Abstract

Background: Hypercholesterolemia is one of the most common diseases in the world, with cholesterol levels exceeding normal levels. Hypercholesterolemia can cause various systemic disorders in the body. One of the signs is by decreasing HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels. Dragon fruit peel contains many ingredients, such as vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin C, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and other minerals that can affect the increase in HDL production and reduce total cholesterol levels. Purpose: To know the effect of red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus)on increasing levels of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) hypercholesterolemia. Methods: Male rats were made hypercholesterolemic using a mixture of lard (3 ml) and egg yolk (1 g) for 14 days orally. 20 hypercholesterolemic male rats were further divided into 5 treatment groups and given dragon fruit peel extract therapy with different treatments, namely T0 negative control (CMC-Na 1% + aquadest), T1 positive control (Simvastatin 0.0013 mg/200 g BW), T2, T3 and T4 (each 100, 150, 200 mg/kg BW red dragon fruit peel extract) for 14 days orally.  Blood serum was taken on day 36 and tested in the laboratory using a chemical analyzer machine; then the data were analyzed using the univariant multiple way one-way ANOVA statistical test with a significant difference (p>0.05). Results: The P4 treatment group has an effective dose (200 mg/kg BW) to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, while the P3 treatment group (dose 150 mg/kg BW) is less effective but can still have an effect. Conclusion: This research showed that red dragon fruit peel extract could increase HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol levels with an effective 200 mg/kg BW dose.

Abstract

Anxiety disorder is one of the important public health problems. This study aimed to find out whether patchouli (Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.) essential oil (PEO) has an anxiolytic-like effect in mice. A total of 20 mice were divided into five treatment groups i.e. (C1) was treated with 1 mg/kg of saline intraperitoneally; (C2) was treated with 1 mg/kg of diazepam intraperitoneally; (T1) 1% PEO inhalation, (T2) 2.5% PEO inhalation, and (T3) 5% PEO inhalation. All experimental animals were put in the Elevated Plus-Maze (EPM), observed for five minutes, and investigated the following parameters i.e. the total number of squares that are transverse in the open arms (STO), the number of visits to the open arms (VOA), the number of visits to the closed arms (VCA), the time spent in the open arms (TOA), and the time spent in the closed arms (TCA). In results, T1 and T2 groups had a minor impact on the VOA. T1 group also had little effect on TOA. Closed-arm activities (VCA and TCA) were unaffected by any of the treatments. The conclusion was revealed that T1 or less of PEO inhalation can potentially provide anxiolytic-like effects in mice.

Abstract

Pendem Village, Ngariboyo District, Magetan Regency is one of the villages that has the potential for cattle farming. However, cattle breeders in Pendem Village have problems, namely the high incidence of repeated mating in females mated through artificial insemination (AI) and the lack of availability of animal feed in the dry season. The solutions offered in this activity are (1) increasing the knowledge of BUMDes Tirto Mulyo Pendem cattle breeders about cattle reproductive disorders and (2) processing agricultural waste as animal feed in Pendem Village. The output target to be achieved is to increase the understanding of breeders regarding the reproduction of beef cattle and how to process it by making haylage and fermenting agricultural waste. The method used to achieve these output targets is through 2 stages, namely counseling and training. Based on the results of the pre- and post-test, it shows that there is an increase in the knowledge and abilities of breeders related to reproduction and processing of feed derived from agricultural waste, detection of estrus in female cattle, reporting on reproductive health disorders in cattle, causes and symptoms of reproductive disorders in female cattle, the importance of vaccination and animal health programs, cleanliness of pens, cleanliness of individual cattle and fermentation of feed shows an increase in participants who are very knowledgeable from around 0% - 15% to around 4% - 20.7%, it is expected to support the productivity of beef cattle in Pendem Village.

Abstract

The consumption of carrot juice (Daucus carota) has been associated with various health benefits, yet its effects on metabolic parameters such as uric acid and blood glucose levels remain inadequately explored. Understanding these effects is crucial for developing dietary recommendations, particularly for conditions related to elevated uric acid and blood glucose. This research aimed to investigate the impact of excessive carrot juice administration on uric acid and blood glucose levels in rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study sought to determine whether carrot juice could serve as a beneficial dietary intervention or if it posed risks for metabolic dysregulation. A true experimental design was employed, utilizing a post-test only control group approach. Four healthy rats were divided into two groups: a control group receiving standard rat feed and a treatment group receiving carrot juice alongside their feed for seven days. Blood samples were collected after a 12-hour fasting period, and uric acid and blood glucose levels were measured using an Easy Touch GCU glucometer. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and T-tests to assess significant differences between groups. The results indicated that excessive administration of carrot juice significantly decreased uric acid levels in the treatment group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conversely, blood glucose levels were found to be significantly higher in the treatment group (p < 0.05), suggesting a complex interaction between carrot juice consumption and metabolic regulation. The study concludes that while excessive carrot juice can effectively lower uric acid levels in rats, it may also lead to increased blood glucose levels. These findings highlight the need for cautious dietary recommendations regarding carrot juice intake, particularly for individuals at risk of hyperglycemia. Future research should focus on larger sample sizes and explore the effects of carrot juice on various physiological systems and stress-related impacts on metabolic parameters.

Abstract

Broiler are popular meat-producing birds in Indonesia because they contain high levels of animal protein. Apart from being used in the treatment of infectious diseases, antibiotics are also used as antibiotic growth promoters (AGP). However, the use of antibiotics as feed additives has been prohibited, a natural substitute for AGP is katapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.). This study aims to determine the effect of administering katapang leaf extract (Terminalia catappa L.) on the number and type of leukocytes in broiler. This study used 24 Cobb strain broiler which were divided into four treatment groups, each group consisting of six replications. The treatment groups were P0 = only given 1% CMC-Na solution, P1 = Katapang leaf extract solution with 5% concentration, P2 = Ketapang leaf extract solution with 10% concentration, P3 = Katapang leaf extract solution with 15% concentration. The treatment is given orally with a syringe, given to chickens aged 21–35 days. At the end of the study, 2 ml–3 ml of blood is taken from the brachial vein. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance and continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test
