Abstract

This article aims to analyze the dynamics of Islamization in the coastal areas of the Malacca Strait by emphasizing the role of maritime trade routes, Muslim scholars (ulama), Islamic political institutions, and cultural acculturation in shaping Malay Islamic identity. This study employs a qualitative approach based on library research by critically examining academic books, reputable national and international journal articles, and scholarly documents published within the last ten years (2015–2025). Data analysis was conducted using historical-critical analysis and content analysis to identify patterns, key actors, and driving factors in the Islamization process. The findings indicate that Islamization in the coastal regions of the Malacca Strait occurred peacefully, gradually, and contextually through trade interactions, scholarly networks, and the institutionalization of Islam within Islamic sultanates. Islam functioned not only as a belief system but also as an ethical, legal, and cultural foundation that was integrated with local customs. This process resulted in a distinctive form of Malay Islam characterized by moderation, inclusivity, and adaptability to social change. This article recommends strengthening coastal-based Islamization studies as an important reference for the development of Islamic history, Nusantara Islam studies, and contextual Islamic education in Southeast Asia

Abstract

This article examines Shaykh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari (1710–1812) as a key intellectual actor in the formation of normative Islam in eighteenth-century Nusantara. Departing from previous studies that tend to approach him through biographical and locally bounded perspectives, this study situates Shaykh Arsyad within the framework of the Haramain–Nusantara scholarly network, the production of religious authority, and the transregional transmission of Islamic knowledge across the Malay world (Banjar–Mecca–Riau). Employing an intellectual history approach and critical literature review of primary and secondary sources, this article demonstrates that Shaykh Arsyad was not merely a local jurist but a significant agent in the standardization of religious practices through his legal work Sabilal Muhtadin, theological purification, the strengthening of Islamic education, and his contributions to the Qur’anic scholarly tradition in Nusantara. Through discursive mechanisms based on texts and scholarly networks, Shaykh Arsyad’s influence extended beyond Banjar without requiring physical mobility. These findings highlight his role as a transregional ulama who bridged classical Islamic scholarship with the socio-cultural context of the Malay world, contributing to the development of a moderate and enduring Islamic orthodoxy in Nusantara

Abstract

Coastal communities represent maritime societies with distinctive sociological and religious characteristics shaped by dependence on the sea, environmental uncertainty, and continuous interaction with external cultures. These conditions necessitate adaptive and contextual models of Islamic da'wah and education. This article aims to analyze cultural da'wah practices and the adaptation of Islamic education within the maritime culture of Indonesian coastal communities. Employing a qualitative approach through library research with a socio-anthropological perspective, this study examines ethnographic literature, sociology of religion studies, and previous research on coastal societies. The findings indicate that da'wah in coastal areas develops in a cultural-transformative form, utilizing maritime symbols, local language, and traditional practices as media for internalizing Islamic values. Meanwhile, Islamic education in coastal communities tends to be flexible, occurring not only within formal institutions but also integrated into social spaces such as suraus, docks, and fishing activities. This study argues that the effectiveness of Islamic da'wah and education in coastal societies is largely determined by the ability to negotiate normative Islamic teachings with local maritime wisdom. This article contributes to the discourse on maritime-based Islamic da'wah and education, an area that remains underexplored in Indonesian Islamic education studies

Abstract

This study analyzes the transborder intellectual network established by Sheikh Ahmad Khatib al-Minangkabawi (1860–1916) within the framework of interaction between the Malacca Strait region and the center of Islamic scholarship in Mecca. The Strait of Malacca is viewed as a dynamic civilizational zone that facilitated the movement of religious leaders, students, and Islamic discourse between the Malay world and the center of religious authority in the Haramain. Within this network, Sheikh Ahmad Khatib played a vital role as a figure from the Nusantara who held high scholarly legitimacy in Mecca while simultaneously serving as a bridge for the transmission of knowledge to the Malay world. Utilizing a qualitative method through literature review and a historical-intellectual approach, this research gathered data from ancient manuscripts, historical documents, the works of Sheikh Ahmad Khatib, and other relevant literature. The data analysis process was carried out through a series of stages, from heuristics to historiographical writing, to map the established intellectual relationships. The research findings indicate that this network was formed through the halaqah system, the granting of ijazah (scholarly licenses), and the distribution of written works involving interactions between teachers and students from various parts of the Nusantara. The impact of this network not only strengthened the relationship between the Malacca Strait and Mecca but also contributed significantly to the Islamic scholarly tradition in the coastal Malay region. This study affirms that such transnational connections constitute a vital foundation in the trajectory of intellectual history and the development of Islam in the Malay world

