Abstract

Night-shift nurses are at increased risk of fatigue due to circadian rhythm disruption, reduced sleep quality, and high occupational demands, which may affect well-being, work performance, and nursing care quality. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may support recovery and reduce fatigue. This study aimed to analyze the effect of ginger drink consumption as a complementary nursing intervention on fatigue among night-shift nurses. A quantitative pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design involved 27 night-shift nurses at RSUD dr. Dradjat Prawiranegara, Serang Regency, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Participants consumed 230–240 mL of ginger drink after night shifts for two consecutive days. Fatigue was measured using the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) before and after the intervention and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The mean fatigue score decreased from 31.85 to 25.44, with a significant reduction in fatigue levels (Z = −4.512; p = 0.001). Ginger drink consumption may therefore serve as a simple, safe, and practical complementary nursing intervention to reduce fatigue and support recovery among night-shift nurses. Further randomized controlled studies with larger samples are recommended.
