Abstract

Background: This article analyzes the effects of religiosity, poverty, health, and education on the Islamic Human Development Index (I-HDI) in West Java during 2020-2024, with economic growth positioned as an intervening variable. Method: Using a quantitative descriptive-verificative design, the study employs secondary panel data from 21 regencies/cities over five years, resulting in 105 observations. Fixed Effect Model regression, path analysis, and the Sobel test were processed with EViews 10. Results: Religiosity and poverty have negative significant effects on I-HDI, with coefficients of -0.3421 (p=0.0002) and -0.5123 (p=0.0000). Health, education, and economic growth have positive significant effects, with coefficients of 0.6789, 0.3891, and 0.4123. Economic growth partially mediates health and education but does not mediate religiosity and poverty. The model explains 81.23 percent of I-HDI variation. Conclusion: West Java recovered economically, but maqasid-based human development remained low. In 2024, I-HDI reached 52.72, below conventional HDI of 74.92, indicating the need for moral-security strengthening, spatial poverty reduction, health protection, and education reform.

Abstract

Musnad Ahmad is one of the largest Hadith collections in Islamic scholarship, compiled by Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH). Unlike Hadith works organised by jurisprudential chapters, Musnad Ahmad arranges traditions according to the Companions who narrated them. This distinctive arrangement makes it a significant source for the history of Hadith compilation and an essential reference for classical and contemporary Hadith studies. This study analyses the methods Ahmad ibn Hanbal employed in collecting hadiths, including the historical background of the compilation, sources of transmission, selection criteria, systematic arrangement, and its contribution to Hadith scholarship. Using a qualitative library-research approach, the study relies on Musnad Ahmad as its primary source, complemented by classical and modern works on the Hadith sciences. The findings indicate that Ahmad’s method prioritised the collection of prophetic traditions while safeguarding narrator credibility through the principles of integrity (‘adalah) and precision (dhabt). Consequently, Musnad Ahmad has become one of the most influential Hadith compilations in preserving the prophetic tradition and advancing Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

This study critically examines the hadith methodology employed by Imam al-Tirmidhi in his monumental work, Sunan al-Tirmidhi. The analysis addresses al-Tirmidhi's biography, his socio-cultural milieu, the compilation process of his collection, and the distinctive features of his approach to classifying and evaluating hadith. Employing a qualitative library-research design, the study draws on primary sources—Sunan al-Tirmidhi and al-'Ilal al-Saghir—alongside secondary literature in classical and contemporary hadith scholarship. The findings show that al-Tirmidhi's methodology is distinguished by its integration of hadith criticism with fiqh, its systematic use of critical terminology such as hasan, and its inclusion of scholarly commentary on juristic practice. At the same time, the study identifies notable weaknesses: terminological inconsistency—most visibly in the compound grading hasan sahih—a tendency toward tasahul (leniency) in accepting hadith, and limited depth in isnad criticism. The study concludes that al-Tirmidhi's methodology occupies a moderate position within the discipline of hadith criticism, bridging the authority of transmitted reports with the practical demands of Islamic law

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Imam Malik's hadith methodology in al-Muwatta' and its contribution to the development of hadith studies and Islamic jurisprudence. Al-Muwatta' is one of the earliest works in the history of hadith compilation, integrating prophetic traditions with the practices of the people of Madinah (ahl al-Madinah). This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods based on classical and contemporary sources. The findings reveal that Imam Malik applied a rigorous method of hadith selection, combining chains of transmission, the collective practice of the Madinan community, and the principle of public interest (maslahah). Furthermore, the book functions as both a hadith collection and a legal manual. Imam Malik's contribution lies not only in hadith codification but also in the formulation of a contextual and applicable methodology of Islamic law

Abstract

This paper aims to comprehensively analyze the monumental thought and contributions of Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani (773–852 AH) in the field of hadith science, covering three main domains: musthalah al-hadith (hadith terminology), syarah hadith (hadith commentary), and jarh wa ta'dil (narrator criticism). The method used is qualitative library research, employing descriptive-analytical analysis of primary works such as Fath al-Bari, Nukhbat al-Fikar, and Taqrib al-Tahdzib. The findings show that in musthalah al-hadith, Ibn Hajar successfully systematized hadith classification through a deductive-hierarchical framework in Nukhbat al-Fikar. In the field of commentary, his masterwork Fath al-Bari stands as the culmination of the hadith commentary tradition, integrating multidisciplinary approaches such as history, linguistics, and jurisprudence. In jarh wa ta'dil, his contribution is evident in the standardization of twelve levels (maratib) of narrator evaluation, providing an objective standard for chain-of-transmission criticism. This paper concludes that Ibn Hajar's intellectual dedication cemented his position as Amir al-Mu'minin fi al-Hadits (Commander of the Faithful in Hadith), whose scholarly legacy remains a standard reference in contemporary hadith studies worldwide.

Abstract

Research on ḥadīth criticism has so far concentrated mainly on the authentication of the chain of transmission (isnād), while criticism of the text itself (matn) has not received proportionate scholarly attention. Yet the practice of evaluating the substance of ḥadīth can be traced back to the generation of the Companions through istidrāk al-ṣaḥābī, most notably as practiced by Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah. This study aims to reconstruct the theory of istidrāk al-ṣaḥābī as an epistemological model of ḥadīth matn criticism based on an analysis of al-Zarkashī’s al-Ijābah li-Īrād Mā Istadrakathu ʿĀʾishah ʿalā al-Ṣaḥābah. The study employs a qualitative approach in the form of library research and applies Theory-Building Research as its data-analysis technique. The primary data the text of al-Ijābah were analyzed through the stages of identifying cases of istidrāk, abstracting concepts, classifying critical instruments, and reconstructing theory. The findings show that istidrāk al-ṣaḥābī is a practice of matn criticism possessing a systematic methodological structure. Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah drew on a range of epistemic sources the Qur’an, the Sunnah, historical fact, empirical experience, linguistic analysis, and rational consideration as the basis for evaluating the substance of ḥadīth. On the basis of these findings, the study reconstructs the theory of istidrāk al-ṣaḥābī into three principal components: epistemic sources, critical instruments, and the mechanism of matn validation. This reconstruction demonstrates that matn criticism has been an integral part of ḥadīth methodology since the period of the Companions and broadens the understanding of the epistemology of classical ḥadīth criticism. The study offers a new conceptual model that enriches the development of theory in ḥadīth matn criticism and contributes to contemporary studies of ḥadīth epistemology.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the profiles, characteristics, and narration methodologies of four principal hadith-narrating Companions: Abu Hurairah, Aisyah bint Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Abbas, and Abdullah ibn Umar. In addition, this paper critically evaluates the polemic surrounding the large number of narrations attributed to Abu Hurairah, which has been the target of criticism from contemporary scholars and orientalists. The study employs a qualitative library-research method combining three approaches: critical biography (al-tarjamah al-naqdiyyah), comparative analysis, and argument evaluation (naqd al-hujaj). The findings identify four ideal types of narration methodology: intensive-holistic (Abu Hurairah), selective-critical (Aisyah), interpretive-analytical (Ibn Abbas), and conservative-verificative (Ibn Umar). Regarding the Abu Hurairah polemic, the critics' arguments are found to contain methodological weaknesses in the form of overgeneralization and double standards, while the large volume of Abu Hurairah's narrations has adequate historical explanations rooted in his dedication. The study concludes that the difference in the quantity of narrations among the four figures reflects differences in historical circumstances and methodological choices rather than differences in integrity or faith.