Abstract

The integration between Islamic values and Malay customs represents a distinctive characteristic of the social and cultural life of the Malay community that has evolved historically and continuously. Islam is not merely understood as a belief system but also as a source of values shaping customary structures, social norms, and community behavior. This study aims to examine the forms of integration of Islamic values within Malay customs and their role in constructing cultural identity and social order. The article employs a qualitative approach using library research methods, applying descriptive analysis to classical and contemporary literature, including works of Malay scholars, customary manuscripts, and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that the integration of Islamic values and Malay customs is reflected in the principle “adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendi Kitabullah,” which serves as the fundamental foundation of Malay social life. Islamic values such as justice, deliberation, politeness, trustworthiness, and social responsibility are internalized in various aspects of customary practices, including family life, leadership systems, and conflict resolution mechanisms. This integration occurs harmoniously and complementarily, ensuring that Malay customs remain aligned with Islamic teachings. The study concludes that the integration of Islamic values and Malay customs plays a significant role in maintaining social harmony, strengthening cultural identity, and serving as a model for the synergy between religion and local culture in multicultural societies

Abstract

This study examines the strategic position of Syekh Burhanuddin Ulakan within the intellectual landscape of Islam in the Malay World, focusing on the scholarly connectivity between Minangkabau and Aceh during the seventeenth century. The research employs a qualitative library research approach by analyzing relevant primary and secondary sources concerning his biography, knowledge transmission, and the institutionalization of Islamic teachings on the western coast of Sumatra. Data were analyzed through data reduction, historical interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Syekh Burhanuddin Ulakan was not merely a local preacher but also a key intellectual link connecting Minangkabau Islamic traditions with regional and global scholarly networks through his educational relationship with Syekh Abdurrauf al-Singkili. The study further demonstrates that the Shattariyah Order functioned as a cultural bridge that integrated Islamic law with local customs through an adaptive process of vernacularization. Moreover, the surau educational system played a significant role in institutionalizing Islamic values and strengthening transregional scholarly networks. The study concludes that the cross-strait intellectual network established by Syekh Burhanuddin contributed to the formation of an inclusive, moderate, and culturally rooted Islamic tradition in Minangkabau. The implications of this research suggest that integrating local wisdom with transregional Islamic scholarly networks can serve as an effective model for strengthening religious moderation, Islamic education, and cultural resilience in contemporary Indonesian society

Abstract

The coast of the Malacca Strait has historically been an intellectual corridor that brought together various Islamic schools of thought in the archipelago and surrounding areas. Raja Ali Haji, with his phenomenal work Gurindam Dua Belas, formulated Islamic etiquette that harmonized the worldly and spiritual dimensions. This study aims to examine the relevance of these ethics to the contemporary character-building program “Seven Habits of Great Indonesian Children” (Wake Up Early, Worship, Exercise, Eat Healthy, Love Learning, Socialize, and Sleep Early). Using qualitative methods with a literature review and content analysis approach, this study found a strong synchronization of values between 19th-century coastal Islamic thought and the character needs of children in the contemporary era. The results of the study show that each point in the Seven Habits has a philosophical basis in the articles of the Twelve Gurindam, especially in terms of strengthening faith, self-control, and social responsibility. The conclusion of the study emphasizes that the integration of local Malay Islamic wisdom into the national character education system is essential in order to shape a generation that excels in physical and intellectual performance while maintaining a depth of ethics and monotheistic faith

