Abstract

Drawing, sculpture, and photography have evolved from mere artistic expressions into recognized academic disciplines, taught in universities worldwide, and even forming the basis of specialized faculties. Beyond aesthetics, these creative practices have become sources of livelihood and cultural identity in the modern era. However, their development raises profound theological and legal questions within Islamic discourse, particularly concerning the concept of taṣwīr as addressed in hadith and classical juristic thought. This study aims to explore the perspectives of hadith and Islamic scholars on taṣwīr, examining its legal, theological, and ethical dimensions. Employing a library research method, the study systematically analyzes textual sources from canonical hadith collections and the opinions of classical and contemporary scholars. The findings reveal that authentic hadiths contain stern warnings against image-making, primarily due to concerns about idolatry (shirk), imitation of divine creation, and the potential moral corruption (fitnah) associated with representational art. Scholars’ interpretations of these texts, however, vary significantly. Some jurists permit taṣwīr under specific contexts, viewing artistic representation as permissible so long as it does not promote polytheism or moral deviation. Others, predominantly from the Ḥanafī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī schools, adopt a stricter stance, declaring all forms of image-making—whether two-dimensional or three-dimensional—as categorically prohibited, a position even regarded as ijmāʿ (consensus) by al-Nawawī, except for the Mālikī school. In contemporary discourse, this study contributes academically by bridging classical hadith interpretations with modern contexts of visual culture, including photography and digital media.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss some differences between Mahmud Shaltut and Siradjuddin Abbas in interpreting the verses about the death of prophet Isa.  This paper also seeks to investigating of how they interpret, what methods they use, and what factors influence these differences. The results of the study reveal that Mahmud Shaltut interpretes the term of the tawaffa (Q.S Âli ´Imrân [3] verse 55) and tawaffaitanî (Q.S. al-Maidah [5] verse 117) in accordance with the original meaning of  “death”. On the contrary, Siradjuddin Abbas exegetes the term of tawaffa by “grasp”. These differences are because Siradjuddin Abbas uses the method of tafsir bi al-riwayah and consideres them as hadith[s] sahih. On the contrary, Mahmud Shaltut uses the method of  tafsir bi al-ra’yi and does not use such hadith[s]. As a figure of reformer in Egypt, the interpretation of Mahmud Shaltut is affected by Muhammad Abduh’s opinion who refuses the use of Ahad Hadith in belief/akidah discussion while Siradjuddin Abbas, as a traditional Islamic figure in Indonesia, attempts to counter Muhammad Abduh’s opinion because it contradicts to the  understanding of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jamaah that he followed.

Abstract

As a holy book, the Qur'an functions as a law and guideline for the lives of Muslims. In this context, Muslims in modern times often have difficulty in understanding the contents of the Qur'an as a whole. Therefore, experts in interpretation then formulated a method of understanding the Qur'an according to certain themes or what is called the Maudlu'i interpretation method. This article aims to describe the Maudlu'i interpretation, the problems of Maudlu'i interpretation, and examples of Maudlu'i interpretation. This literature review was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study indicate that the Maudlu'i interpretation is an interpretation method that attempts to explain the contents of the Qur'an based on certain themes. The interpretation methods that developed in the 20th century are divided into 3 categories, namely maudlu'i interpretation which focuses on terminology, maudlu'i interpretation which focuses on themes or topics in the Qur'an, and maudlu'i interpretation which focuses on a particular letter in the Qur'an. Regardless of the dynamics of its advantages and disadvantages, Maudlu'i interpretation is more appropriate to the living conditions of modern Muslims. The results of the study concluded that the Maudlu'i interpretation method has an important role in understanding the contents of the Qur'an.

Abstract

Background: Children’s education (tarbiyah al-awlad) in Islam is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Qur’an, emphasizing the development of faith, character, worship, and social responsibility. Qur’anic guidance offers a timeless foundation for nurturing righteous and responsible individuals. Objective: This study aims to examine the thematic interpretation of children's education in the Qur’an, focusing specifically on Surah Luqman (verses 12–19) and Surah An-Nur (verses 58–60), in order to extract educational values and principles. Method: The research adopts a literature review and documentation approach for data collection. Data analysis was conducted through a descriptive-analytical method and thematic interpretation, focusing on identifying key messages and values related to child education in the selected verses. Result: The study reveals that the Qur’anic approach to children's education emphasizes monotheism (tauhid), ethical behavior, obedience to parents, regular worship, moral responsibility, patience, and social etiquette. Luqman's advice to his son in Surah Luqman encapsulates holistic child education, while Surah An-Nur provides guidance on modesty and respect in family interactions. Conclusion: The Qur’an provides comprehensive educational principles that are highly relevant for guiding children’s development in faith, character, and social behavior. These teachings serve as a moral and spiritual framework for nurturing future generations. Contribution: This study offers a foundational reference for the development of child education programs grounded in Qur’anic values, contributing to Islamic pedagogy and curriculum design that is both spiritually and ethically informed.

Abstract

This study is driven by a moral crisis within the contemporary Islamic education system, particularly in the realm of character education, which calls for reconstructing value-based learning rooted in the Qur’an. This condition indicates a reasoning gap in comprehending and implementing character values that align with current global realities. The objective of this research is to analyze M. Quraish Shihab’s interpretation of Surah Ash-Shaffat (verses 102–110), to examine the distinctive style and thematic orientation of Tafsir Al-Misbah, and to identify the embedded values of character education found within these verses. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research, with data collected from primary sources—namely, Tafsir Al-Misbah—and supported by secondary references related to Qur’anic interpretation and Islamic education. The findings reveal three key points: (1) the verses illustrate the exemplary character of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail in their patience, spiritual resilience, and obedience to divine commands; (2) the interpretive model of Tafsir Al-Misbah adopts a socio-cultural and literary approach with an emphasis on the relevance of Qur’anic teachings in daily life; and (3) character values identified include faith, respect, responsibility, compassion, and sincerity. These values are fundamental in constructing a character education framework that reflects Qur’anic principles and addresses the challenges of modern Islamic education.
