Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the students? writing skills. It is believed that writing is a powerful device to reflect language structure and to promote language learning.  However, many students still experience difficulties in writing since it requires the appropriate grammatical and textual structures. Therefore, this study tries to analyse the students? writing skills that will help them to improve their communicative competence. Data were obtained through documentation of students? texts and interviews. The theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics, explanation text, and communicative competence were employed as the framework of the text analysis. The findings revealed the social function, the generic structure, the linguistic features, and also the grammatical and discourse competence in students? explanation texts. It was concluded that the students perceived the importance of the use of correct grammar and textual structure in their writing. Regarding some grammatical mistakes in students? explanation texts, it is recommended that teacher give explicit teaching and more exercises to them so that the students? communicative competence can be developed.DOI: 10.24071/llt.2019.220206

Abstract

The community service program is one of the “Tri Dharma” for the university in a scheme of society dedication. The general purpose of community service is to allow students to implement the knowledge obtained during university. This is the real implementation to solve real problems in society. The community service program was held in Sukamandi, Sagalaherang, Subang. It is located around 28 km from Polman Bandung. Located in the foothills of Tangkuban Parahu, this village has a lot of potential tourist attractions. One of the problems during the night is the lack of lighting. This program offers a solution to install integrated solar-powered street lighting. Solar energy potential in Indonesia is around 207,8 GW, which is only 0,1% used for electricity. As discussed with the headman of Sukamandi village, three solar-powered street lights are installed in the Bukit Jamali and Curug Cibingbin areas. The specification of solar-powered street lighting is 150 Watts and the solar panel is 30 Wp which complies with SNI standards. The performance of solar panels can be achieved with an average power of 29,9 W.  Based on the measurement result, the time required to charge the battery to full condition is 7.06 hours in fine weather. The lifetime of solar-powered street lighting is approximately 5.7 years, depending on operating conditions and the environment.

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of science and technology, the role of technology in industry is also increasing, particularly through automation that simplifies and enhances work process efficiency. To support this development, education plays a crucial role in enhancing students' competencies. One relevant subject in industrial technology is Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). In PLC education, trainer tools are used to help students understand industrial control concepts. At Politeknik Manufaktur Bandung, particularly in the Mechatronics and Automation Engineering Technology programs, the use of PLC trainers is still limited to basic input-output features. Survey results show that most students only understand Ethernet communication protocol and have never connected more than one PLC in a single system, resulting in a limited understanding of inter-PLC communication. This research aims to develop a trainer that teaches various PLC communication protocols, including Controller Link, DeviceNet, Serial RS-232C, and Ethernet, with inter-PLC and HMI communication implementation. The system uses three PLCs, where an Omron CP1H PLC as the master uses Controller Link to communicate with another Omron CP1H PLC as a slave, DeviceNet for remote slave devices, Serial RS-232C to communicate with an Omron CJ2M PLC as a slave, and Ethernet connected to Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) Omron NB7W and Kinco GL070E for PLC data monitoring. Based on the assessment results, the overall trainer tool evaluated received an effectiveness score of 95.1% from 6 aspects of the assessment. This trainer is expected to enhance students’ understanding of PLC communication protocols and their applications in integrated systems.

Abstract

For agriculture that uses greenhouses, environmental health, especially soil and air, is very important. Therefore, soil and air quality must be managed properly. One way to manage this is by using a wireless sensor network system to facilitate monitoring by greenhouse farmers. This wireless sensor network concept uses NRF24L01+ devices as communication modules and ESP32 as microcontrollers on the master/receiver and 5 nodes/transmitters with each node using DHT22, Soil Moisture Sensor, MH-Z19, MQ-9, and MQ-2 sensors. The focus and purpose of this research is to analyze Quality of Service on wireless sensor network systems with latency/delay test, throughput test, jitter test, packet loss test parameters applied to a greenhouse monitoring system. The final results prove that the performance of the wireless sensor network is very good, so the system can be applied to monitoring environmental quality in greenhouses because the system can work in real-time.

Abstract

The increasing human population and rapid urbanization have led to a surge in the demand for manufactured products. This requires more complex and digitally connected control systems. Industrial automation, especially the use of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), is key to improve efficiency and productivity. However, the integration of different brands of PLCs in one system faces challenges due to differences in systems, controls, and communication protocols. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) is implemented to overcome this problem by connecting the controlling device to the supervisory software. This research aims to develop Node-RED based SCADA to monitor and control Modular Production Systems (MPS) with multi brand PLC integration. Multibrand integration is applied to implement and test the performance of FINS UDP and Modbus TCP protocols. The test results show FINS UDP has a lower delay (66.85 ms) and higher throughput (3706.2 bps) than Modbus TCP, which has a delay of (348.05 ms) and a throughput of (3353.25 bps).
