COHESION AND COHERENCE IN ADVERTISING DISCOURSE IN THE JAKARTA POST OF OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2018 SESRIYANI, LODYA

This study is aimed at finding out the cohesion and coherence in advertising discourse in The Jakarta Post as well as its implication of the study in teaching reading and writing. The writer used purposive sampling as the method of collecting data. The writer took the data from editions of The Jakarta Post published in October- December 2018. The writer used a cohesion theory suggested by Halliday and Hasan (1976) in analyzing the data. On the contrary in coherence analysis the writer generated Peirce?s semiotic theory of sign (2007) and speech act theory proposed by Austin (1962). Thus, in analyzing the aspect of coherence the writer focused on recognizing and identifying the function of headline as well as the pictures with respect to illocutionary meaning and semiotic meaning. The results of such analysis show that there are three cohesive devices frequently used in the advertising discourse. They are lexical cohesion (51.61%), then reference (25.81%), then substitution (20.97%), and followed by conjunction (4.84%) in which the most presupposed item tends to refer to what is advertised. On the other hand, the headlines and images are both coherent with the idea of the written discourse and speech act meaning as suggested by Austin?s theory. The pictures in the advertising discourse have implication on cultural, social and mythical ideology as suggested by Peirce?s theory of sign. Based on the findings of this research, it can be concluded that the understanding of cohesion and coherence for students will greatly affect the ability of students in reading, interpreting and writing a text. In order to improve the students? proficiency, it is important to introduce variety of texts such as advertising discourse for students especially in University.

AbstractThis research dealt with analysis research. It aims to find out: (1) the errors in using cohesive devices in Essay writing written by students; (2) reasons of their errors; (3) the remedial teaching planned to solve the students? error.This descriptive exploratory study was conducted at the Second Semester of English Department Students of Cultural Sciences Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year 2014/2015. There were 48 students as the sample of this study. They are totally chosen as sample because there are two classes of second semester. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher used descriptive analysis as follows: (1) the researcher classified the error after the collecting the data; (2) the researcher identified the type of cohesive devices errors of all students? essay; (3) the researcher found the causes of errors. There are some research findings: (1) The students make errors in using reference and conjunction; (2) The cause of their error is intralingua error; (3) The remedial teaching is needed by the students. In this case, the researcher suggests to use project based learning.The result of this study implies that the Second Semester English Department Students of Cultures Sciences Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year 2014 /2015 have weaknesses in cohesive devices especially in reference cohesion, the most dominant error is misformation. However, the most dominant error in conjunction is misordering. At last, the teacher needs to apply remedial teaching to solve the students? error in using cohesive devices, the teacher should use the appropriate activities in writing class. ABSTRACTPada revolusi industry 4.0, pendidikan tidak dapat lagi dipisahkan dari teknologi. Teknologi mempengaruhi semua aspek yang ada pada pendidikan termasuk peserta didik. Teknologi mempengaruhi bagaimana mereka melihat, mendengar, berbicara dan berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana penggunaan instagram pada matakuliah Bahasa Inggris Program Studi Pendidikan Ekonomi Universitas Pamulang. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 1 yang sedang mengambil matakuliah Bahasa Inggris. Total responden adalah 19 orang mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan interview yang bersifat terbuka, sehingga responden dapat menjawab pertanyaan wawancara dengan jelas dan lengkap sesuai dengan porsinya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mendapatkan manfaat yang sangat besar ketika belajar speaking menggunakan akun instagram mereka. Sebagian besar dari mereka menyatakan bahawa; (1) mahasiswa merasa percaya diri dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, (2) Mahasiswa lebih focus pada penggunaan grammar yang benar ketika berbicara, (3) Mahasiswa lebih mudah untuk mengoreksi postingan temannya, (4) negative komen yang diberikan oleh temannya memotivasi mahasiswa untuk berbicara lebih jelas dan lancar.Kata Kunci : Bahasa Inggris, Instagram, Speaking

