Abstract

Bacillus cereus, a gram-positive bacterium with a high incidence of causing infection through food, is a common cause of infection. Plant extract from Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, and has been demonstrated to exhibit antibacterial action against other bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The purpose of this study is determining the antibacterial activity of vetiver root extract (Vetiveria zizanioides (L.)) against the growth of Bacillus cereus bacteria in vitro. In this experimental study, the inhibition effect of vetiver root extract against Bacillus cereus growth was measured using disc diffusion method. Extract consentraion used in this tudy were 60%, 80% and 100%. The diameter of area with no bacterial growth around disc (inbition zone) was measured and the average of diamter from four independent measurement was used to decide the sensitivity of bacteria towards the extract. The average measurement results from 60 percent concentration of extract were 6.70 mm, 7.04 mm for 80 percent concentration, and 7.05 mm for 100 percent extract concentration. The positive control, Amoxicillin 500 mg, had a diameter of 14.35 mm, whereas the negative control, sterile distilled water, had no impact. Bacillus cereus bacteria growth can be inhibited by Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) extract.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) among the elderly is steadily increasing, particularly in rural areas with limited access to healthcare services. This community-based activity aimed to enhance awareness, knowledge, and self-management skills among elderly residents of Dusun Baruga, Maros Regency, for early detection of hypertension and DM through integrated health education and screening. Methods included educational seminars, health screening using Easy Touch GCU (blood pressure, random blood sugar, cholesterol, uric acid), and waist circumference measurement. Results indicated a high prevalence of hypertension (43%), prediabetes (26%), borderline cholesterol levels (28%), high uric acid (17%), and abdominal obesity risk (70%). In conclusion, culturally-tailored educational interventions combined with routine health screenings effectively improved elderly awareness and self-detection skills for hypertension and DM, with potential applicability to similar community settings.ABSTRAKPrevalensi hipertensi dan diabetes melitus (DM) pada lansia terus meningkat, khususnya di wilayah pedesaan dengan akses terbatas terhadap layanan kesehatan.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Syndrome caused by a virus that is a subtype of the SARS-CoV virus is called Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2). This virus targets the respiratory system and results in COVID-19, an illness (Coronavirus Disease-2019). In addition, several other clinical signs of this illness are frequently seen, such as fever, anosmia, coughing, sore throat, or dyspnea. According to information from the Makassar City Health Office, as of August 1, 2021, there are 4310 current cases in Makassar City, with a downward trend in mask use. Aim: This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between the amount of community knowledge about COVID-19 and the amount of mask compliance in Gunung Sari Village, Makassar. Methods: The study used observational analytical research with a cross-sectional design sample of 52 people. The sampling used a random sampling technique. Results: About 61.5% of respondents know about COVID-19 awareness. Among them, 21.8 % (7 respondents) rarely use masks, 31.2% (10 respondents) sometimes use a mask, and 46.9% (15 respondents) continuously use a mask. Furthermore, there was a statistical association between the level of knowledge about COVID-19 and compliance using a mask (p <0.05). Conclusions: It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between community knowledge about Covid-19 awareness and mask compliance in Gunung Sari Sub-district
