Abstract

The issue of English acquisition in Indonesian context where English is taught as a foreign language has been circulating for years. The presents study aims at contrasting two languages as, Indonesian language as the Source Language (SL) and English as the Target Language (TL). Participants were chosen purposively and generated 10 students of Senior High School. Data were collected through written test. The researcher provides 21 Indonesian declarative sentences as the main instrument. The result of this research was initiated qualitatively. The findings of the study indicate that the similarities of declarative sentence patterns between Indonesia and English language revealed in three categories. They are transitive, bitransitive, and intransitive. Furthermore, the differences are indicated by four categories, those are nominal, adjectival, prepositional, and numeral category. The presents study suggests to initiate the study of contrastive analysis in different languages to obtain deeper understanding and horizon about the language.

Abstract

Movie is a medium that can easily attract human attention, in terms of image quality and storyline. However, not everyone is aware of the hidden meaning in conversation between the actors.  This research was conducted to explore the hidden meaning of the conversation in Fast Five movie. The objective of this research is to find out and analyse the types of conversational implicature in Fast Five movie. Fast Five movie was directed by Justin Lin and released in 2011. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Researcher employ himself as a research instruments by collecting, observing and analyzing the data. This research are expected to increase people’s ability to understand the hidden meaning of a conversation. Conversational implicature is divided into 2 categories, particularized implicature and generalized implicature. Besides, generalized implicature consists of indefinite implicature and scalar implicature. The result of this research are 10 data regarding Particularized Implicature, 4 data regarding Generalized Implicature, 5 data regarding Indefinite Implicature and 7 data regarding Scalar Implicature. The percentage obtained from the 4 types of Conversational Implicature are 39% found in Particularized Implicature, 15% found in Generalized Implicature, 19% found in Indefinite Implicature and 27% found in Scalar Implicature.

Abstract

When two or more languages are switched during a monologue or dialog, sociolinguistics who research language used to refer to it as "code-switching" or "code-mixing”. This thesis examines the analysis of code-mixing and code-switching of the Cinta Laura podcast media on Puella's account. This research aims to analyze the types and reasons of code-mixing and code-switching that Cinta Laura uses in the podcast "Kuliah Keluar Negeri itu Perlu Gak sih?".The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques used in this research include observation, qualification, and data analysis. The theory used for the types and reasons of code mixing and code switching is Hoffman's (1991) theory.  The results of this research show that the types and reasons of code-mixing and code-switching used by Cinta Laura in the podcast entitled "Kuliah Keluar Negeri itu Perlu Gak sih?" are, the type of code-mixing most dominant is Intra-sentential code-mixing with data results 13 (thirteen), the type of code-switching that is most dominant is Intra-sentential code-switching with data results 7 (seven), and the reason for code-mixing and code-switching that most dominant used is talk about a particular topic with 20 (twenty) data results.

Abstract

This legal study investigates the implications of the proposed renaming of West Java Province to Tatar Sunda Province, employing the approach of intuitive semantic dualism to address issues of language, territory, ethnicity, and national identity. The research draws on data from academic journals, books, media reports, and interviews, comparing secondary data with field opinions on the languages and bordering regions of the Sundanese dialect. The findings reveal that, although the Sundanese linguistic system was expected to play a crucial role in the renaming process and promote territorial unity, it falls short due to the inclusion of regions such as Banten, pre-independence Batavia, and bilingual border areas in the east and north. This geographic and linguistic complexity means that the name "Tatar Sunda" does not accurately reflect the distinct linguistic, cultural, and territorial identities of the Sundanese people as described by J. van Baal. Legally, while there are no barriers to the renaming policy, the proposed name fails to adequately represent the region's diverse identities. Consequently, the study recommends further exploration of more representative alternatives that align with the existing legal framework, ensuring that the name change is not only legally valid but also appropriately reflects the region's identity.

Abstract

The research aims to understand the types of deixis in the Moana movie and describe their function in conversation. The study uses qualitative research methods, including reading, watching, listening, and taking notes. The researchers identified three types of deixis: person, spatial, and temporal. Person deixis is ranked first with 92% of the total deixis, followed by spatial deixis at 6% and temporal deixis at 2%. Dexis are found in the introduction, beginning, and end of the story. The deixis function is divided into two: pointing and referring. Pointing is divided into singular and plural forms, providing clarity in communication. Referring is divided into words referring objects, people, and places, working as a link between sentences. The total number of types of deixis in the Moana movie is 1,307.

Abstract

Critical literacy (CL) emphasizes the analysis of texts to understand power dynamics and promote social justice, helping students challenge established norms. However, further research is needed on its integration into the English curriculum for Indonesian university students. This case study explores the strategies used by an EFL teacher to foster CL development among 28 student-teachers at an Indonesian university through narrative texts. Data was gathered through classroom observations, students' reflective journals, and interviews, and thematically analyzed. Findings revealed that the teacher applied strategies such as "reader as code breaker," "reader as meaning maker," "reader as text user," and "reader as text analyst." Additionally, the Four Resources Model of CL enhanced students' abilities, particularly in meaning-making and text critique. Practical implications for curriculum design suggest that integrating CL strategies into the EFL curriculum can encourage students to engage more critically with texts, fostering deeper understanding and social awareness. For teacher training, this study highlights the importance of equipping educators with strategies for facilitating critical literacy in diverse classroom settings. The study advocates for a systematic integration of CL in EFL curricula across Indonesian higher education to enhance the quality of English programs and prepare students for more active participation in global discourse.

Abstract

Nowadays, many people use code-mixing in their daily lives. Therefore, content creators use it as a tool to introduce culture and provide information to audiences who may not be familiar with the language. This research decided to find the types of code-mixing in Maudy Ayunda's "Stress Management" vlog. The method used to conduct this research is descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is Maudy Ayunda’s utterances. This research used spoken discourse to collect the data. For collecting the data the spoken utterances in Maudy Ayunda “Stress Management” vlog were watched, read and listened. In collecting the data of code mixing was found that Hybrid Insertion is inserting foreign language elements in the mother tongue. Hybrid Insertion is found 7 times, while Word Insertion is 6 times, Phrase Insertion 2 times, Repetition Insertion 5 times, Indiom Insertion 0 times and Clause Insertion 1 time. It is concluded that Maudy most often uses Hybrid Insertion rather than other types.

Abstract

The present study attempts to investigate the grammatical error performances in Indonesia EFL learners’ writing through the framework of Error Analysis (EA).  The errors are examined and categorized based on the integration of linguistic and surface strategy to gain detailed and comprehensive results. This study was conducted through a qualitative approach within an intrinsic case study design. This study was initiated in 1 senior high school of Kuningan city, West Java. It involved one hundred participants in the twelfth grade. The data were mainly obtained through written test and interview. The results reveal that the learners commit numerous error types in fourteen linguistic categories, especially in the verb areas. The errors are dominated in the form of misinformation and omission type. Furthermore, the possible sources of errors is obtained through the learners’ personal perspectives and analyzing the errors themselves. The sources involves the incapability to accomplish, recognize and comprehend the foreign language rules and its restrictions, less mastery of vocabulary and grammars. Hence, these shortcomings should be great concerns for the involved authorities. It is suggested to consider some advanced actions to overcome the errors and fulfill the learner needs.
