Abstract

Rejang Inyeng  is a sacred dance preserved in Tiyingan Village, Petang District, Badung Regency. Performed by young girls before menstruation during the Purnama Kapat and Purnama Kedasa ceremonies, the dance functions as a ritual to welcome deities. However, its continuity faces challenges due to limited academic documentation and a hiatus during the pandemic. This study aims to represent the symbolic meaning of Rejang Inyeng  through documentary film as a cultural preservation strategy. The research employed a qualitative approach by combining Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics, visual ethnography, and the Save the Cat narrative model. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, literature studies, and documentation, while information tracing was guided by the concept of Catur Guru and the Glass Box method. Analysis was conducted by linking signifiers, such as dance movements and performers, with signifieds such as purity, sanctity, and cultural regeneration, further deepened through the concept of Dasa Aksara. The findings indicate that the documentary effectively represents the symbolism of Rejang Inyeng  in a communicative way, serving not only as a visual archive but also as an educational and cultural transmission medium. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Saussurean semiotics with Dasa Aksara, the application of Catur Guru in data exploration, and the adaptation of Save the Cat within a sacred documentary.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of spatial layout in relation to visitor circulation comfort at the HOMEDEC 2024 Exhibition, held in Hall 3A of the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD, Jakarta, from October 3rd to 6th, 2024. The background of this study is rooted in the importance of spatial arrangement to support smooth visitor flow and enhance the overall visitor experience during large-scale exhibition events. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method, using data collection techniques such as direct observation, expert interviews, documentation, and the distribution of questionnaires to exhibition visitors. The analysis focuses on aspects including circulation path width, movement patterns, booth placement, zoning, and wayfinding within the exhibition space. The findings indicate that the spatial layout, designed using a combination of grid and radial patterns, successfully facilitated a relatively smooth flow of movement. However, several congestion points were identified, particularly in the prize giveaway area, the main stage area, and at the intersections of major circulation paths. Supporting factors that contributed to visitor comfort at the HOMEDEC exhibition included adequate main path widths, good lighting, and strategic booth placement. Nevertheless, limited boundary signage and high density in certain zones emerged as key constraints. This study recommends improvements in zone organization, widening of pathways in high-traffic areas, and the addition of directional signage to further enhance visitor circulation comfort in future exhibitions.

Abstract

This article examines the petulangan in Balinese cremation ritual (ngaben) as a material articulation of power, knowledge, and social distinction. Moving beyond symbolic-descriptive interpretations of ritual architecture, the study positions the petulangan as a performative field in which cosmology, hierarchy, and aesthetic production converge. Employing a qualitative interpretive methodology grounded in visual ethnography and discourse analysis, fieldwork was conducted in Gianyar, Bali, involving observation, visual documentation, and interviews with undagi (traditional architects), priests, and customary leaders. The analysis integrates the theoretical frameworks of Michel Foucault’s power–knowledge nexus and Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, habitus, and symbolic capital. From a Foucauldian perspective, the regulation of iconography, proportion, and ritual procedure constitutes a regime of aesthetic orthodoxy through which cosmological truth is stabilized and spiritual legitimacy is disciplined. The petulangan operates as a ritual technology that renders authority visible and socially binding. Through Bourdieu’s lens, cremation aesthetics are understood as a visual economy of distinction, wherein economic, cultural, and social capital are converted into symbolic capital. Monumentality, ornamentation, and artisanal refinement function as strategies of prestige, reproducing social hierarchy through sacred art. The study argues that the petulangan is not merely an ephemeral funerary structure but an active agent in the materialization of cultural politics. Although contemporary economic transformation and commercialization reshape patterns of patronage, the symbolic grammar of hierarchy and cosmological authority remains resilient. Ultimately, Balinese funerary architecture demonstrates how sacred aesthetics simultaneously honour the deceased and reproduce the social order of the living.

Abstract

The architecture of the palinggih ‘Balinese shrine’ is generally built based on the design of a sacred Hindu building according to the guidelines of traditional Balinese architecture, but different from the two architectural forms of shrines in Nusa Penida, Bali. This study focuses on the transformation of the belief system of Nusa Penida’s local coastal community belief system, which is realized into ulam agung (king of fish) and pedau (traditional sailboat) sacred buildings. The results of the study show that the transformation of the metaphor architectural shrine occurs because of the mastery, placement, and conversion of cultural, social, symbolic, and economic capital, that crosses individual and collective habitus in the realm of the Nusa Penida local coastal community belief system. The system of people’s belief in local gods undergoes a process of osmosis into gods in the pantheon of Hinduism. The socio-religious practice is also influenced by their level of knowledge, reasoning, and experience of the architectural form of the shrine as a symbolic Hindu religious building.

Abstract

Ethnoecology is the most recent approach to reveal the complexity of the relationship between belief systems (cosmos), knowledge/cognitive systems (corpus) and praxis (sosio-cultural practices) of local communities which can also be understood as local wisdom. The social phenomena and eco-cultural practices of the people in the Buyan Lake area also show this, so they are appropriately explained on the basis of ethnoecological theory. This qualitative study with descriptive interpretative was carried out for six months (May to October 2023) at the Buyan Lake Area locus. The results of the study show that the people in the Buyan Lake Area really respect the gods who are the rulers of nature who protect the environment of the Buyan Lake Area through the cosmos system, both regarding the mystical belief system revealed in the mythology of the forbidden wood, the gombang-rakrik dragons, the duwe animal, the yellow and the iron soan (springs and channels). Likewise, those who are glorified in the aspect of ruling deities in the Hindu pantheon such as Dewi Danu (lakes gods), Dewi Gangga (river gods), Dewi Gayatri (springs gods), Dewa Vishnu (water gods) and Dewa Sangkara (forest gods). The corpus system concerns their knowledge of the capabilities/availability and utilization of various water resources of Lake Buyan. These two ethnoecological systems form perceptions and underlie practical actions in the form of behavioural adaptations for the conservation of the Buyan Lake Area. The sustainable availability of plant resources around Lake Buyan and its fisheries is also part of its use for periodic rituals (ceremonial means).

Abstract

This study examines the ethnoecology of fishing communities in the conservation of Lake Buyan, with an analytical focus on the cosmos system, Corvus and daily praxis. This study uses aqualitative descriptive analytical method with a basis for data analysis based on cultural ecologytheory and generative structuralism. Fisherman behaviour data was obtained from distributingquestionnaires using analysis referring to the binary model. This study, which was conducted inMay - August 2023, found that the cosmos system or belief in a divine nature and strong magicalmystical beliefs collaborate to form and strengthen cultural capital, social capital and symbolic capital as one unit with rational and irrational knowledge forming a complex system. Corvus. This conception complements the individual and collective habitus of fishing communities throughconventions as values, norms and rules that are adhered to physically and mentally. The localwisdom of the fishing community underlies every daily practice. Both in understanding andutilizing Lake Buyan in its functions as a source of drinking water, agriculture, socio-cultural/religious, economic, recreation or tourism, and ecology. This praxis is also reflected in the resultsof fishermen's behaviour which is included in the good category with a score of 1.
