Abstract

The Spatial Planning Law of the Republic of Indonesia requires cities to provide a minimum of 30% land for green open space (RTH). In the midst of meeting this target, the commercial use of public green open space is growing. The situation can potentially reduce the effective area used for the public and affect the quantity of space, as well as the quality of citizen interaction with green open space. This study aims to identify the type and level of public green open space commercialization in Banda Aceh, identify research themes related to green open space commercialization, and formulate a priority list for further study taking into account the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research was conducted through focus group discussions, field observations, interviews and opinion polls. Preliminary research results in Banda Aceh indicate that commercial activities have the potential to transform public green open space into quasi-public. The presence of multi actors in the management of commercial activities in RTH can be a synergy, but it can also be a contest. The impact of the decrease in visits and the intensity of commercial activities occurred in the early days of the pandemic, but has increased again so that special handling is needed. The focus of research related to the use of green open space as an alternative space for interaction, especially during the pandemic, needs to be formulated with an interdisciplinary approach. The identified priority research agendas are those of applied research characteristics, namely the complete mapping of green open space that is affected by commercial activities and the application of micro zoning to control space use in green open space, including to mitigate the potential spread of the covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Abstract

In tourism development, the majority of building materials used are modern materials. Even many local people are not familiar with the typical building materials of Central Aceh. Roofs made of serule leaves are traditional materials in Central Aceh (Ferah Yosantia et al., n.d.). The serule plant has flowers and leaves that are similar to Etlingera elatior, the Zingiberaceae family. Serule leaves grow abundantly around the edge of Lake Laut Tawar, Bintang District which continues eastward for 20 km to Serule Village. So this community service developed the manufacture of serule leaf roofs through mentoring and training for the people of Genuruen Village. This service activity was carried out in Genuren Village, Aceh Tengah applying several stages, namely: preparation stage, socialization, and implementation of activities and evaluation. Each stage is carefully planned so that the activity runs according to expectations. There are several parties involved in this activity. The results of this training will be used as a roof covering material for Umah Pitu Ruang, as a continuation of the unfinished UPR Redevelopment project. The goal is to maintain and revive the tradition of traditional craftsmanship. In addition, the final product of this serule soup will also be used in the renovation of gazebos as public facilities in Genuren Village. From the training activities on making traditional roofs using serule leaves, the community gained knowledge and skills to make serule soup. Thus, the community in Genuren Village can preserve the serule plant which is now rare, utilize local resources effectively, and improve their economic welfare.

Abstract

The low level of public understanding about historical and architectural values of historical areas in both urban and rural areas often leads to neglect or even destruction of cultural heritage. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness of the importance of architectural and urban conservation through a service learning approach in the form of advocacy based on popular scientific writing in online media. To this end, the implementing team compiled and published four popular scientific articles that discuss conservation issues in communicative language and are tailored to the characteristics of general readers. The implementation method consists of three main stages: preparation (collection of materials, writing training), preparation and correction of articles, and publication and dissemination through various digital media. The results of the activity show that this strategy is able to reach a wider audience, encourage public discussion, and raise new awareness of the importance of preserving urban architecture. This activity also succeeded in positioning academic knowledge as an integral part of the media-based social advocacy movement. In the future, a similar approach is recommended to be expanded in scale with policy support and cross-sector collaboration.

Abstract

The discovery of a former railroad track that connects Padang Tiji (Pidie) to Gampong Lamtamot (Aceh Besar) is an evidence of the arrival of the invaders, the Dutch colonialists, who colonize Aceh Besar Regency. Various buildings and infrastructure were made to support their existing which several of those are still physically exist in the Saree Settlement, Lembah Seulawah District, in the forms of chimneys, houses, wells, ponds, old dams, and water distribution tanks. They are abandoned but hold the potential as a historical tourist spot in relation to the spirit of the people of the Aceh Besar Region who have fought against the colonial for Indonesian independence. This research is conducted to map each heritage in the Saree Settlement and explore the tourism potential of each heritage by examinging the strengths and the weaknesses as well as the opportunities and challenges formed by these strengths and weaknesses. The data collected are the result of direct observation, interviews, and lierature review. The results showed that there are buildings that are not well maintained and there are also some buildings that have been managed as tourist attractions which each of them holds the potential of either educational potential (research centers, study tour objects), natural potential (recreation), man-made, and cultural potential (tourist attractions). Furthermore, this study also adresses the parties that can support the implementation of the potential in order to to maintain the local wisdom and improve to economic of the surrounding community of this heritage.

