Abstract

Although commonly understood that diary writing benefits language learners in many ways, the use of diary writing as a medium for reflective practice in higher education is still rarely considered. The study aimed to portray the student's reflective practice through diary writing - to display how the student made meaning of her daily life and learning experiences. Employing qualitative case study, we observed one of our students reflective practice through her diary entries. Our study employed Rodgers summary of Deweys reflective practice (2019) as the theoretical framework. The data of this research was a handwritten diary of a student named Lana containing 30 diary entries written from September 6, 2018, to October 22, 2018. The entries were written in the period when she joined a Creative Writing class. The diary writing activity was mainly aimed to help the students in the class to build their writing habits by writing reflections of their daily activities. The result showed that diary writing provided room for Lana to carry out the reflective practice. This practice helped her to see and to understand herself as a learner. Also, Lana specifically expressed that diary writing helped her to have ideas for writing easily. Based on the findings, we argue that in the Indonesian higher education context diary writing needs to be incorporated in the learning process to benefit learners in their personal development and their language learning process.

Abstract

This article is part of bigger study aiming to investigate Junior High School English teachers’ perceptions of continuing professional development (CPD) and its scheme implementation through self-development, publication and innovation. This article highlights the implementation of CPD through publication. The study employed qualitative method The data was first obtained from the questionnaire distributed to 13 English teachers. The result of the data was presented in simple percentage. Later, to get deeper understanding 7 English teachers were selected conveniently out of the 13 teachers to be interviewed. Data analysis of CPD implementation of the teachers is used as the evidence of the practice. The findings showed that English teachers in this study had positive perceptions towards CPD scheme implementation through publication. In practice, however, only few teachers wrote or published their works. This condition was caused by the limited time of the teachers to write, the lack of training on writing and other responsibilities besides teaching they had to bear. To help teachers publish their works, assistant in the form of training by experts is needed. Teachers’ active participation in teachers’ forums helping them to write should also be encouraged.

Abstract

This study aims to portray how students reflect their learning process in a creative writing course through their poems. Forty-seven students of an English Literature Department in a private university in Semarang participated in this study. The course mainly covered the short story and poetry writing. Poetry writing was started in the second half of the semester. In this study, the students were required to write a learning reflection to look back at the process they had been through. Employing Hanauer’s meaningful literacy concept (2012), the researchers analyzed how students reflected their learning process in their poems. It is argued that language learning should enable students to use language in a way that is more meaningful and relevant to their personal experiences. In terms of reflection, it is believed that by deliberately looking back at their learning process students can objectively evaluate, understand and make sense of their journey. This study found four major themes in the students’ reflective poems namely altered perspective, students’ struggle, increased self-assurance, and students’ future expectations. In conclusion, language learning should embrace meaningful literacy in which students should be allowed to deliver their personal and meaningful expressions, in this case by writing poetry.

Abstract

Empirical studies revealed the EFL students’ writing problems, such as incomplete paragraph development and conjugation accuracy. These problems affected the overall text coherence.  These problems have inspired teacher researchers to investigate alternative instructional techniques to improve the flow of ideas and conjugation accuracy of EFL students' paragraphs. This current research aims to investigate mood and paragraph structure analysis effectiveness to develop the conjugation accuracy and flow of ideas fluency in EFL students' paragraphs. This study followed an experimental design utilizing control and experimental groups. The research subjects comprised 30 2nd-year undergraduate EFL learners who were at an intermediate level of English proficiency. Data for this research were collected using multiple methods, including tests, documentation, and interviews. The research results revealed that mood analysis and paragraph-structure analysis were effective techniques for improving the conjugation accuracy and idea flow fluency of EFL students' writing. Thus, it is recommended that mood and paragraph structure analyses be alternative techniques to teach paragraph writing.

One of the places for community-based Islamic Religious Education (PAI) is through the Quran Education Park (TPQ). Not all TPQs implement qualified and modern learning methods and media according to the needs of today's education to realize the goals of PAI. The purpose of this service is to realize the goals of PAI at TPQ Raudahtul 'Ulum with conventional-based learning assistance and training methods with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital. Abstract

Female English teachers make significant contributions to their field, yet stories about them are under-researched. This paper presents the framework of an ongoing narrative inquiry aimed at understanding female teachers’ agency and its role in their professional identity construction during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on a systematic review of relevant research, the framework displays several key themes, including the significance of active learning and digital literacies, and the scarcity of narrative inquiries into female teachers. We thus argue that in order to gain insights into post-pandemic pedagogy, there is a need for studies that depict female English teachers’ agency in enacting their pedagogical competencies and showcase their continuous efforts in constructing their professional identities, despite the challenges that they face. Against the backdrop of our review, the teacher education curriculum must include course(s) on agency and identity construction.

Abstract

For academicians, publishing in international journals means engaging in a border-crossing activity, as they disseminate their research findings globally. People from various countries with different cultures and norms read research papers. However, academic writing is problematic for non-native English-speaking students (NNES), as prospective academics. This review paper aims to identify the challenges that NNES face in writing research article introductions (RAIs), including rhetorical structures, tense choice, tense shift, clausal and phrasal complexity, and the benefits of using translanguaging techniques in academic writing classes. Thematic analysis was employed in this library study. The research procedure involves selecting relevant research articles on the topic, reading each article, taking notes on the key findings, integrating and discussing the findings from the reviewed articles, and designing translanguaging techniques to teach academic writing to NNES. The article review reveals that NNES face challenges in writing complete rhetorical structures, particularly in tense choice and tense shift, because in academic writing, tense usage is not only governed by time but also by the rhetorical concept. It also reveals that translanguaging techniques facilitate the students’ awareness of the native language and target language academic writing rules and conventions. Translanguaging techniques enhance students’ analysis skills, critical reading, and critical thinking.