KESULITAN YANG DIHADAPI MAHASISWA PENDIDIKAN EKONOMI DALAM MENYELESAIKAN READING SECTION PADA TOEFL SESRIYANI, LODYA

ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan soal pada reading section pada TOEFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan design penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dalam upaya untuk mencari tahu kesulitan apa saja yang dihadapi mahasiswa didalam TOEFL khususnya pada reading section. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Pendidikan Ekonomi yang mengikuti tes TOEFL pada tanggal 25 Oktober 2019, total subjek adalah 30 mahasiswa. Didalam mengumpulkan data penelitian, peneliti menggunakan soal tes TOEFL yang mengadopsi soal TOEFL dari buku Deborah Philips. Peneliti melakukan analisa secara langsung dari jawaban benar dan jawaban salah mahasiswa pada soal tes tersebut, setelah itu peneliti mengkorfirmasi kesulitan mahasiswa dengan cara melakukan wawancara terhadap mahasiswa yang memiliki jawaban salah dan benar pada soal- soal tertentu untuk mengetahui penyebab kesulitan yang mereka hadapi. Hasil analisis menemukan bahwa mahasiswa menemukan beberapa kesulitan didalam menyelesaikan soal TOEFL pada reading section. Kesulitan tersebut antara lain; (1) Mahasiswa tidak mempunyai cukup kosa kata dalam Bahasa Inggris, (2) mahasiswa merasa mengantuk saat membaca wacana yang panjang, (3) mahasiswa kesulitan mencari ide pokok dalam teks bacaan, (4) mahasiswa kesulitan menemukan informasi yang disampaikan pada teks bacaan.

This PkM aims to socialize digital literacy as an effort to provide an understanding of the digital world that is directly related to learning used in online learning. Since the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, almost all lines of life have changed. Slowly but surely, people must begin to get used to this situation, including the education. In online learning, teachers face various challenges that come from both teachers and students. The most perceived challenge by teachers is to motivate students in learning. This PkM was conducted by 5 lecturers and involved 5 students who were running a field practice program at SMP PGRI 363 Pondok Petir. This activity lasts for 3 days on November 9-11, 2021. This activity begins with observing the needs of teachers in terms of teaching and learning activities in the classroom. After making observations, it was found that teachers and students need a variety of activities that can reduce boredom when learning online. The activity was continued by socializing material about the importance of digital literacy to access information, then the next day the teacher was given the opportunity to develop various activities that involve student activities in digital learning.

This PkM aims to provide training to teachers at SMPN 20 Dumai Dumai. SMPN 20 Dumai is an example of formal education. The school, which is located on Jalan Raya Tiangjong, has problems related to the learning process, namely the use of appropriate media according to the material and needs of students. In addition, the challenge that teachers feel the most is motivating students in learning. Video media is believed to be able to increase student motivation in learning. This is the background for this PkM activity, PkM will be conducted by 3 lecturers and involve 3 students. This activity will last for 3 days on March 20-22 2023. This activity will begin by observing the teacher's needs in providing learning materials. After making observations it was found that most of the teachers used simple activities in providing learning materials. ABTRAKPkM ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pendampingan bagi guru mata Pelajaran di SMPN 20 Dumai mengenai pengembangan modul ajar pada kurikulum merdeka. Dumai Modul ajar kurikulum merdeka merupakan pengganti dari RPP yang berformat dan bersifat variatif yang meliputi materi/ konten pembelajaran, metode pembelajaran, interpretasi, dan teknik mengevaluasi yang disusun secara sistematis dan memukau untuk mencapai indikator keberhasilan yang diharapkan. PkM dilakukan oleh 3 orang dosen dan melibatkan 3 orang mahasiswa. Kegiatan ini selama 3 hari pada tanggal 9-11 Oktober 2023. Kegiatan ini dimulai dengan melakukan observasi mengenai kebutuhan guru dalam pengembangan modul ajar. Setelah melakukan observasi ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar guru belum paham muatan isi pada kurikulum merdeka. Kegiatan dilanjutkan dengan melakukan pelatihan bagaimana mengembangkan modul ajar pada kurikulum merdeka di SMPN 20 Dumai.Kata kunci: Pendidikan formal, Modul ajar, Kurikulum merdeka

This PkM is an implementation of research previously conducted by the PkM team entitled Factors that influence teacher performance. There are many factors that can be used to improve teacher performance, one important factor is a teacher's communication skills. The communication in question is the communication process carried out by teachers and students in the classroom. Teachers are not only required to communicate well, but also use correct grammar so that there are no multiple interpretations by students. These communication skills are included in eight teacher teaching skills, namely skills to open lessons, skills to close lessons, explanation skills, skills to provide variations, skills to provide reinforcement, skills to manage the class, skills to guide small group discussions, skills to manage the class and skills to teach small groups and problems. Communication skills are very necessary, especially for schools that use multilingual teaching and learning activities. One of the schools that uses multilingual school instruction is the Sekolah Indonesia Malaysia Kuala Lumpur. This school uses three languages of instruction, namely Malay, Indonesian and English. This community service is needed to provide a new perspective to teachers at Indonesian schools in Kuala Lumpur that the use of language should be as simple as possible but the learning objectives that have been set can be achieved.
