Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ speaking skills in the English Department at UIN Datokarama Palu that could be developed through group discussion techniques. It was designed as collaborative classroom action research and divided into two cycles. Data came from class observation, field notes, a questionnaire, and a speaking test over six meetings of speaking lessons on the second term of the semester. The research included 22 students. The researcher identified the students’ speaking skill development based on the criteria of success established. The findings showed that 11 students (50%) acquired it, and 11 students (50%) fizzled in the first cycle. The researcher continued to the next cycle since the students’ speaking achievement did not meet the criteria of success yet. Some improvements were made in order to cover the drawbacks in the first cycle, such as rearranging the members of the group and emphasizing teaching on the use of 'opened-ended questions’. There were 18 students (81.8%) who acquired it, and just 4 students (18.2%) fizzled in the second cycle. Besides, all students felt challenged to participate in group discussions. However, their participation varied greatly among the individual students. An interesting implication of this research was that students’ speaking skills could be developed through group discussion techniques.

Abstract

Through the Opinion Expressions Method, this study seeks to improve students' speaking skill in the context of Islamic higher education. It was separated into two cycles and planned as a cooperative classroom action research project. Data were gathered throughout six speaking lesson meetings during the second semester's term from class observations, field notes, questionnaires, and speaking tests. 24 students participated in the study. Based on the specified success criteria, the researchers determined how well the students were developing their speaking skill. According to the results, 11 students (48%) failed the first cycle while 13 students (54%) successfully completed it. The researchers carried on to the following cycle because the students’ speaking skill had not yet met the standards for success. Some changes were made to address the shortcomings in the First cycle, including: requiring more direction in structuring sentences by posing and responding to questions based on the callings in the photos provided in groups; encouraging students to be active in group work; emphasizing the importance of having fair distribution of work among the participants; and explaining that the direction-giving process should be improved. In the second cycle, 19 students (79%) successfully gained it, while just 5 students (21%) failed. Finally, a fascinating implication of this research was that the Opinion Expressions Method may be used to improve students' speaking skill.

Before the intervention, students struggled with understanding recount texts. However, after the experimental group received treatment using the scanning technique, their performance improved significantly, as evidenced by an increase in their average scores from 45.33 in the pre-test to 76.94 in the post-test. These findings indicated that the scanning technique was an effective method for enhancing reading comprehension of recount texts in this context.

Abstract

This study explored the dual role of code-switching in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, examining whether it functioned more as a tool to support comprehension or as a hindrance to fluency development. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research involved three English teachers and ten intermediate-level students in a bilingual educational context. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and were analysed thematically. Findings revealed that when used strategically and sparingly, code-switching served as an effective pedagogical scaffold, enhancing comprehension, reducing learners’ anxiety, and fostering confidence—particularly among lower-proficiency students. Teachers reported that occasional use of the students’ first language (L1) maintained lesson flow and facilitated understanding of complex material. However, excessive reliance on code-switching was found to limit students’ opportunities to practice English, foster dependency on L1, and impede the development of fluency and communicative competence. These findings underscored the need for a balanced and principled approach to code-switching, where teachers used L1 judiciously to support learning while progressively increasing English use to promote fluency. The study contributed to the ongoing debate on the pedagogical value of code-switching, highlighting its potential as a flexible instructional strategy when applied thoughtfully within learners’ sociocultural and linguistic contexts.
