Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed at improving the students? speaking in English, especially in accuracy, fluency, and their encouragement to speak English by using Guess the Mystery Object game technique. The participants were the VII-A grade students of MTs Al-Irsyad Pontianak consists of 36 students. The method of this research was classroom action research (CAR). It was conducted in two cycles. The data in this research was gathered qualitatively by using observation checklist, field notes, and a camera; and was analyzed in a descriptive way. The result of this research showed that the students? accuracy, fluency, and encouragement in speaking English have improved. The implementation of Guess the Mystery Object game encouraged the students to speak English and helped their friends to speak as well. The result of the students? speaking performance was also increased. The students can finally speak English in describing things around school better. In addition, there were 31 students from 36 students who successfully improved their accuracy and fluency of speaking.  Keywords: speaking, accuracy and fluency, guess the mystery object, classroom action research.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to improve students’ writing narrative text by using West Kalimantan folklore. This research used a classroom action research. The sample of this research was XI MIA 1 students of SMA Negeri 2 Pontianak which consisted of 40 students. Field note, observation checklist, and students’ writing test were used as the tools of data collecting. The writer applied 2 cycles in this research. The process of cycle 1 was needed to improve. The writer and the English teacher considered to take the cycle 2. The cycle 2 was successful because each students improved their score in writing. The writer concluded the good process brings good score. The use of West Kalimantan folklore was able to improve the students’ writing narrative text. Keywords: Folklore, Writing, Narrative Text Abstrak: Penelitian dilakukan untuk meningkatkan siswa menulis narrative teks menggunakan cerita rakyat Kalimantan Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan sebuah penelitian tindakan kelas. Sampel penelitian ini yaitu siswa XI MIA 1 SMA Negeri 2 Pontianak yang terdiri dari 40 siswa. Instrumen pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah catatan proses belajar mengajar, lembar pengamatan dan hasil tulisan siswa. Penulis menggunakan dua siklus dalam penelitian. Proses dari siklus pertama perlu diperbaiki. Penulis dan guru bahasa Inggris memutuskan untuk mengambil siklus 2. Siklus 2 berhasil karena setiap siswa mengalami peningkatan dalam menulis. Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa proses yang baik akan menghasilkan nilai yang baik. Penggunaan cerita rakyat Kalimantan Barat bisa meningkatkan siswa dalam menulis teks narrative. Abstract

Mental well-being at school is a strategic issue and has concerned education practitioners lately. Most teachers know the importance of mental health and its impact on student’s learning achievement especially in increasing the speaking skill of students. In English class, students with mental well-being tend to have higher self-confidence in the learning process, especially in speaking activities while some students with insecurity experience failure. This is the reason for researchers to research these students. The case study that occurred at primary school, became a problem faced by teachers in English learning. Most students with insecurity observed in this research are great students but they lose self-confidence so they fail in learning process. This research aims to describe this phenomenon in detail by collecting data through observation and interviews. Teachers apply several treatments to make students confident so they dare to speak English in the learning process. Before applying the appropriate treatment teachers should enrich their knowledge and insights regarding student psychology to be more sensitive and care for students with mental conditions. By knowing the condition of students, the teacher can consider what actions can help and support them to be motivated to learn. The description of causes, how the symptoms of insecure students, and what should teachers do with insecure students. The results of this research are that the student’s self-confidence students have increased and then the teacher finds the progress of insecure students in their learning achievement.
