Abstract

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is an oral health problem that is of global concern, where dental caries is a dental disease characterized by damage to the tooth surface and if left untreated, the infection will spread to the pulp. The impact is changes in tooth structure, pain and infection and death of the pulp. There are 57 students out of 83 new undergraduate students in 2023 at the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business experiencing dental caries, this case has always been a common dental problem, but it must be reduced to a very low number of cases. Objective: to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and oral health behavior and the rate of dental caries in new students at the Faculty of Economics and Islamic Business, UIN North Sumatra, Medan. Methodology: The research method is observational analytics with a cross sectional approach, a sample of 287 respondents, data collection methods using observation and questionnaires. Results: there is a relationship between knowledge and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000), there is a relationship between attitudes and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000), and there is a relationship between behavior and the number of dental caries (? = 0.000). Discussion: behavior is the most dominant factor influencing the rate of dental caries ? = 0.002, OR value 26.903, and C.I 95% (3.250 – 222.684). Conclusion: Faculty to create a joint policy with university clinics in the form of an oral health program. Students are expected to know, behave well, and apply oral health behavior.

Abstract

Oral and dental health is a component of overall health that can significantly impact a child's quality of life. Dental caries is a major oral health problem among preschool children. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the severity of dental caries and the quality of life of children attending TK Bersama Ceria Delitua kindergarten. This analytical survey employed a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all children enrolled. A sample size of 30 participants was selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and dental examinations. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The mean decay (d) score was 5.47 ± 2.474, the mean extraction (e) score was 0.80 ± 1.064, and the mean filling (f) score was 0.13 ± 0.434. The overall mean def-t score was 6.40 ± 2.908. The mean child quality of life, as measured by the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS), was 46.43 ± 7.873. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between the severity of dental caries and children's quality of life (p = 0.003; r = 0.521), indicating a strong relationship. The study concludes that a higher def-t score is associated with a poorer quality of life in children.

Abstract

Observations in Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, revealed an abundant growth of Bacang mango trees (Mangifera foetida), yet their potential benefits remain underutilized by the local community. This study aimed to investigate and provide insight into the antibacterial properties of Bacang mango leaf extract. An experimental laboratory study was conducted using a randomized posttest-only control group design. The results demonstrated that Bacang mango leaf extract effectively inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro, surpassing the efficacy of 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate used as a positive control. Measurement of the inhibition zone diameters indicated a proportional relationship between extract concentration and antibacterial efficacy. At 25% concentration, the mean inhibition zone diameter was 13.15 ± 0.49 mm. Increasing the concentration to 50% yielded a larger diameter of 15.75 ± 0.66 mm, while the highest antibacterial activity was observed at 75% concentration, with an inhibition zone diameter of 16.73 ± 0.55 mm. In comparison, the 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate positive control produced an inhibition zone diameter of only 12.50 ± 0.26 mm. These findings suggest that Bacang mango leaf extract at 75% concentration is the most effective in inhibiting Streptococcus mutans growth. Its significantly greater inhibitory effect relative to lower concentrations and the positive control highlights its potential as a natural antibacterial agent.

Abstract

Background. Halitosis is a condition in which an unpleasant odor caused by oral microbes comes out of a person's mouth during exhalation, which makes other people feel uncomfortable. Probiotics seek to maintain the homeostasis of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract to suppress the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. This study aims to evaluate the potential of probiotics against halitosis as assessed by the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). Methods. The design of this study is an experimental study with a pre-post test approach. A total of 30 research subjects with criteria aged 20-28 years with complaints of halitosis seek treatment at the dental and oral polyclinic of Siti Hajar Hospital. Research subjects were asked to rinse their mouth with one of the commercial probiotic drinks already circulating in the market, where previously the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and after rinsing the probiotic drink, the levels of VSCs were measured again. Data analysis was carried out with the help of SPSS version 21 software. A univariate data analysis was carried out to obtain an overview of the distribution of degrees and levels of Volatile, Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) before, and after giving drinks probiotics. Results. The provision of probiotic drinks is sufficient to provide a significant qualitative change effect where there is a change in the degree of halitosis of the research subjects. After consuming probiotics, there was an improvement in the degree of halitosis of the research subjects, whereas there were no more subjects with severe halitosis. Conclusion. Consumption of probiotic drinks can reduce the levels of VSCs in the oral cavity, which indicates the ability of probiotics to reduce halitosis.
