Abstract

The background of this research is that the use of the small group discussion method is more effective than the preaching method in teaching reading comprehension. understanding because they can read more comprehensively with their friends in small groups and then discuss the information they have read. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of student learning outcomes by using small group discussions in learning reading comprehension. This study uses a quantitative method by giving tests, namely pre-test and post-test to twenty eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Camba. This research applied a pre-experimental design. The test given to students is in the form of multiple-choice in the form of narrative text reading. The results of this study indicate that the experiment conducted by the researcher on students affects learning outcomes by Using Small Group Discussions in teaching reading comprehension. The average value in the pre-tests is 49.25 while the post-tests have an average value of 82.75. It was provided in the value of the t-test (8.152) which was greater than the value of the t-table (2.093). It indicated that there were significant differences, this is also indicated H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected.

Abstract

This research aimed at exploring lecturers and students’ perception on politeness in academic setting. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this research were seven lecturers of English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, selected based on some criteria, and the students of those lecturers. The data were collected through interview and focus group discussion. The data obtained from the instruments were transcribed and then analyzed qualitatively to meet the interpretation. The data gained through interview stated that lecturers and students perceived politeness as academism or formality and expression of emotional bonding. The meaning of academism or formality is talking using standard or acceptable language based on the shared culture and context of language usage. In addition, lecturer believes that politeness is an essential expression of feeling among humans showing an emotional bonding. When people have good relationships with others, they tend to consider politeness in communicating one another. Lecturers and students also viewed that politeness was very important in academic context, since it was a part of character education building and culture representation.

Abstract

Assessment is an evaluation tool in learning adjusted to the times. The criteria must be included in the assessment are indicators in the cognitive domain and critical thinking. Therefore, this study intends to explore teaching assessments prepared by lecturers in assessing students' cognitive shutter and critical thinking abilities. The data took in the pandemic period of pandemic in Covid-19. The subjects of this study were 269 lecturers who teaching in English education departments in some Muhammadiyas’ university in South Sulawesi. There were 25 items of questionnaires arranged to analyses the teacher assessment based on 10 indicators in critical thinking. The results showed the dominant lecturer measured the ability of students on the C1-C2 scale even though some lecturers had been on the C5-C6 scale. The lecturer learning assessment has implemented indicators of critical thinking skills. The study recommended for future researcher in developing assessment of teaching especially for English department.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perception of each student in using Google Classroom in the second semester paragraph writing course at the Department of English Education, Unismuh Makassar. In this study used quantitative research method. The data was collected through distributing questionnaires to each student. The sampling technique used by the researchers in this study was purposive sampling. The sample in this study were 27 students consisting of 14 students from class BG2A and 13 students from class BG2B class 2021 majoring in English Education. The results of this study was showed the variable that achieves the highest index was the "Ease for Use" variable, which was 80,9%, means that students agree that Google Classroom very easy to use during the learning process of paragraph writing, while the variable with the lowest index was “active”, which was 74,8%, means that it was still a little students who are active in the learning process using Google Classroom. However, the results of the analysis show that the index for each variable was in the "Agree" category. So in this study it can be concluded that students have a positive perception on using Google Classroom in paragraph writing courses.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ voices toward Gamification using Quizizz in grammar classes at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The data was collected through online questionnaire and presented in descriptive and numerical form. The population were the 7th semester students, namely 7D, 7E, and 7F of English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar and the sample were the 10 students from each class of the population. The sampling technique used in this research was purposive random sampling technique. This research findings showed that the students voices based on questionnaire’s answer toward the used of Quizizz in grammar classes. the result showed most of the students chose agreed on the positive statements and chose disagreed on the negative statements. The total highest mean score in terms of stimulation aspect was 4.47, attractiveness aspect was 4.40, perspicuity aspect was 4.27, and dependability aspect was 4.17. It means that students have a good voice toward Quizizz in grammar classes activities. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Gamification using Quizizz in grammar classes was approved by the students in English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar.
