Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that negatively affects individuals' cognitive, emotional, and social functioning, often resulting in a diminished quality of life. While pharmacological interventions remain the primary treatment, complementary spiritual therapies have gained interest for their holistic benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Gayatri mantra spiritual treatment on the quality of life among patients with schizophrenia. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used, involving 22 participants selected through purposive sampling at a provincial mental hospital in Bali. Participants received daily Gayatri mantra sessions for three consecutive weeks. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument was used to assess outcomes, and data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings showed a significant improvement in quality of life following the intervention. This study highlights the potential value of integrating spiritual practices into nursing care as a complementary therapeutic strategy to support mental health recovery and enhance overall patient well-being.

Abstract

Mental health problems in adolescence are often associated with sleep disorders that affect academic performance and daily functioning. This study aims to describe the mental health status and sleep quality of adolescents in a public junior high school in Bali, Indonesia. The study used a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional design. A sample of 178 seventh-grade students was selected using stratified random sampling. Mental health status was measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, while sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that most adolescents had a mental health status in the normal category, although a significant proportion were found in the borderline and abnormal categories. More than half of the respondents reported good sleep quality, while the rest experienced suboptimal sleep quality. These findings indicate that although the general condition of adolescents is relatively good, there are still at-risk groups that require special attention through early screening and school-based promotive and preventive interventions.

Abstract

Mental disorders are health issues that have a far-reaching impact on individuals, families, and communities. The successful recovery of people with mental disorders is greatly influenced by the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of the community in which they live. Stigma and discriminatory treatment that still occur can hinder the process of rehabilitation and social reintegration. This study employs a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The study subjects are residents of Banjar Dajan Rurung, Batubulan Kangin Village, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected via a questionnaire assessing the community’s knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward people with mental disorders, and were subsequently analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that the majority of the community possesses adequate to good levels of knowledge regarding mental disorders. Community attitudes generally fall into the “adequate” category and are generally positive, although negative attitudes were still observed among some respondents. Regarding behavior, the majority of the community has demonstrated sufficiently supportive behavior; however, tendencies toward avoidance and stigma persist in social interactions with people with mental disorders. These findings suggest that increased knowledge has not yet been fully reflected in optimal changes in attitudes and behaviour. Therefore, ongoing education and outreach are essential for community nursing practice, education, and services to increase public acceptance and support the recovery and social reintegration of people with mental disorders.

Abstract

Adolescence is a sensitive developmental period in which emotional regulation, peer relationships, and self-identity are still forming, while social media has become an increasingly familiar part of daily life. Understanding how social media use appears alongside adolescents’ mental health is important for school-based health promotion and early psychosocial support. This study aimed to describe social media use and mental health status among adolescents at SMP Negeri 1 Abiansemal. A quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted among 178 seventh-grade students selected through stratified random sampling. Social media use was measured using a researcher-developed questionnaire, while adolescent mental health status was assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions, percentages, and cross-tabulation. The findings showed that most respondents were frequent social media users. Mental health profiles varied across domains, with most adolescents categorized as borderline in the prosocial behavior or strengths domain, normal in the difficulties domain, and normal in general mental health status. Frequent social media use was observed across different mental health categories, indicating a varied psychosocial profile rather than a single uniform pattern. These findings provide baseline information for nurses, teachers, and school health professionals in developing early screening, healthy social media education, and preventive mental health programs for adolescents.
