Abstract

This research aims to develop a textbook for the Basic Reading subject by using multimodality and oriented to character education. This research is research and development, which refers to the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation). Subjects of this research are students and lecturers who have taken part in the Basic Reading subject at English Education Department STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Data collection techniques used are document analysis, questionnaire, interview, and expert judgments. The results of need analysis show that the textbook used in Basic Reading subject has not oriented to character education and used multimodality yet. The development of Basic Reading has been validated by education experts and practitioners (lecturers). Based on the validation of experts and practitioners, this textbook is included in the very well category and confirmed as the feasibility to use. The trial results in implementing the book show that the N-Gain calculation shows 0.43, which is categorized as moderate, which means the book improves students’ cognitive learning outcomes in the reading subject and also instills core ethical values in daily living. Thus, this textbook is feasible to be used in the learning process at Basic Reading Subject.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa eksistensi dari nilai pendidikan karakter pada buku teks yang digunakan pada mata kuliah Reading di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dimana data pada penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan wawancara. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah dosen yang telah dan mengajar pada mata kuliah Reading dan mahasiswa yang telah mengikuti mata kuliah tersebut. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah buku teks yang digunakan pada mata kuliah Reading di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Berdasarkan hasil interview diketahui bahwa buku teks yang digunakan tersebut belum mengandung nilai pendidikan karakter yang harus dipelajari dan dibutuhkan oleh mahasiswa. Buku teks tersebut hanya mengandung sembilan nilai pendidikan karakter dari 18 nilai yang terdapat pada Permendikbud tersebut. Nilai karakter yang terdapat dalam buku teks Reading adalah religius, jujur, kreatif, mandiri, kerja keras, rasa ingin tahu, gemar membaca, peduli sosial dan tanggung jawab. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa buku reading yang telah digunakan di jurusan bahasa Inggris di Sumatera Barat belum sepenuhnya mengandung nilai pendidikan karakter. Kata kunci: Pendidikan karakter, buku teks reading, analisa kebutuhan Abstract The aim of this research is to analyze the existence of character education which is included in the textbook used in Reading subject at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. This research is qualitative research which the data were collected through interview. Subject of this research is the lecturers who have taught Reading subject and the students who have complied that subject. The object of this research is the textbook used in Reading subject at STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Based on interview results, it is known that the textbook used in Reading subject does not have character education contents which is needed and learnt by the college students. The textbook used only have nine out of eighteen characters mentioned in Permendikbud No49Tahun2014. They are, religius, honest, creative, independent, hardwork, curiosity, fond of reading, social care and responsible. It can be concluded that the reading textbook used at English Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat has not indicated the use of characters educational values yet. Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris yang mengintegrasikan antara kebutuhan hardskills dan kebutuhan softskills. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kebutuhan karakter apa saja yang perlu dikembangkan dalam bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa kelas V SD. Penelitian ini merupakan deskriptif kualitatif dengan partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah guru dan siswa kelas V di salah satu Sekolah Dasar swasta di Kota Pariaman. Instrumen dalam penelitian adalah angket dan pedoman wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa memerlukan karakter percaya diri, bekerja keras, dan kreatif, sedangkan kebutuhan karakter yang perlu dikembangkan dari segi guru adalah karakter percaya diri, tanggung jawab, dan bekerja keras. Dengan demikian baik guru maupun siswa memerlukan sebuah bahan ajar yang dapat mendukung pendidikan karakter yang dapat menanamkan nilai seperti sikap percaya diri, tanggung jawab,kreatif, dan senang bekerja keras

Abstract

This study aimed to identify medical students’ problems in following English online learning on the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used qualitative descriptive research using a survey design. The participants of this research were 183 medical students of Baiturahmah University who taking English subject. Data was collected through questionnaires that spread by using Google Forms. The data were analyzed quantitatively. The results of the study showed that the medical students had problems in English online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The problems faced were the networks, the limited quota, the environment, the motivation, and the comprehension of materials. It is hoped that the institutions, the lecturers, and the students find the solution in creating effective, conducive, and valuable learning.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an English teaching material using the Total Physical Response (TPR) learning model and oriented to character education. The Research and Development (RnD) is employed in this study which referred to the Plomp model of development which consisted of four stages. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, validity tests, and effectiveness. Subjects of the research were fifth-grade students of SDIT Mutiara Pariaman City and English teachers. Data analyzed were carried out quantitatively and qualitatively. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The validity test showed that the developed product can be employed in the classroom by expert judgments with an average score of 86%. The result in implementing the product showed the product is effectively improving students’ English ability and their ethical values in the learning process. Thus, the English teaching material using the Total Physical Response (TPR) learning model and oriented into character education is feasible and effective to be used in the fifth grade of elementary school.