Abstract

This article examines the theological thought of Nuruddin al-Raniri as reflected in Islamic manuscripts circulating in the coastal regions of Aceh during the seventeenth century. The study focuses on the relationship between theological ideas, manuscript culture, and the socio-religious context of Acehnese coastal society. Existing studies have largely emphasized al-Raniri’s theological polemics or printed texts, while the role of manuscripts as a medium for the formation and legitimation of theological thought remains underexplored. This research employs a qualitative approach using manuscript-based library research. Primary sources consist of Islamic manuscripts containing al-Raniri’s theological works, complemented by secondary sources in the form of scholarly books and journal articles. Data analysis is conducted through content analysis and historical-contextual analysis to interpret al-Raniri’s theological ideas in relation to the social and religious dynamics of seventeenth-century Aceh. The findings indicate that al-Raniri’s theological thought was primarily oriented toward reinforcing Sunni Ash‘arite theology as a normative framework for religious life. Through the circulation and reproduction of Islamic manuscripts, these theological ideas were disseminated and institutionalized, gaining social legitimacy. Al-Raniri’s critique of wujudiyah was not merely a doctrinal debate but functioned as a means of establishing theological orthodoxy and maintaining religious stability within a cosmopolitan coastal society. This study concludes that Islamic manuscripts played a strategic role in the institutionalization of al-Raniri’s theological thought. By situating theology within manuscript culture and its social context, this article contributes to a more contextual, historical, and integrative understanding of Islamic theology in the Nusantara

Abstract

This study examines the role of Nuruddin al-Raniri within the transregional scholarly networks of Malay ulama across the Malacca Strait during the seventeenth century. Previous studies have primarily focused on textual analyses and theological debates surrounding al-Raniri’s thought, while limited attention has been paid to his position within broader scholarly networks. This research aims to analyze al-Raniri’s role as an intellectual actor in Malay Islamic scholarly networks and to explore how these networks shaped the production of knowledge and religious authority in the Aceh Sultanate. Employing a qualitative approach with library research methods, the study utilizes al-Raniri’s works as primary sources and academic books and journal articles as secondary sources. Data were analyzed through content analysis and a contextual historical approach. The findings reveal that al-Raniri functioned as a key node within scholarly networks connecting Aceh with Muslim India and the Middle East. These networks served not only as channels for the transmission of knowledge but also as arenas for intellectual contestation and the formation of religious authority. The study concludes that Malay Islam developed as a cosmopolitan and dynamic intellectual tradition that formed an integral part of global Islamic civilization. The implications of this study highlight the significance of scholarly network analysis in understanding the development of Malay Islam and demonstrate the active contribution of Malay ulama to the production, dissemination, and transformation of Islamic knowledge within the broader Muslim world

Abstract

This study aims to examine the maritime riverine local wisdom embedded in the traditional Malay Islamic education curriculum of Siak Sri Indrapura during the reign of Sultan Syarif Kasim II (1915–1946). Employing a historical (historiographical) method with a qualitative approach, the research analyzes archival documents, historical records, and relevant literature. The findings reveal that Sultan Syarif Kasim II reformed Islamic education by utilizing the Siak River as a natural laboratory and a primary learning medium. Maritime values were integrated through two main approaches: the incorporation of riverine values into Fiqh and Akhlak subjects and the application of riparian philosophies in character development. Furthermore, environment-based learning encouraged a contextual understanding of Islamic teachings while strengthening Malay cultural identity among students. The study demonstrates that a curriculum grounded in maritime local wisdom successfully created a synthesis between Islamic values and local identity, making education more relevant to the socio-cultural realities of the community. The implications of this study highlight the importance of integrating local wisdom into Islamic education curricula to strengthen ecological awareness, cultural identity, and sustainable educational practices. This research contributes to the development of a contextual Islamic education model that may serve as a reference for educational institutions in other riverine and maritime regions
