Abstract

The tradition of swinging slaves is one of the intangible cultural heritages that is still preserved from generation to generation by the Melayu community in Dumai City, Riau Province. The practice of rocking a baby is not only limited to a physical act, but is also full of social and cultural meaning. However, along with social changes, solidarity in the Ayun Slave tradition has also undergone changes. By adopting Émile Durkheim's perspective, this research examines how factors such as urbanization, modernization and globalization influence the form and meaning of social solidarity in the Ayun Slave practice. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach. From the results of this research, it was found that the slave swinging tradition functions as a means of strengthening relationships between family members and society, and also as a medium for transferring cultural values from generation to generation. Slave swings also become a forum for people to share happiness and celebrate important moments in a child's life. Keywords: Social solidarity, Emile Durkheim, Ayun Budak.

Abstract

The preparation of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in the Regional Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPD) is a crucial step to ensure that environmental aspects are integrated into all stages of development planning. This study aims to examine the public consultation process in the preparation of the SEA for the Aceh Jaya RPJPD 2025–2045, as an application of a participatory approach oriented toward sustainability and social justice. The research uses a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of public consultation activities involving stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, traditional leaders, and local youth. The findings show that public consultation enhances transparency in planning processes, increases inclusivity in decision-making, and fosters a sense of ownership among the community regarding the region’s development direction. However, challenges remain in optimizing meaningful participation, such as limited participant capacity and time constraints for discussion. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening local capacity, adaptive facilitation, and developing feedback mechanisms as integral components of the SEA process. Furthermore, the study reflects the role of higher education institutions in accompanying transformative development processes through science-based community service. Thus, public consultation is not merely a legal-formal procedure but a strategy for community empowerment toward sustainable and participatory development.

Abstract

Tulak bala is a traditional practice in Mesjid Tuha Village, Meureubo Sub-district, West Aceh, aimed at averting disasters and seeking protection. This research explores the transformation of social solidarity within the tulak bala tradition, using Emile Durkheim’s perspective. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving key informants. The findings reveal a shift in the form of solidarity from mechanical to a more organic type. Previously, the tradition emphasized strong kinship bonds, shared beliefs, and mutual cooperation. However, with ongoing social changes, solidarity has weakened. Ritual aspects have also changed, including modifications in the types and quantities of offerings and reduced community involvement. Participation has shifted from active and collective to more passive and individual. The tradition, once a symbol of communal unity, now reflects broader societal transformations, where rituals have become more complex but less inclusive. This study highlights how modernization and shifting social structures influence local cultural practices and community solidarity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how adolescent girls form an understanding of gender inequality after watching the film Kartini (2017). This film is positioned as an educational medium that can trigger critical reflection on the social constructs that limit the role of women. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the social construction theories of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, which includes three main stages: externalization, objectification, and internalization. The subjects of the study were students in class XII of Social Studies 1 and Social Studies 2 of SMA Negeri 1 Kaway XVI, who were selected purposively. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that Kartini's film  is able to increase gender awareness in adolescent girls. At the externalization stage, female students began to voice their views on the gender role inequality that they experience on a daily basis. The objectification stage showed that their thinking was tested in social interactions, where some received support and some faced resistance from patriarchal culture. Meanwhile, at the internalization stage, social support has proven to be very influential on whether the values of equality can be truly accepted and appreciated.
