite levels in the urine of UTI patients. Therefore, urine dipstick examination should be complemented by more precise methods, such as urine culture, to ensure a more accurate diagnosis.

Abstract

Introduction: Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Indonesia is still a serious concern in the world, especially in endemic areas. This disease arises and is transmitted from the Dengue virus through the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which can be suffered from toddlers to adults. If not treated immediately, it can lead to death. The government is promoting a mosquito nest eradication program through the 5M movement (draining, covering, burying, replacing water, and sprinkling larvicide powder) as a key preventive measure in reducing the spread of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that depend on community behavior. Objective: This study aims to find out the picture of community behavior in Mosquito Nest Eradication (5M) as an effort to prevent dengue fever in Banjar Tengkulak Kaja Kauh, the working area of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit of the Sukawati I Health Center. Methods: The research was quantitative descriptive with a simple random sampling technique and involved 175 samples. Data was collected using questionnaires that have been tested for validity and reliability Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents were categorized as having fair behavior, as many as 112 respondents (64%), 53 respondents (30.3%) had good behavior, and 10 respondents (5.7%) had poor behavior. Conclusion: Most of the community's behavior was found to be in a fair category, which shows that although the community's knowledge and attitudes are relatively good, there is still a gap in the implementation of the action, so sustainable programs and social support are needed to increase the active participation of the community in the eradication of mosquito nests.

Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple parameter used to assess a person's nutritional status, whether they are underweight or overweight. Overweight is often associated with the risk of elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia), which can develop into metabolic syndrome. This condition is increasingly found in adolescents and young adults with unhealthy lifestyles. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between BMI and random blood glucose levels (RBG) in regular students of the Diploma III Medical Laboratory Technology program at Wira Medika Bali Health College. This study employed an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 30 students was selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria: aged 15–24 years, not taking medications that affect blood sugar levels, and willing to participate. BMI data were obtained through weight and height measurements, then categorized into underweight, normal weight, overweight, obesity I, and obesity II. RBG examinations were performed using capillary blood with the aid of a glucometer. Analysis of the relationship between variables used the Spearman Rank Test. The results showed that the BMI distribution of respondents was 13.3% underweight, 40.0% normal weight, 13.3% overweight, 23.4% obesity I, and 10.0% obesity II. All respondents had random blood glucose levels <200 mg/dL, thus remaining within the normal range. Statistical testing showed a p-value of 0.996 (p>0.05), concluding that there was no significant relationship between BMI and GDS in students. The conclusion of this study is that BMI has not been proven to be directly related to random blood glucose levels. However, weight control remains necessary as a long-term preventive measure against metabolic syndrome and other non-communicable diseases associated with obesity.

Abstract

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent diseases that requires rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis. Urine examination using dipstick methods serves as a practical diagnostic alternative. However, the stability of urine specimens subjected to delayed examination needs further evaluation, particularly regarding pH and leukocyte parameters. This study aimed to determine the differences in urine pH and leukocyte results between fresh urine and urine stored for 2 hours at room temperature using the dipstick method in UTI patients. This experimental study employed a quantitative approach. A total of 30 urine samples were collected from UTI patients at RSAD Tk. II Udayana. Each sample was analyzed under two conditions: immediately (fresh urine) and after 2 hours of storage at room temperature (delayed urine), yielding a total of 60 measurements. The results showed an increase in the median urine pH from 6.0 to 6.5 and a decrease in leukocyte count from a median of 125 to 70 after 2 hours of storage at room temperature, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that delaying urine examination for 2 hours can affect pH and leukocyte values, potentially leading to inaccurate diagnostic interpretation. Therefore, urine chemical examination should be performed within one hour after collection or stored at 2–8 °C to maintain result accuracy.

Abstract

Prostate cancer remains a leading malignancy among men aged over 50. While Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels are widely used as an initial screening tool, their reliability in predicting histological malignancy grade (Gleason Score) remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between preoperative PSA levels and the degree of malignancy in prostate cancer patients at Pertamina Central Hospital. This observational analytic study employed a cross-sectional design using secondary data from 79 prostate cancer patients admitted between January 2019 and December 2024. PSA levels were analyzed using the ECLIA method, while malignancy grade was determined via histopathological examination using the Gleason Score system, utilizing the Spearman Rank test for bivariate analysis. Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between PSA levels and malignancy grade (p = 0.937; r = 0.009). Notably, a significant proportion of patients with high-grade malignancy (poorly differentiated) did not exhibit proportionally elevated PSA levels. It is concluded that serum PSA levels do not linearly reflect the biological aggressiveness of prostate cancer, potentially due to the loss of PSA-expressing genes in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Consequently, malignancy assessment should not rely solely on PSA levels but must integrate comprehensive clinical and histopathological evaluations to prevent under-diagnosis in aggressive cases.
