Abstract

Empirically visualizing the text being read into pictures, diagrams, or images evidently deepens students’ reading comprehension. Given the evidence of its significance, this study aims to figure out the effect of visualizing the text upon the students’ reading comprehension observed from their cognitive learning styles namely field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI). Due to its purpose, the experimental study, quasy-experimental research to be specific, was carried out. Fifty four fifth-semester students at Universitas Negeri Malang participated in this study. The findings were shockingly contradictory with the empirical evidence provided in previous studies. It is revealed that visualization strategy was proven to be significantly ineffective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension on account for some factors. However, the mean score of FI students in experimental group was slightly above FD students.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period of transition from children to adults. Transitional status often makes adolescent students confused in determining which choices are right for themselves. In fact, they need to know themselves better, their potential and what they like and dislike, and to make plans for their future. Therefore, to avoid confusion in their selves, self-identity is needed. The purpose of this study is to describe aspects of self-identity of adolescent students at SMA Negeri 4 Padang. The data were collected through a self-identity questionnaire given to a total of 33 students. This study used purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed quantitatively and described comprehensively. This study found that the mean score of adolescent students’ self-identity was 133.52 or 72.07% of the ideal score. In addition, 9.09% students had very high self-identity; 36.36% students had high self-identity; 24.24 students had moderate self-identity; 30.30 students had low self-identity; and none had very low self-identity. The development of self-identity of adolescent students must continue to be improved in order to support the development of their learning.

Abstract

Being an archipelagic country is a plus factor for Indonesia in various fields, including the economic field. One of the important qualities to support the development of maritime potential in Indonesia is the ability of English for the related fields (ESP). This study aims to find out the learning materials needed by students of the Department of Naval Architecture so that they acquire English skills that are relevant to their academic and work fields. This study will further develop teaching material in the form of problem-based learning (PBL) module. This study was a descriptive qualitative study using questionnaires and interviews for data collection. The respondents of this study were 50 students and 2 lecturers from the Department of Naval Architecture, Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis. This study found that the students of the Naval Architecture Department had the skills of listening, reading, speaking, writing, and pronunciation at the intermediate level. The skills really needed by the students of the Naval Architecture Department were listening and pronunciation. The topics needed by the students were Safety of Life at the Sea (SOLAS), Biro Klasisifikasi Indonesia (BKI), and English for job seekers. In addition, the PBL method is suitable and can be used in English classes for the Department of Naval Architecture.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of the English for Naval Architecture module based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students' English proficiency in the context of naval architecture. The need for a specialized English module in this field arises from the specific language requirements faced by students in technical disciplines such as naval architecture. The research aims to assess how PBL-based instruction impacts students’ language skills, particularly in their ability to understand and apply technical English in real-world naval engineering scenarios. A pre-experimental with one group pretest - posttest research design was utilized. The data were collected through test to seek for the module’s effectiveness meanwhile questionnaires were employed to gather students’ feedback. The study involved 17 naval architecture students who used the PBL-based module over a semester. The effectiveness of the module was evaluated using N-Gain analysis, which revealed a moderate improvement in students' English proficiency with a score of 0.46. Additionally, student feedback indicated positive responses regarding the module’s structure, relevance, and its influence on skill development, especially in problem-solving, technical English usage, and critical thinking. While the improvement in English proficiency was moderate, the PBL approach significantly enhanced students’ ability to apply language skills in professional and technical contexts. Students also appreciated the module’s alignment with their field of study, and its real-world problem-solving activities engaged their interest. In conclusion, the English for Naval Architecture PBL module is an effective tool for teaching English in technical fields, offering a valuable model for future curriculum development in similar disciplines.

Abstract

A considerable number of studies have shed light on the benefits of ER to English language learning in L2 context. However, there has been no study examining the natural process of how pleasure reading naturally builds up language proficiency. Therefore, this study is intended to divulge the obscure process of how ones unconsciously build up English proficiency by doing pleasure reading. The participants in this study are two non-English learners who have done pleasure reading for, at least, 7 years with no purpose of learning English. Nested in a narrative inquiry methodology, this study examined the participants’ personal stories on the problems they tackle in doing pleasure reading, the gradual process they have been through, their motivation which makes them eager to read, and their unintentionally built up English proficiency. The data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, observation and personal communication. The evidence showed that both participants underwent the language acquisition process in which they were not clued up about the subconscious awareness of language system obtained when reading. They got delectation of reading and achieved language proficiency simultaneously. Conclusively, extensive reading works on improving language proficiency of not only language learners who intentionally read for learning but also those who read only for pleasure. HIGHLIGHTS: The participants underwent the language acquisition process in which they were notclued up about the subconscious awareness of language system obtained when reading. The participants got delectation of reading and simultaneously achieved proficiency invocabulary, reading and listening skills, and grammar. Pleasure reading worked on improving language proficiency of the participants who read for pleasure.

Abstract

Being an archipelagic country is an added value in various fields for Indonesia. One way to develop archipelagic potential in Indonesia is to improve the quality of human resources in related fields, one of which is naval architecture. A quality that is no less important is the ability to speak English. This study aimed to design a teaching material in the form of module of English for naval architecture using problem-based learning in order to expose students to real world problems. This research employed Research and Development (R&D) using ADDIE design. The phases of this model were analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This research was conducted in Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis and involved 50 students of Naval Architecture department. The research subjects were involved in defining the topic needs for the module, implementing the module and evaluating the module. The topic of the module is the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) topic. There are some parts of the module: the first part of the module is module identity; the second part is module component; the third part is module material; and the last part is evaluation. In the evaluation part, problem-based learning is used. This module is expected to contribute to the improvement of naval architecture students’ ability in English and further prepare them for their future work and career.