Abstract

This major aim of this study is to seek for better understanding of students’ perceptions towards using social media for learning English. This study also attempts to identify the most frequently used social media in English learning. The participants of this study were 78 students of State Polytechnic of Bengkalis who had used social media as English learning medium. The data were collected through questionnaire distributed by using google forms. The results of this study showed that the students had positive attitudes towards the utilization of social media for learning English. The finding of the study also revealed that the most frequent social media used for learning English is YouTube and WhatsApp as the most frequent media used for general purposes. It can be concluded that using social media in English learning has positive impact for students.

Abstract

Adverb clauses of time is oen of gramatical rules which is quite difficult to be mastered. This research aimed to describe students’ ability in using adverb clauses of time for past, present and future time at State University of Padang. This research is descriptive research where the population is third year students’ of English Department in State University of Padang. There are 30 students as the samples which are chosen by using cluster sampling. The instrument of this research is test which consist two types of test; multiple choice and fill in the blank with total number are 75 items. The result shows that students’ ability in using adverb clauses of time is categorized average generally where 50% of the students are able to use adverb clauses of time correctly. Specifically, students’ ability in using adverb of time refers to past time is categorized good with percentage is 74% while students’ ability in using adverb clauses of time refers to present time is categorized low since only 50% students answered correctly. Thus, percentage of students’ ability in using adverb clauses of time refers to future time is categorized low because only 47% students are able to answer the test correctly. In conclusion, students’ ability in using adverb clauses of time is average however, it is suggested to the lecturers to provide more practice about adverb clauses of time.

Abstract

Nonverbal communication is one of the communication types which are done in teaching and learning process. This research aims to analyze nonverbal communication types done by teachers in English teaching and learning process in SMP Negeri 10 Padang. It is a descriptive research in which the participants are two English teachers which taught at VII Grade SMP Negeri 10 Padang. The data were collected through observation checklist and field note and were analyzed by using Schmitz’s (2012) nonverbal communication theory. The result of the research shown that teacher at VII Grade SMP Negeri 10 Padang used nonverbal communication types such as Kinesics; using movement, Vocalics;  using voice and intonation, and Proxemics; using distance, however, the teachers did not use Haptics, using touch, in English teaching and learning process. In conclusion, English teachers at VII Grade SMP Negeri 10 Padang had used nonverbal communication types and applied them in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Literature is considered as a promoting tool for language learning purposes.  Literature can be used to foster students motivation to read and write in order to achieve their academic proficiency. Poetry as a part of literature has affirmed that literature has a great deal in developed students’ literacy competence. This paper argues for the use of literature and some approaches in teaching and learning literature especially poetry in EFL classroom. This paper also elaborates some benefits of using literature and poetry in the EFL classroom and proposes some assessments which can be used to assess students’ literary competence in poetry.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi karena masih rendahnya tingkat kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII MTsS Darul Ulum Yapa Kombang Baru Tapus di Pasaman Timur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penggunaan strategi Inside-Outside Circle terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VIII MTsS Darul Ulum Yapa Kombang Baru Tapus di Pasaman Timur. Desain dari penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen dimana satu kelas diberikan perlakuan dengan menggunakan strategi Inside-Outside Circle dan kelas lainnya menggunakan strategi Group Work. Data pada penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes berbicara yang dinilai berdasarkan rubrik penilaian speaking oleh Brown. Hasil kemampuan berbicara siswa dianalisa dengan menggunakan t-test untuk mengetahui keefektifan strategi Inside-Outside Circle terhadap kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi Inside-Outside Circle dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VIII MTsS Darul Ulum Yapa Kombang Baru Tapus di Pasaman Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan t-hitung = 2,39 lebih besar dari t-tabel = 1,68 dalam tingkat taraf 0,05. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi Inside-Outside Circle dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII MTsS Darul Ulum Yapa Kombang Baru Tapus di Pasaman Timur
