Abstract

Writing an excellent and comprehensive text depends on applying appropriate grammatical cohesive devices. This study aims to investigate the types and errors of the grammatical cohesive devices found in the undergraduate student's thesis. The analysis used in the present study applied the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) proposed by Halliday and Hasan (2014). Through the qualitative design with content analysis, this study examines two undergraduate students' theses, focusing on finding and discussing sections at one private university in Jakarta. The analysis revealed that grammatical cohesive devices in the thesis are not diverse. The data's most dominant grammatical cohesive devices are references and conjunctions—no elliptical and substitution devices are found in the data. Besides, errors in applying grammatical cohesion in the undergraduate students' writing were found, especially in using personal and demonstrative references and extension conjunctions. It indicates that the students still lack understanding in applying the knowledge of grammatical cohesion in their writing, influencing the readers' understanding in capturing information from the thesis. It implies that the knowledge of appropriate grammatical cohesion is essential for students in academic writing, predominantly undergraduate thesis, to convey the ideas and information properly and coherently.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perspectives on digital classroom organization implemented during online learning in teaching ESP in the context of higher education level at Garut Technology of Institute. To evaluate the organization of digital class utilization in language learning and determine the barriers and opportunities during the process, a mixed-method design with a close-ended questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire was employed to reveal the students’ perspectives. 90 informatics engineering students studying English for Specific Purposes (ESP) were recruited in this study. The findings revealed that the students positively argued that their lecturer is capable of organizing and implementing various digital platforms during online learning. Most of the students are still motivated and engaged in learning even though it is conducted virtually. Besides, the platforms used by the lecturer synchronously and asynchronously are deemed to be effectively able to replace the face-to-face offline media since it keeps the lecturer and students interacting with one another. Some of the barriers come from the stability of internet access, students’ data, available devices, and particular technical issues. The implications suggest that both lecturers and students should prepare to adopt the digital classroom since it will be the new direction in language teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to describe: 1) laboratory management from the perspective of school principals 2) laboratory management from the perspective of science teachers 3) laboratory management from the perspective of students. The research method of research used is the survey method. The study population was all people in UPT SPF SMPN 24 Makassar. The sampling technique used was random sampling, using the slovin formula with a sample of 120 students, sampling teachers and principals using saturated sampling techniques. Data collection techniques using questionnaires. Data analysis techniques using descriptive statistics. The results showed that: 1) laboratory management in terms of the principal's perspective on the evaluation aspect, the majority chose the answer “Always” as much as 66.7%, 2) laboratory management in terms of the perspective of science teachers in the planning aspect, the majority chose the answer “Always” as much as 51.5%, the implementation aspect, the majority chose the answer “Often” as much as 35.29%, and the evaluation aspect, the majority chose the answer “Rarely” as much as 40.74%, 3) laboratory management in terms of the perspective of students in the implementation aspect, the majority chose the answer “Always” as much as 27.06% in UPT SPF SMPN 24 Makassar.

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) To find out the management of science laboratories at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar in the planning aspect. 2) To find out the management of science laboratories at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar in the aspect of implementation.3) To find out the management of science laboratories at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar in the evaluation aspect. The type of research in this article is descriptive using a quantitative approach at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar. The population in this study was UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar and the sample selected was the laboratory using the saturated sampling method. The research instruments and data collection techniques used were observation sheets. Descriptive statistical analysis is the analysis technique used in this study. The results showed that: on planning indicators, science laboratory management at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar was in the very poor category with a score of 24.24. Meanwhile, the implementation indicator shows that the science laboratory management at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar is in the insufficient category with a score of 35.29. Then, on evaluation indicators, science laboratory management at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 27 Makassar is in the insufficient category with a score of 25.92.

Abstract

Pentingnya memilih bahan bacaan untuk memahami format prosa dengan mempertimbangkan teks, jenis kalimat, dan konteks bacaan yang sesuai dengan tingkat kemampuan dan minat siswa atau mahasiswa. Rumus keterbacaan digunakan untuk menilai tingkat kesulitan suatu teks, sementara materi ajar yang autentik diperlukan untuk memperoleh metrik keterbacaan terutama dalam bahasa Inggris. Penggunaan meteri autentik, tampilan antarmuka, dan pengalaman pengguna dalam suatu aplikasi dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa dan mahasiswa dalam memperluas wawasan mereka. Pada era teknologi saat ini, kemajuan teknologi informasi dimanfaatkan untuk memberikan kemudahan dan kenyamanan dalam proses pembelajaran. Namun, buruknya perancangan User Interface (UI)/User Experience (UX) sering kali menjadi salah satu problematika dalam memanfaatkan kemudahan teknologi informasi, khususnya penggunaan sistem berbasis web. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Design Thinking, yang melibatkan tahapan-tahapan seperti Emphatize (Empati), Define (Penetapan), Ideate (Ide), Prototype (Prototipe), dan Test (Uji coba), untuk membangun perancangan prototipe UI/UX pada aplikasi Readability Analyzer. Hasil penelitian ini adalah sebuah prototipe UI/UX yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan efektivitas dan efisiensi pengguna dalam menggunakan aplikasi Readability Analyzer. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan suatu rancangan prototype UI/UX desain untuk aplikasi Readability Analyzer dalam meningkatkan kepuasan pengguna.

