Abstract

Abstract: For many years, it is believed that a good translator should be invisible in conducting his or her work. The more transparent and invisible the translator is, the better the quality of translation becomes. However, many experts argued that it is actually impossible for the translators  to  translate  without  leaving  their  thumbprints  behind. Thus, the notion of translator style appeared. Studying and exploring the topic of translator style would provide more corroborative support on the view that translators are not merely a mirror of the original author; in fact, they are creative individuals with distinct linguistic characteristics and behaviors, and that translation is not inferior to writing. The objective of this study is to analyze the style of two Indonesian translators of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia.” Moreover, this research also aims to enrich the literature of translator style in the Indonesian context since there are only a few studies about this particular topic in the Indonesian context. This research is qualitative in nature and utilized both corpus-assisted methodology and manual text analysis to gain the data. The findings show that the two Indonesian translators had fundamental differences in their translation. Translator A’s style in translating is more oriented to  target  text  and  target  readers  whereas  Translators  B  are  more inclined to adhere to the style of the original author and the source text. Abstract

This research aims to assess the translation quality by comparing the source text and the target text. The researcher decided to compare the speech by Barack Obama in 2012 United Nations General Assembly and its translation in Indonesian. The model that the researcher used to find out the translation quality is Translation Quality Assessment: A Model Revisited by Juliane House. The model focuses on comparing both source and target text in order to acquire some mismatches and errors before concluding the statement of quality. In the end, the researcher got the conclusion that the interpersonal function is slightly changed while the ideational function remains the same. Moreover, the researcher also concluded that this model is more appropriate to be used in assessing the translation quality of explicit texts such as texts with informative and operative purposes. Keywords: translation quality assessment, speech, juliane house, mismatches, errors

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the lexical richness that the students of English Language and Culture Department have by deeply analyzing their undergraduate theses as the data. The researcher limited the data into undergraduate theses produced by students of batch 2010/2011 of English Language and Culture Department. The researcher used computer software called AntWordProfiler, a kind of software for profiling texts created by Laurence Anthony. The data were processed using the said software in order to produce the type and the token of the text. Afterwards, the researcher used type-token ratio (TTR) as the method in measuring the lexical richness as a part of data analysis. The closer the TTR score to 1, the higher the lexical richness is. However, the result shows that the students’ lexical richness is quite low since none of the students achieved even 0.5.Keywords:  lexical richness, type-token ratio (TTR), undergraduate theses

Abstract

In any practical field, tensions always exist between the group that views theoretical study as necessary and those who consider it pointless: likewise in the case of translation. Translation often places most of its emphasis on its practical aspects. The theoretical aspect of translation is often marginalized in professional settings. Nevertheless, in the context of translator training, translation theory is as an essential area, which needs to be studied and explored. This study investigated the views of 5th- and 7th-semester students of English Department at a private undergraduate educational institution in Jakarta, Indonesia, on translation theory. The class Theory of Translation is the only official locus for instruction in theories of translation at the target institution. The results of this study may provide several benefits, including the aiding the creation of syllabuses for and teaching translation theory. The author used a questionnaire to acquire the data needed to address the research questions. The results of this research revealed that most students in the 5th and 7th semester of English study in Jakarta, Indonesia, have a positive perception of translation theory, believing that it is essential for translation practice. Moreover, they also considered that translation theory could provide solutions for issues in the practice of translation.

Abstract

The difference between a common translation and user interface localization for a technology product has raised big questions regarding the implementation of its translation strategy. This research attempts to answer this inquiry by analyzing the tendency of translation strategies used in the localization process for social media Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), and Youtube from English to Indonesian. The method used in this translation is qualitative descriptive, focusing on the text elements in the user interfaces from all three social media. The data were collected through a direct exploration of all three social media user interfaces in both English and Indonesian versions. The data from this research are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences presented in each user interface. From the data analysis, it is concluded that the most dominant translation procedure in the localization process of all three social media is naturalization. Meanwhile, the method and ideology applied are semantic translation and foreignization. This finding provides insight into the importance of translation strategies in localization for social media applications and how this process affects Indonesian users' experience. The results of this research also provide that every localization process does not have to be dominated by a domestic translation strategy as the name suggests. In fact, most technology product localization is translated with a foreignization approach to maintain consistency across platforms.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the reliability of peer assessment as a form of alternative assessment and as a part of student-centered learning process. The data was taken from one of the ‘Writing 3’ classes in English Language and Culture Department, which consist of fifteen students. The students were taught how they should conduct peer assessment, what rules they should follow, and how they should utilize the provided scoring rubric before they assessed their peers’ writing assignments. The writer, as the lecturer of the class, also conducted her own assessment using the same scoring rubric. The results of peer and teacher/lecturer assessment were compared and calculated using SPSS in order to find out whether the results of peer assessment have significant difference with the results of teacher/lecturer assessment. The result shows that there is no significant differences between the results of teacher assessment and peer assessment. This means that peer assessment could be implemented as a form of alternative assessment in writing classes.

Abstract

Abstract

The Torajan language is the heritage language of the Torajan people, which reflects the local wisdom and identity of the people. Yet, with the popularity of Indonesian and English as the lingua franca, there is a concern for the domain, status, and vitality of the Torajan language within the society. Therefore, this study aims to study the visibility of the language. This study offers a novel approach by looking at the use of the Torajan language in the linguistic landscape in two regencies, Tana Toraja and Toraja Utara, to determine its position in the community. The research utilized a case study design, and the source of data is linguistic landscapes found along Jalan Poros RantepaoMakale which connects the two regencies. The images of linguistic landscapes were collected by viewing the Google Street View facility provided by Google Maps, and the languages in those linguistic landscapes were noted. The findings show that Indonesian and English dominate the linguistic landscape in Tana Toraja and Toraja Utara, and the Torajan language is minimally represented in the public space of these two regencies. The lack of visibility of the language in the public space might be caused by the restricted use of the language for familial talks at home and oral indigenous rituals. However, the Torajan language needs to be used more frequently in public spaces since it could promote a positive attitude of the people, which would in turn solidify the position of the language in the society.
