Abstract

This study explores the potential of scaffolding-based temporary architectural design within the framework of sustainable architecture. Traditionally utilized as a temporary structural element to facilitate construction processes, scaffolding has increasingly evolved into a central component in spatial formation across diverse design contexts. Employing a qualitative case study methodology with research about design approach, this research examines architectural typologies in Indonesia that utilize scaffolding as a fundamental element. The selected case studies span various project scales, encompassing both private and public functions and ranging from small to medium-sized developments. The primary aim of this study is to demonstrate how temporary structural elements can be reimagined as core components in spatial formation, presenting possibilities across various architectural applications. The reflections derived from this investigation are articulated as concepts and ideas that showcase how the temporality of architecture and structural elements can enhance sustainability in design. This study underscores the attributes of flexibility, adaptability, efficiency, and temporality in spaces and buildings formed through scaffolding-based designs. The findings reveal that innovative and creative applications of temporary structural elements as spatial formers hold considerable potential to advance sustainability in architectural discourse. The multifunctionality of such elements paves the way for more exploratory and unconventional design approaches. Additionally, this research highlights that scaffolding, when applied as a primary architectural element, can align with sustainability principles by enabling the creation of efficient, temporary spaces that are both adaptable and flexible. As a result, this study provides valuable insights for practitioners and academics seeking to develop innovative and sustainable approaches in architectural design

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the transformation of roofs from merely providing shelter to becoming active thematic spaces in cafe architecture. This study responds to the phenomenon of uniquely designed cafes, which leverage various spatial aspects, including roofs, to enhance the outdoor spatial experience. Roofs are no longer just protective coverings against the weather, but have the potential to be reimagined as imaginative, explorative active spaces. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach based on case studies in Indonesia within a tropical context to illustrate the diverse roles and functions of roofs. The analysis is conducted by identifying the configuration of roofs as active spaces. The primary objective is to uncover how the application of roofs as active spaces involves various responsive design operations and strategies. The findings of this study highlight three key aspects of the new role of roofs: extended functionality, creative configurations, and functional construction. It is hoped that these insights will inspire cafe architectural designs to explore various other architectural aspects, beyond the traditionally understood limitations of roof functions.

Abstract

This study presents a perspective where architecture can also designed as a model of archival representation in a historical urban space. It uses qualitative research-by-design and reflective architectural design methods, to consider Tunjungan Street's heritage as an exhibition space for contextual case for sustainable urban conservation through architectural thinking. The study identifies three principles: Movement as Program captures spatial movement to support walkability and more efficient use of resources; Heritage as Identity is about cultural character; and Urban Context as Sequence relates to social and ecological sustainability. Together, the principles structure design strategies that enable a reinterpretation of historical meaning-formally, in a material way—which represented progress for urban heritage interpretation through the lens of architectural programming. The study associated urban and sustainable growth to heritage design thinking through adaptive reuse, resilient heritage and socially engaged public places, making the case for the transformation of heritage design thinking as a model for the future. The study suggested a design-based model that positioned architectural programming as a strategic action for sustainable urban archiving, utilizing appropriation of exhibition strategies, and spatial sequencing as interpretations of the heritage of Tunjungan Street.

Abstract

This study aims to map the characteristics and potential uses of digital virtual media as extensions of spatial architecture within the context of tourism. Beyond serving as mere representations, this study argues that digital virtual media function as a transformation of spatial architecture. The concept of multi‑spatiality emphasizes the inseparable relationship between physical and digital architecture. In the context of tourism, architectural objects such as museums are experiential spatial designs that can be further expanded through digital virtual media. This qualitative study uses the Aceh Tsunami Museum as a case study. Through observation, various media‑based modes of representing this architectural object were identified. This study focuses on mapping the characteristics of each media-based spatial model. The findings from this characterization are synthesized into three main concepts: multi-access, multi-user, and multi-time, which together represent an extension of the architectural experience itself. This study positions architecture not only as a physical structure but also as an evolving spatial entity, extending beyond mere duplication to encompass diverse digital and virtual dimensions.

Abstract

This paper reimagines architectural landmarks within the hills of Labuan Bajo, proposing an approach where architecture seamlessly integrates with the landscape rather than asserting dominance. The study examines how design strategies can amplify rather than overshadow the natural environment, positioning nature as the true landmark through ephemeral architecture. Using Plowright’s force-based framework within an architectural competition, the research employs a research-by-design methodology to iteratively refine solutions that dissolve built interventions into the terrain. By integrating Labuan Bajo’s topographical and visual characteristics, the design leverages adaptive modularity and sustainable strategies to ensure perceptual fluidity within the site’s ecological and cultural context. This approach contributes to landmark design by demonstrating how architecture can function as a dynamic extension of the landscape, fostering harmony rather than visual competition.

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the concept of minimalism as a design method and philosophy, far beyond the mere minimalist visual appearance commonly understood. This understanding responds to the trends in home design in Indonesia, where minimalism is often perceived as a design that emphasizes visual simplicity. However, the greatest potential of minimalism in modern architecture lies in the effort to simplify spatial design processes and methods with a reductive approach. This qualitative case study highlights the design of a simple residential house using the reduction approach. The connection between reduction and minimalism is reflected in various architectural design aspects, including reduction in building capacity, materiality, and design identity. The findings of this study propose the concept of reduction as a method closely related to various efficiency efforts. The ultimate goal is to expand the understanding of minimalism not merely as an aesthetic but as a reduction-based approach towards various aspects of sustainability in design.

Abstract

This paper examines the idea of modularity as an extensive framework within the participatory design approach. Modularity is explored not only as a design and construction method but also as a collaboration framework that allows architecture to evolve through collaboration. In exploring the idea, this paper elaborates modularity through a community service design project at Alun-Alun Cemara Miagan, an open space in Miagan Mojoagung, Indonesia, emphasizing a participatory approach that involved local stakeholders and architects in developing a multifunctional public space. Due to the phased funding from the government, the project adopted modular strategies to enable flexible, incremental development aligned with community input. Three modular prototypes were developed: a gate responding to budget and fabrication constraints; a canopy providing adaptable shaded areas; and a building offering spatial flexibility for public functions. Through collaborative ideation in the participatory process, the hands-on engagement and iterative refinement from the community directly informed these design outcomes. This study demonstrates that modularity also supported local industries and addressed funding rhythms, demonstrating its value in both technical and social dimensions. The study also concludes that modular design can foster resilient, adaptable, and resource-efficient public spaces. It contributes to the discourse on community-based architecture and suggests future exploration of digital tools to enhance participatory modular development.
