Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the students’ English ability through selected response type by Socrative APP. The instruments of the test were multiple choice items and semi-structure interview to the students and lecturers. The tests were used multiple-choice items that consisted of 45 items; 25 items for structure and for reading sections 20 items. The test was designed based on the validity, reliability and curriculum. The sample of this research was 32 students of the first semester in Musi Rawas University. The result of this study showed that the students were mastered structure/grammar section more rather than reading section test. Their lecturers often taught grammar rather than reading and their lack of interest in reading were the reasons.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how parents can motivate their children to learn English. This is referred to as "case study research." This research was conducted in the Ganesha Course tutoring class with five students and five parents as subjects. The data collection method used a learning motivation scale and interviews. The data analysis technique used descriptive and qualitative data analysis. Subject One demonstrated high learning motivation, and the role of parents was important in motivating children to learn English. Subject two has low motivation to learn; the role of parents is high in motivating students to learn English. Subject three has medium learning motivation and a strong parental role in motivating children to learn English. Subject four has a high motivation to learn, and the role of parents is important in motivating the learning of English. Subject five has low learning motivation; the role of their parents is to motivate her. As a result, it was determined that the role of parents in motivating learning subjects 1, 2, 3, 4 and our five low-level subjects was significant

Abstract

This study was conducted by usingexperimental method. The objectives of the study were (1) to find out whetherthere is a significant difference in writing achievement between the eleventh graders who taught by using news broadcast videos and that of those who are not, (2) to find out whether there is asignificant interaction effect of news broadcasts videos and motivation in writing achievement of the eleventh graders (3) to find out whether there is a significant difference in writing achievement between the eleventh graders who have high motivation and those who have low motivation. The population of this study the was eleventh graders ofSMA Negeri 2 Palembang in the academy year of 2014/2015 consisting of 450 from 11 classes. The sample of the study are taken by using purposive sampling method. The totalof the samplesis 60. The results of the study are analyzed by using T-test and Two Way Anova. The results show that 1there is a significant difference in writing achievement between the eleventh graders who taught by using news broadcast videos and those who are not and there is a significant difference in writing achievement between the eleventh graders students who have high motivation and those who have low motivation based on t-test analyzed. Based ontwo way Anova, there is not any significant interaction effect of news broadcasts videos and motivation in writing achievement. Based on the result ofquestionnaire, the students agree that news broadcast videos motivate them to learn English

Abstract

English language education at the college student level is an important aspect of global higher education today. However, college students face various challenges that affect the effectiveness of English language learning. This research aims to find out the various challenges experienced by students to master English in an academic environment. Ten students enrolled in the D3 Hospitality study program for the third semester were interviewed for this study, which was carried out utilizing qualitative methodologies. The results revealed a number of challenges experienced by students in learning English such as difficulty understanding the material, complicated grammar pronounced and difficult to remember, lack of vocabulary mastered, differences between writing and pronunciation of English and feeling less confident when speaking English. The study also identified several strategies that can help address these challenges in hopes of improving English learning outcomes at the Polytechnics.
