Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the meaning of Ilham Karim's series of paintings Butterflies In My Stomach through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. This research analyses the semiotic process in Karim's 12-painting series, which depicts the emotional journey of his parents' relationship in three phases: encounter, conflict and separation. This research uses qualitative methods through structured interview and literature review. The results of the analysis using Peirce's semiotics show that visual signs such as the consistent use of sofa objects, bright colors and uniquely packaged figure gestures represent harmony, conflict and loss. The triadic interpretation (representament, object and interpretant) reveals a profound message about the emotional dynamics of family relationships. The results of this research provide a new understanding of visual symbolism in contemporary art world, particularly in the context of identity expression and personal trauma.

Abstract

Children with Special Needs (CSN) have unique potential that requires special approaches to support their development. This study aims to analyze the role of painting activities in the development of fine motor skills, concentration, emotional regulation, and self-expression of CSN at the Integrated Center Prof. Dr. Soeharso Surakarta. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using Miles and Huberman's interactive techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that painting activities effectively train fine motor skills through the use of brushes, enhance concentration and emotional regulation abilities, and provide a platform for self-expression for CSN. Moreover, painting helps boost children’s self-confidence through the appreciation of their artwork. These findings emphasize the importance of painting as part of an educational and therapeutic approach to support CSN development. Its implication is that painting can be more broadly implemented in inclusive educational activities to strengthen children’s abilities in various aspects of development.

Abstract

Refugees are defined as people who are due to a reasonable fear of persecution, caused by reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in certain social groups and political parties, are outside their nationality and do not want protection from the country. When refugees leave their home country or residence, they leave their lives, homes, possessions and family. The refugees cannot be protected by their home country because they are forced to leave their country. Therefore, protection and assistance to them is the responsibility of the international community. In countries receiving refugees, they often experience inhumane treatment such as rape, assault, discrimination, repatriated by force, those lead to the violation of human rights. There has been regulation for human rights in refugee issues both internationally and regionally, for instance Convention related to Status of Refugee 1951 and The Protocol related to the Status of Refugee 1967. There are at least five basic rights of refugees, they are the right to be protected from returning to the country of origin forcibly (non refoulement), the right to seek asylum, the right to obtain equality and non-discrimination, the right to live and to be secured, as well as the right to return home.
