Abstract

This research employs a sociological approach to literature, drawing on Georg Simmel's social interaction theory and Karl Marx's class struggle concepts, to analyze the dynamics between the upper-class Crosses and the lower-class Noughts in the novel Noughts & Crosses. The study identifies five forms and six types of social interactions, encompassing superordination and subordination, exchange, conflict, prostitution, and sociability, along with character-based classifications such as the miser, the spendthrift, the stranger, the adventurer, the nobility, and the poor. The central focus lies in understanding the struggles of the Noughts in their pursuit of social equality within a deeply divided society. Despite collective and individual efforts, fueled by class consciousness and the formation of the Liberation Militia, the research concludes that achieving equality remains elusive. The powerful Crosses, driven by hidden manipulations and a desire to maintain the existing system, thwart the Noughts' endeavors, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by the lower class in a society marked by reverse racism.

Abstract

Superhero is considered as an ideal figure with the image of hegemonic masculinity men. Hegemonic masculinity men are categorized as heterosexual, strong, intelligent, and dominant men. Meanwhile, homosexual men are subordinate masculinity. Perry Moore’s novel Hero presents the figure of a gay superhero. This study will explain how a gay superhero character named Thom was able to transcend the domination of hegemonic masculinity which has been synonymous with the image of a superhero. The method used is descriptive-analysis. The data taken is in the form of quotations in the novel Hero. The data that has been collected will be analyzed using the hegemonic masculinity theory popularized by R.W. Connell. The results of this study indicate that Thom is categorized as subordinate masculinity because of his sexual orientation as well as his weak, and insecure nature. As a gay superhero, Thom faces several conflicts in academics, family, and neighbourhood. However, he showed that he could change the perceptions of people. Through this novel, Perry Moore tried to dismantle superhero stereotypes.

Abstract

The portrayal of female villains in media and movies has evolved significantly, as evidenced through the lens of Stuart Hall's representation theory and film analysis concepts. Traditionally confined to one-dimensional roles perpetuating gender stereotypes, contemporary cinema showcases multi-dimensional characters like those in Cruella, challenging societal norms and defying traditional gender expectations. By employing narrative and non-narrative film analysis techniques, these characters are revealed as agents of subversion and empowerment, embodying a new archetype of female villains characterized by individual agency and autonomy. However, despite this progress, the lingering impact of gender stereotypes persists, influencing how female villains are depicted on screen. Thus, ongoing critical analysis and advocacy for more diverse and authentic representations of women in media remain crucial.

Abstract

The passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is expected to reduce the injustices faced by African Americans. However, life after the Act proves to be not easy. The issues of oppression experienced by African Americans in the past continue to recur. This is because some discrimination against black people is done in a more latent way, called modern discrimination. Therefore, it is important to discuss modern discrimination against African Americans as depicted in Judas and the Black Messiah movie This article aims to analyze the causes of modern discrimination against African Americans. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method through library research. The main data was taken from the dialogue of Judas and the Black Messiah movie, while supporting data came from articles, books, and online sources. The researcher applied a post-nationalist perspective, Critical Race Theory, and modern discrimination theory. The research findings identify four key factors explaining modern discrimination against African Americans: normalization of discrimination, exploitation of minority interests to support white dominance, adaptation of African-American stereotypes to fit white demands, and the intersectionality of multiple sources contributing to discrimination.

Abstract

This research examines the discrimination traits experienced by three female characters in the Bridgerton series. This research uses the symbolic annihilation concept by Gaye Tuchman and the theory of existentialist feminism by Simone de Beauvoir to describe the discriminatory traits experienced by the three female characters and reveal their resistance efforts to respond to the discrimination. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods to elaborate the findings and the theories. This research finds that women's existence in this series is presented as the party who gets trivialization, omission, and condemnation. Despite being subjected to annihilation traits, the three female characters in this series do not remain silent and accept what has been set by their family and society. Thus, these three female characters take the resistance by staying true to themselves and standing firm in their convictions. The symbolic annihilation they experienced then used as a reference to prove herself that as a woman they can still exist even though being discriminated against by society.

Abstract

Abortion is a complex issue. On the one hand, abortion is an illegal act according to positive law and is prohibited by religion in Indonesia. On the other hand, abortion is a shortcut to solving unwanted pregnancies by married and unmarried couples. This study aims to see how the media frames news about illegal abortion, how positive law regulates this act and what the triggers doing illegal abortion. This research is qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The results of the study show that the media tends to be neutral by not taking sides between the perpetrators and the victims. This research also reveals the fact that the high demand of the Indonesian people for an illegal abortion service is at least triggered by two things, the legal system, and social norms applied in Indonesia. The legal system prohibiting abortion in Indonesia is incapable to prevent and provide a deterrent effect against perpetrators of abortion criminalization. In addition, Indonesian society’s system of social norms is very sensitive to immoral cases, such as pregnancy out of wedlock. As a result, many pregnant women who are out of wedlock choose to hide their pregnancies and then secretly carry out illegal abortions
