Abstract

Air pollution has become a major environmental health concern at both global and national levels due to its significant impact on human health. Exposure to pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, and carbon monoxide (CO) has been associated with increased risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as premature mortality. This study aimed to synthesize scientific evidence on environmental health risks related to air pollution exposure and its impact on human health. An integrative literature review approach was conducted using 12 articles published between 2019 and 2024, retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Data were analyzed descriptively and narratively by examining study objectives, research design, key findings, and implications. The results indicate that most studies reported pollutant levels exceeding recommended standards, with Risk Quotient (RQ) values greater than 1, suggesting significant health risks. Vulnerable populations, including informal workers, urban communities, and industrial workers, were found to have higher exposure levels. Furthermore, a consistent association was identified between air pollution and respiratory diseases such as acute respiratory infections. Overall, air pollution is confirmed as a major environmental health risk, highlighting the need for comprehensive control strategies through environmental policies and public health interventions.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease requiring long-term management and may impose a psychological burden known as diabetes distress. This condition is associated with self-management, treatment adherence, and clinical outcomes. This literature review aimed to synthesize evidence regarding the association of diabetes distress with three primary outcomes: self-management, treatment adherence, and clinical outcomes among people with DM. An integrative review was conducted using 12 research articles published between 2022 and 2024 and retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Articles were screened using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and narratively synthesized according to study design, measured constructs, outcomes, and major findings. The synthesis indicated that higher diabetes distress was generally associated with poorer self-management and lower treatment adherence. Several studies also reported associations with glycemic control and, in specific studies, clinical complications. Interventions such as Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and cognitive behavior therapy were reported to reduce diabetes distress; evidence for improved treatment adherence and HbA1c should be distinguished from evidence for distress reduction. Overall, diabetes distress should be considered in diabetes management, while interpretation should account for study design and limitations of causal evidence.

Abstract

The provision of safe, sustainable, and accessible drinking water remains a major development challenge in archipelagic and semi-arid regions such as East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Geographical constraints, limited water resources, and dispersed population distribution require adaptive governance approaches in the implementation of Drinking Water Supply Systems (SPAM). This study aimed to compare water governance and drinking water management practices implemented by the Regional Drinking Water Company of Kupang City and the Regional Water Utility of Rote Ndao Regency, representing two different geographical contexts within East Nusa Tenggara. A comparative case study approach was employed through field observations, interviews, and document reviews conducted at water sources, treatment facilities, reservoirs, and distribution systems. Data were analyzed descriptively to identify similarities, differences, operational challenges, and development opportunities in drinking water service provision. The findings indicate that the Regional Drinking Water Company of Kupang City operates a more complex system utilizing both surface water and groundwater sources, supported by comprehensive treatment processes including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection before distribution. In contrast, the Regional Water Utility of Rote Ndao mainly relies on spring water and boreholes, with relatively simple distribution systems and limited treatment processes. Nevertheless, the traditional conservation area locally known as "Mamar" surrounding the Oemau Spring contributes significantly to source water sustainability in Rote Ndao. Both utilities face similar challenges related to seasonal water scarcity, increasing water demand, and infrastructure limitations. However, management strategies differ according to local environmental conditions, institutional capacities, and source water characteristics. Strengthening water governance, infrastructure investment, and watershed protection are essential for improving drinking water security in East Nusa Tenggara.
