Abstract

The beef cattle population in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, declined during 2021–2023, mainly due to low-quality feed in the dry season and poor reproductive management. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of Bali cattle farmers in producing probiotic-based fermented feed from agricultural waste and in reproductive management, particularly estrus detection and postpartum endometritis. The program was conducted with the SEHATI Farmer Group in Fatukoa, Maulafa District, using a participatory empowerment model consisting of extension, hands-on training in silage and hay production, reproductive examination, and mentoring. Participants were 24 farmers and 15 animal health extension officers. Changes in knowledge (10 items) and skills (8 items) were measured with pre- and post-test questionnaires and analyzed using normalized gain (N-gain) and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Farmers’ knowledge increased from 43.3% to 85.0% (N-gain 0.74, high; p=0.002) and skills from 21.9% to 69.8% (N-gain 0.61, moderate; p=0.008), with the largest gains in lamtoro hay production, silage making, and estrus detection. A total of 23 of 24 farmers (95.8%) expressed willingness to adopt probiotic-based feed technology. The program strengthened farmers’ capacity to provide feed throughout the year and to improve the reproductive efficiency of Bali cattle; continued mentoring is needed for silage quality assessment and postpartum cow care.