Abstract

This article reports on the design and implementation of thematic extracurricular activities for primary school students regarding the introduction of two professions : architect and urban planner. The program was carried out during the pandemic with all the limitations for direct physical interaction. This report elaborated methods for combining materials and ways to manage interactions in such situation. The combination of materials is expected to provide an introduction to the professions and introduce knowledge about the field in an interesting and age-appropriate way for children. It also act as a proxy to reach parents and schools with architectural design and urban planning issues. Implementation that combines offline and online methods is an alternative model for implementing other activities both during the pandemic and in normal situations. The results of the activity show that students and parents were very interested and actively involved. The main obstacle faced and worth anticipating in implementing similar activities is the level of familiarity with online interactions (with was new at the time) and finding mechanisms for activities to develop scientific interests at an early age, not incidentally but on a regular basis.

Abstract

Aceh Tengah Regency, as one of the regions with significant natural and cultural tourism potential in Aceh Province, has experienced various changes in its community settlement patterns. However, these changes have not occurred uniformly across all villages. For example, Toweren Village in Lut Tawar District continues to preserve its traditional houses and local wisdom amid the tide of modernization. The phenomenon of maintaining traditional values amidst contemporary developments is an interesting subject for study, particularly in the context of socio-cultural changes and settlement spatial patterns. This study aims to analyze the spatial pattern of settlements in Toweren Village, which is shaped by the interaction between local culture and the dynamics of changing times. The research method used is descriptive evaluation, employing both primary and secondary surveys for data collection. The analysis is conducted by presenting maps, written sources, and field observations, which are then described. The results show that the macro spatial concept in Toweren Village is formed through the physical arrangement of the settlement environment, reflecting the division of space based on land use. Residential areas are located in the village center, while agricultural and plantation lands lie outside the residential zone. At the micro scale, housing occupancy follows the hulu-teben spatial layout concept, which serves as the basis for regulating the position and function of spaces within the settlement. Areas with higher topography are considered more sacred than those with lower topography. The settlement pattern of Toweren Uken follows a top-down concept, with a hierarchical spatial structure from the center outward, in accordance with cultural values. Initially concentrated around Umah Pitu Ruang, the settlement pattern has now spread throughout the village. Changes are also evident in the increasingly narrow yards of houses due to population growth, illustrating the dynamic between preserving traditional spatial patterns and socio-demographic development.

Abstract

This community service project focuses on disaster advocacy in Aceh, Indonesia, by drawing lessons from Japans experience with Mount Fuji. The subject of dedication is the local community and university students in Banda Aceh, particularly those with limited knowledge and preparedness regarding the volcanic hazards of Mount Seulawah. The aim of this program is to raise disaster literacy, strengthen awareness, and encourage proactive preparedness through an innovative advocacy model that combines technology and cultural approaches. The methodology of this program involved several stages: information gathering and literature review about Mount Seulawah and Mount Fuji; team discussions and planning to design advocacy content; interactive media displays such as VR application MSeulawah, 360-degree videos, banners, brochures, and cultural arts; and public advocacy conducted during the Bunkasai Festival at Syiah Kuala University. Tactics included the use of cardboard VR for immersive experiences, video screenings, interactive games to test disaster knowledge, and cultural elements such as Japanese art and traditional games to increase community engagement. The outcomes demonstrate that the integration of technology and cultural strategies was effective in attracting participation, especially among students. Visitors reported an increase in knowledge and awareness of volcanic risks, while the interactive media successfully enhanced retention and engagement. This initiative highlights the potential of hybrid advocacy models to strengthen community resilience and suggests the establishment of a Seulawah Museum as a long-term educational platform.

Abstract

Bamboo is very abundant in the Gayo Highlands, but locals mostly use it for simple things like temporary shelters in rice fields and fences around houses. In the past, before modern materials became widely available, bamboo played a significant role in traditional Gayo buildings, both structurally and culturally. A three-day bamboo workshop was held to revive bamboo as a versatile, sustainable building material for modern architecture, while preserving its cultural significance. The workshop had two main goals: teaching how bamboo can work with modern materials like steel and cement, and showing new designs for tourism buildings using bamboo. Participants learned how to process bamboo, connect pieces, and preserve it. They also created new building ideas combining bamboo with other materials. The workshop helped the community understand bamboos environmental, cultural, and economic importance, supporting sustainable tourism and contributing to global goals for sustainable cities and responsible use of resources.
