Abstract

The engaging and personalized nature from short video makes it quickly popular, yet concerns persist about their potential to diminish critical thinking skills. This study investigates whether short videos with educational content can improve students' critical thinking skills. Using a quasi-experiment method, Thirty-three participants were divided into control and experimental groups, with critical thinking measured using the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HCTSR) based on essay analysis in pretest and posttest. After administering educational short videos to the experimental group, the results showed that there was an increase in students' critical thinking skills, shown by the result of controlling the pretest variable through the ANCOVA test with a p-value of <0.001. The result highlights the potential of educational short videos as tools for fostering critical thinking by providing interventions which prioritize treatment fidelity through standardized protocols (SOPs) for content delivery, validating assessment tools, and structuring content design. Recommendations for future research include larger sample sizes, repeated data collection at strategic intervals, and rigorous validation of question complexity.

Abstract

The swing arm is one of the main components of a motorcycle that functions as a connection between the rear wheel and the frame. Under loading conditions, the joint area between the arm and the bridge experiences significant stress, leading to fractures in that region. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of installing gussets to reduce the stress that occurs at the joint area between the arm and the bridge in the swing arm of ELGO electric motorcycles. The research was conducted using the static analysis simulation method with Solidworks 2021-2022 Research License software. The loading conditions were simulated based on the actual usage of the electric motorcycle. The simulation results revealed that without the installation of gussets, the joint area between the arm and the bridge in the swing arm experienced stress exceeding the yield strength of the material. This would inevitably lead to the breakage of the swing arm and potentially cause accidents for motorcycle riders. However, after the gussets were installed, the stress at the joint area between the arm and the bridge remained below the yield strength of the material. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the installation of gussets successfully reduced the stress at the joint area between the arm and the bridge in the swing arm. This research outcome can serve as a reference for the design of swing arms for electric motorcycles.

Abstract

The learning outcomes achieved by students are influenced by many factors. This study aims to determine the level of support of factors (motivation, interest, family, teacher's role, learning methods and learning facilities) that influence the learning process in achieving student learning outcomes in CNC learning in class XI. The subjects in the study were Class XI students majoring in Mechanical Engineering at SMK Negeri 5 Padang in the 2022/2023 academic year totalling 37 people. Because the number of research subjects (population) is less than 100 people, so all of them are taken as samples or total sampling. Data collection was carried out using observation, questionnaires and documentation. Data analysis techniques using descriptive statistical techniques. From the data analysis, it shows that of each factor studied, the learning facility factor has the lowest level of support for student academic success compared to other factors that have been studied by researchers. Therefore, learning facilities at SMK Negeri 5 Padang in CNC subjects need to be improved again to support the student learning process and achieve better learning achievements for students.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the performance of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) with three different configurations, including Savonius, Darrieus, and a Savonius-Darrieus hybrid wind turbine, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The methodology involves 3D geometry modeling, simulation parameter setup, meshing, and post-simulation analysis using SolidWorks 2022 software. The simulation results indicate that the Savonius turbine achieves the highest power coefficient (Cp) and torque coefficient (Ct) among the three designs, with a maximum Cp value of 0.5 at a Tip-Speed Ratio (TSR) of 0.4. Conversely, the hybrid turbine demonstrates lower efficiency, although it theoretically offers potential for improving performance at low wind speeds. Pressure and flow velocity distributions reveal that the Savonius turbine maintains the most stable pressure pattern compared to the other configurations. These findings highlight the potential of the Savonius turbine as a small-scale renewable energy solution, particularly in urban areas with low wind speeds. Further research is recommended to optimize hybrid turbine designs using machine learning approaches and empirical validation through field experiments to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7, affordable and clean energy.
