Abstract

Marine and fishery development is closely related to coastal development since the majority of the development actors in the fishery and marine sectors are coastal communities. Economic capacity development of an area is an attempt to realize sustainable coastal development. This study aims to elaborate to what extend the community economic capacity development and how the development policies of the government are in supporting the community economic capacity development. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods (a mixed method). The qualitative method employs data collection techniques in the form of observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussion (FGD). The quantitative method applies data collection techniques of structured interviews and a survey technique. Supported by local development policies that have been formulated in the mid-term and long-term development plans, the community-based economic capacity development in the coastal areas of Serang City aims at improving the economic prosperity of the coastal community as well as improving coastal area management. At large, the economic capacity development consists of (1) improvement of human resource capacity, (2) enhancement of economic competitiveness and (3) improvement of economic facilities/infrastructures as the support. The conomic capacity improvement involves full participation of communities and stakeholders who mutually interact, collaborate, and cooperate to enhance each capacity and together they encourage coastal economic improvement.

Abstract

Abstract

Increasing of fishing pressure poses a serious threat to the sustainability of blue swimminng crab resources. Trap design modifications are needed to improve size selectivity and to release under size crabs. This study aimed to determine the type of wall modification of collapsible trap that is effective in excluding under size blue swimming crab. Laboratory observations were conducted using four escape vents treatments and three different mesh sizes. The escape gap used are rectangular, square, circular and oval respectively. Moreover, the mesh sizes used are 2.0 inches, 2.5 inches and 3.0 inches. Descriptive analysis and scoring were used to determine the most effective type of wall trap modification to be used in the blue swimming crab fishing. The results showed that the rectangular escape gap has better effectiveness than other shapes with the percentage of crabs that pass through at 86.7%. The wall modification using a 3.0-inch mesh size had better performance than the other modification types with a total score of 19. Collapsible trap with a 3.0-inch mesh wall was able to escape 86.7% of the crabs with an escape time of only 11.2 seconds and an average escaped crab carapace width of 78 mm. Keywords: Collapsible trap, escape gap, environmentaly-frendly fisheries, mesh size of trap wall

Abstract

Blue swimming crab is one of the capture fisheries sector leading commodities in Banten Bay which is caught using gill nets and collapsible traps. The risk of lost fishing gears during operation is very high, both due to the bad weather and interactions with other fishing gear. The Abandoned, Lost or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) contributes significantly to the abundance of marine plactics in the world which has a negative impact on the sustainability of fish resources, water quality and endangers the safety of navigation. Nevertheless, there have been no mitigation activities and efforts to reduce ALDFG in the Banten Bay. This study aims to identify the global causes of lost fishing gear derived from blue swimming crab fisheries in Banten Bay. Data were collected around the Archipelagic Fishing Port (PPN) of Karangantu in May-June 2022. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 respondents who were selected purposively and the results were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that generally, the causes of lost gear were conflicts with other fishing gear which constitute 64%, whilst human errors during fishing operations and bad weather contributed 19% and 17%, respectively. Keywords: ALDFG, conflict, blue swimming crab, lost gear.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical skills of freshwater fish farmers in Purwasari Village, Dramaga District, Bogor Regency, in producing independent fish feed using locally available ingredients. The program was implemented by the Forum Wacana IPB University team in collaboration with a feed expert from Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The activities consisted of counseling, technical training, and mentoring using a participatory learning approach, allowing participants to be actively involved in every stage of the program. Evaluation through pretest and posttest demonstrated a significant improvement, with an average knowledge increase of 38.1%, particularly in technical understanding and group institutional capacity. Participants showed strong enthusiasm and commitment to continue producing independent feed collectively to reduce production costs and improve business efficiency. The program effectively strengthened farmers’ economic independence and supported the national policy on sustainable fish feed self-sufficiency.