Abstract

Rapid technological developments have changed the learning paradigm where learning media technology becomes one of the effective tools in the learning process. Learning media not only motivates students, but also provides wider access to education, including for students with special needs such as intellectual disabilities. However, English learning media technology, especially for students with special needs, is still limited. Therefore, this study is to build English learning media for mild intellectual disabilities, to make learning easier and more enjoyable anywhere and anytime. The methodology used is the Multimedia Development Life Cycle consisting of several stages, namely Concept, Design, Material Collecting, Assembly, Testing, Distribution to build an application to visualize English material according to the 2013 curriculum for mild intellectual disabilities. The application is targeted for Junior High School (SMP) students. Alpha and beta testing was carried out, at the alpha testing stage, a functional application test was carried out where each menu was tested where all menu functions ran successfully. For beta testing, testing was carried out to identify user satisfaction with the application using the End User Computing Satisfaction method, the sampling method used a saturated sample approach. The results of the overall percentage of user satisfaction from the five dimensions in the EUCS method obtained results with very satisfied criteria with an average of all dimensions of 95.4% with the Android-based English subject learning media application for mentally retarded children.

Abstract

This research is entitled "Educational Method in the Quran Surah An-Nahl Verse 125 (the Analysis of Islamic Education Science)". This study aims to figure out the educational method contained in the Quran Surah An-Nahl verse 125. The method used was the descriptive-qualitative analysis method. The data were collected through library research from various sources, i.e. commentary books, educational science books, papers, and educational, scientific journals. The study revealed that the concept of educational methods contained in the Quran Surah An-Nahl verse 125 is the Hikmah, mau'izhah, and Jadil methods. The implications of these three methods in teaching and learning activities in schools are, first, the hikmah method can be synchronized with the lecture method. Second, the mau'izhah method can be applied in guidance and counselling sessions as a curative or repressive measure when a normative or procedural violation occurs and as a preventive measure where educators can use the mau'izhah session in the form of messages or appeals at the end of each learning session. Third, the Jadil method can be used to improve existing discussion methods.

Abstract

Digital platforms, particularly video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, have played a pivotal role in influencing travel decisions. As one of the emerging technologies impacting tourist behavior, YouTube has become increasingly significant. The present study focuses on evaluating the South Garut destinations, namely Santolo and Sayang Heulang Beaches, by analyzing comments provided in travel vlogs on YouTube, utilizing the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework through the attitude subsystem of appraisal, specifically affect, judgment, and appreciation. Adopting a qualitative descriptive paradigm, this study aims to elucidate the language phenomena associated with the tourism sector. Six travel vlog videos featuring comments from local tourists were examined, yielding 51 evaluative clauses related to Santolo Beach and 41 clauses pertaining to Sayang Heulang Beach. The findings of this study revealed the presence of all three attitude subtypes of the appraisal system (affect, judgment, and appreciation) within the analyzed data. Among these, appreciation through valuation with positive polarity emerged as the most dominant attitude subsystem. Overall, the results indicate that local tourists expressed considerable appreciation for the natural beauty of both destinations. Nevertheless, negative evaluations were also evident, addressing concerns such as parking facilities, stray animals, garbage disposal, illegal levies, inflated food prices, ticket management, and road conditions. Despite these issues, the general sentiment among local tourists remained predominantly positive regarding both destinations.

Abstract

The present study attempts to investigate the students' responses on the suitability of web-based readability analysis application results using the Systemic Functional Linguistics Framework through lexical density analysis with their level of language proficiency. This study used a qualitative method supported by some descriptive quantifications to analyze the lexical-density indexes of reading texts. Six texts were randomly selected from the reading texts written in five of Cambridge's Books, and nine participants at different levels were purposively selected to verify the accuracy. The findings revealed that the percentages of lexical density indexes of six selected Cambridge Books texts categorized based on the CEFR level used in this study and automatically analyzed by the application follow the complexity standard decided by the book's writers. Furthermore, the students at each level have a positive response to the text tested, as seen in their ability to answer the questions in each text created by the book's writers. This study provides the implication of informing educators to utilize the web-based readability analysis used in this study to help them analyze the text automatically, accurately, and quickly.
